The San Francisco 49ers have asked quarterback Alex Smith to restructure his contract according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Presently, Smith's contract counts $12.3 million against the salary cap. The team would like to pay Smith a base salary of $9.625 million this season. According to The Chronicle, if a deal is reached, Smith will remain a 49er and at least in theory have a chance of earning the starting job in another training camp duel with Shaun Hill.

If the 49ers are unsuccessful in redoing Smith's contract, he will probably be waived.
