It was the one that got away that helped shape the Chicago Bears' offseason plan that wrapped up Sunday with the signing of Devin Hester. Now the question is how much Hester will be able to fill the void created by the loss of wide receiver Bernard Berrian.

The Bears went into free agency with more than $20 million in salary-cap space and said it was earmarked for their own. Despite earnest efforts, Berrian left to NFC North rival Minnesota, giving the Vikings a legitimate deep threat to help loosen up defenses intent on stopping running back Adrian Peterson. The Bears were offering Berrian less than $30 million on a five-year deal. The Vikings wowed him with a $42 million, six-year offer, and the loss shaped the ensuing months for the Bears, who acted quickly to re-sign Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs. Could general manager Jerry Angelo have spent $185.39 million on 10 Bears and still added Berrian to the mix?

''It would have been Berrian or Briggs,'' Angelo said. ''We made a decision. We tried to do Bernard; didn't work. It's not to say we couldn't have done Lance, but it made it easier.''

One of the many questions for the offense this summer is how it will replace Berrian. Marty Booker figures to be an able replacement for Muhsin Muhammad as a possession target and is far less likely to be discovered criticizing his quarterbacks. Finding a way to recreate Berrian's 71 receptions for 951 yards and five touchdowns is another thing, and in giving Hester a $40 million, four-year extension, the Bears are saying they believe he can play a major role there.

Doesn't matter who plays wide receiver if we don't have a QB who can consistantly get the ball to them.

Good choice. berrian is not that good. drops too many balls. Chicago has always been a defensive team,

It seems like the first time I have said this, but ... that's definitely a good choice. I liked Berrrian, but he has butterfingers too often. Now that's the Vikings' problem.

Berrian or Briggs.......hmm..I can't believe the Bears even considered one or the other! Briggs is much better, much more consistant, and will help the team more than Berrian ever will. Angelo needs to go. His comments only prove he doesn't know what he's doing. Luckily he made the right choice.

Chicago is going to have one of the worst defenses in the NFL. They will put up a lot of stats, but they will let up a huge amount of yardage and points. They will be on the field for 40 minutes a game. That offense wont keep the D off the field for more than 5 minutes at a time.

Let's stick it to Jerry and sign Terry Glenn. If he passes a physical he can help the reveiving corps.

Briggs is the right choice ,,,,granted Berrian would of been good to have but not for that money. He did make some great catchs but he also dropped some that caused him to be benched acouple of times to. Lets see what Vik's do with him.

The Vikings are going to be extremely happy that the Bears let Berrian get away
    UNTIL.....
About 4 quarters into the season when they realize he has only slightly-above-average talent and is prone to the droppies.
The Vikings are becoming the new Redskins.

I'd take Terry Glenn if he is available! Marty Booker and Greg Olson might make good targets for Kyle Orton, but I don't see him using the deep ball much. Rex could probably make some use out of Hester. I just hope that Hester doesn't get hurt playing offense.

The bears need to sure who starts at QB and keep the new vamped o-line healthy and together. That was a problem for us last year via run or pass. Granted we don't have a great recieving core but if we can run the ball consistently we'll be fine with the guys we have at reciever and tight-end(s)

berrian is just a really good #2 wideout. NO WAY was he worth what the Vikes threw at him. if you don't believe me...go watch the interceptions that were thrown his way. dude didn't even fight for the ball half the time. the other half he lollygagged and he gave up(stopped running). while he had big play ability(mostly because it was a contract year last year)...there's no way they should or could have signed him. getting Olsen and Hess in the game will offset the loss and Booker should be better at ya know...actually CATCHING the ball. something Moose and BB couldn't do last year

yeah, I think that people will be pleasently surprised with the bears this year. Our offense while not stellar, will probably be mid pack in rankings, and our defense is going to rebound this year to be awesome. Hopefully the injury bug will stear clear for the most part, and we can bet back to our winning ways. Grossman will start, throw 24 td's, 14 picks, and have 4 fumbles. Hester will have 52 catches for 7 tds, and booker will add 82 catches for 6 td's Olson is going to be the surprise this year though. he will catch 78 for 8 tds. Our running game will look good with the one two punch of forte and jones, and we will win the NFC north again.

21 you are on drugs. grossman is more likely to go 14 and 24. And your offense will be in the bottom 5, if not last. The bears have no key players in any offensive positions, and they are reaching with hester at WR. Grossman will be pulled by week 5.

Nice post Darryl. Well said. Someone so articulate shouldn't be wasting their time on yahoo. Anyways i know more about football than you could even dream of. What comment in my post in inaccurate? The Bears will probably go 5 and 11 this year, Grossman is awful, you have no receivers and an unproven running back. You defense is good, but they will be on the field for 40 minutes a game, since the offense will not be able to put together many long drives. If you believe any of this to be untrue, then it is you who knows little about football.

For all you grossman haters...try firing the blame of the lack of running game that had the bears throwing most of the time. Benson was a huge bust (never made 1000 yds in 3 seasons) and our D let us down big time with all the 3rd down conversions they allowed.
As far as Berrian goes...lets see how well he does with T.Jackson throwing him wobbly passes into coverage or no where near him at all. All Jackson has is some speed, he cant read the D or be accurate enough to put the ball in play.
But keep hating on the Bears, or Cowboys, or Patriots or whoever you people like to hate on. All teams are even at this point so its gonna be an interesting season.
