Brett Favre

After an appearance on the David Letterman show where Brett Favre appeared to be waivering on his decision to retire, the Green Bay Packers sent a message regarding their feelings by placing the future Hall of Famer on the reserve/retired list.

Favre no longer holds a spot on the Green Bay Packers' roster and his $11.4 million salary cap charge is off the team's books. It was mostly a matter of procedure and the Packers could have done it as soon as Favre announced his decision to retire March 4. Up until now, the Packers haven't needed Favre's roster spot or his salary cap money (they were roughly $21 million beneath it), but with rosters currently limited to 80 players with none of the previous exemptions from NFL Europa, the club needs some roster space.

The NFL does not require a letter for a player to be placed in a reserve/retired status. The only reason for Favre to sign his retirement papers is so that he can receive his severance pay from the NFL. He can wait years to file them. Still, there could be something symbolic to Favre's decision not to file them. In a series of interviews this week to promote a popular video game, Favre continues to question whether he made the right decision.

I hope Brett comes back as a Bear. That will show all Packer fans how he really feels about them.

i have enjoyed watching farve through his career i hated to see him retire but it was the right way to go out he has won super bowls and has set a lot of records and i think that he should not return and just enjoy his life outside football and becomea anaylist for espn or cbs.

    We will love Brett
no matter where he plays, should he choose to play...
no matter where he retires, should he choose to file those papers...
No matter if he is 87 or 22.
(Sheesh people, last time I checked this is still America).
That all said, IF he DOES return, may God Bless him best if he chooses to return to Green Bay.

I agree with # 9. The media will sometimes write anything to just try and stir people up.

Packer fans should be forever grateful & indebted to Mr. Farve. Prior to him all they had to talk about was the glory days of yesteryear & Lombardi. Now that Farve's retired, they must know deep down that there is no hope for another 30 years like their traditions & history has been. So the only hope for them is to cling to the dream of #4 un-retiring.

The Media in MOST cases are like lawyers, they don't have a clue and will say whatever to get someone to listen to them. Most of both sides should be ran out of town.

People...... Let the man have his peace. For the love of God; he knew and played this game for the better part of his life and just because he wears a lot of emotion on his sleeve don't mean SQUAT. Of COURSE he will question things until it settles. He is retired - leave him to his and his family's peace already.

theres no way there gonna do anything now to tell him they dont want him back. Rodgers could break his leg in the first game of the season, and pull a David Pollack. I don't think he will, but the Packers shouldn't kill their relationship with Favre when they don't know if they'll need him again or not.

I believe Favre still has the ability to compete and the desire to play......I thought that when he announced his retirement. I think players tarnish their legacies when they retire then unretire or can't decide.....oh what should I do????
I can't help but think the Packers were sending Brett a message when they announced the retirement of his jersey shortly after he proposed the idea that he would play if Rodgers were injured. If Brett plays again it will not be in a Packer jersey.
I would hate to see Brett stay retired but time marches on and players cannot play forever. He will eternally be one of football's great quarterbacks and it is just a matter of time before he and his career accomplishments will enter the Hall of Fame. I just don't want to see Brett end up like so many players before him broken and pathetic looking on the field of play.

I AM A Bear fan. I live in Wisconsin. It was Packer fans that called for him to retire for years, until he had a good year last year. Then they complain when he hangs them up. If Brett comes back, I doubt the Pack will take him back. Anybody ever hear of Joe Montana?

Let this Brett thing die. A lot of Q.B.'s have retired that were great. Montana, Stabach, Tarkenton, Starr, Jonny U. Many more. All good things come to an end. No ones fans like to see these greats leave the game, But there is life for them besides football.

Hey number 8.....In what way has Ted Thompson screwed up on the drafts? He makes value picks, most of whom have become starters. He got the whole Mike Sherman debacle pretty much cleared up in no time. Enough salary cap room to pay our own players that have proven themselves in our system instead of paying some worthless has-been like Joe Johnson. His team went from 4-12 to 13-3 in 2 seasons and had Brett Favre not resorted to his old self for one split second, they would have been in the super bowl.
Again, just wondering how Ted screwed-up!!!!

Favre was the best. I dont care what you say. No one can ever replace Favre and his spot on the Packers. He probably wont comeback as Pete has stated. And I hope he doesnt. He has gotten old, to old to continue. He had a great season. Played great his career. And I think he should leave it at that. Why push on and possibly hurt yourself, while you can retire now and reap the rewards. Favre is one of the best all-time players in NFL. Hands Down.

This article is stupid. Why would the packers not cut him from the roster...leaving room for another talent. This move by the Pack effects roster number and CAP money. Brett Favre is exercising his right to retire and he always will be a Green Bay Packer. I doubt he will pull a Reggie White and come out of retirement playing for another team. Favre loved playing for the Packers (who still would have rights over him if he un-retired) and the Packers loved having Brett Favre. So to suggest the Packers are disrespecting Brett is ludicrist. His Jersey is being retired so quick because there is no doubt he was the Greatest Packer QB ever and it is done out of respect, not slamming the door.
