LT climbs charts, Bolts beat Eagles 31-23

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Motivation came in different forms for the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, from Denver’s loss to the little surprise LaDainian Tomlinson’s(notes) wife left in his locker.

Tomlinson’s career certainly isn’t finished and neither is the AFC West race.

Tomlinson ran for a season-high 96 yards and scored twice to continue his climb up the career rushing and scoring lists, and the Chargers beat the Philadelphia Eagles 31-23 to pull into a tie atop the AFC West with the slumping Broncos.

Asked if something happened that gave him motivation, L.T. got a little emotional.

“I don’t know if I want to talk about it,” he said. “My wife is pregnant. I found out before the game. She left me a gift in my locker. It said, ‘Open immediately.’ I thought it was a necklace. It was a pregnancy test.”

The child will be the couple’s first. LaTorsha Tomlinson suffered a miscarriage in 2005.

Fired up about fatherhood, Tomlinson passed Thurman Thomas and Franco Harris and moved into 12th place all-time with 12,145 yards. His two touchdowns gave him 146 and moved him past Marcus Allen and into third place on the all-time list.

“It’s kind of surreal,” Tomlinson said of his latest accomplishment, noting that he has a ball autographed by Harris in his trophy case. “I grew up watching all those guys. It’s mind-boggling that I am third all-time.”

It appeared for a while in the offseason that L.T. would be a salary-cap casualty, but the sides finally agreed to a reworked contract. He turned 30 in June, then sprained his right ankle in a season-opening win at Oakland. He missed the next two games, the first time in his brilliant career that he missed regular-season games due to injury.

“I’m still effective,” he said. “That’s all that counts. Still finding ways to help this team win.”

The score of the Broncos’ 27-17 loss at Washington—Denver’s third straight — was announced moments before kickoff in San Diego. The Chargers then went out and won their fourth straight.

The Chargers and Broncos, both 6-3, play next Sunday in Denver. Four weeks ago, the Chargers appeared dead in the water, 3 1/2 games back after losing 34-23 to the then-undefeated Broncos.

“We didn’t know it would happen this fast,” quarterback Philip Rivers(notes) said. “We believed we could get ourselves back in it.”

Eagles running back Brian Westbrook(notes) was knocked out with another concussion. He had missed the previous two games after a concussion during a win against Washington on Oct. 26.

“In these types of situations, football is secondary,” coach Andy Reid said. “You’ve got to look at this kid and for his future, and make sure everything’s OK for him before he gets back out there.”

Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb(notes) threw for a season-high 450 yards, completing 35 of 55, and two late touchdowns. He was intercepted in the end zone by Antonio Cromartie(notes) on the game’s last play.

The Eagles (5-4) made it inside the Chargers’ 10-yard line three times only to have to settle for field goals by David Akers(notes).

“When you have those opportunities to score we have to pound it in there,” McNabb said. “We definitely tried, but credit to them, but they stopped us, obviously, from running the ball into the end zone.”

The last time the Chargers played the Eagles, on Oct. 23, 2005, Tomlinson was held to 7 yards on 17 carries, his career low for a regular-season game.

His previous season-high was 71 yards in a win at Kansas City three weeks ago.

Tomlinson scored on a 3-yard run to give the Chargers a 14-0 lead four minutes into the second quarter. Midway through the third quarter he chugged 20 yards through the right side of the Eagles’ defense to make it 21-6.

Rivers threw touchdown passes of 20 yards to wide-open fullback Mike Tolbert(notes) in the first quarter and 20 yards to Legedu Naanee(notes) in the third quarter. Rivers was 20 of 25 for 231 yards and no interceptions, with a rating of 131.8.

Naanee was flagged for excessive celebration for kneeling in front of a Chargers cheerleader and handing her the ball. The Chargers had to kick off from their 15. Naanee said it was spontaneous.

The Eagles were stuffed their first three times inside the San Diego 10, including when they had the ball first-and-goal from the 1 after Quentin Jammer’s(notes) pass interference penalty in the end zone in the second quarter. They had to settle for field goals of 18, 25 and 25 yards.

McNabb threw a 5-yard pass to Jeremy Maclin(notes) early in the fourth quarter and 6 yards to tight end Brent Celek(notes) with 7:12 left to pull the Eagles to 28-23.

NOTES: McNabb tied his franchise record with 35 completions. His 450 yards are second in franchise history behind of record of 464. … Eagles WR Jason Avant(notes) had eight catches for 156 yards. … Philly CB Sheldon Brown(notes) hurt a hamstring … Chargers RT Jeromey Clary(notes) hurt an ankle.

Here is some more food for thought for ALL of the McNabb BASHERS:

It seems like Billick took heat for his harsh assessment of Coach Reid's game planning, play calling, and overall performance as Head Coach; but, Billick's not the only one who sees what's going on. The San Diego announcers were elated that the Eagles weren't running the ball, because the Chargers' run defense is so poor, and; the national color guy was bashing the red zone play calling as vanilla and predictable, unlikely to work against any NFL defense. Later, the San Diego guys delightedly talked about how defenses love to tee it up when they know for sure the other team is passing, and the national color guy bent over backwards to note Reid's success so that he didn't come across as disrespectful while he eviscerated the Eagles' play-calling. Just a couple weeks ago, Merril Hoge on ESPN laughed out loud at the Eagles' offense as the easiest in the league to game plan against because you know what they are going to do every play. And last season, defensive backs from both Cincinnati and Washington were quoted after playing the Eagles saying that they basically knew what plays were coming. So keep talking about McNabb if you must. Sure, he has weaknesses. (Though his inaccuracy is overstated: Just one more completion per game in his career and McNabb's completion rate nears Joe Montana's.) But all the ink spilled and invectives spewed about McNabb simply misses the big story: Our play-calling is SO skewed that opponents are laughing at us! Some QB's could fare better, but no QB can succeed when the defense knows what's coming almost every single play!

    @ Scottsinsd1...
Haha....I am a Pats fan...not an Eagles fan in the least. In fact I think the NFC is a joke. I was just saying that I think LT is past his prime. A trade for a complement WR for Jackson and other youth would be great while LT still has some value...

that's not even close to right...as far as LT being past his prime, you're right...he's older, true...he also doesn't have lorenzo neal to block for him anymore, although tolbert is coming on nicely...the o-line was screwed for the first half of the season and hardwick still isn't back...he was injured in week one and sat a few weeks...and for a few games the team wasn't in a postion to use the run very often...watch him the last few weeks...his cuts are there, the timing, burst, vision...what's lacking is norv's willingness to be less predictable in the running game, his insistence on using hester over tolbert in running plays, and the o-line not opening holes...i think he benefits from being in a good rotation, but he's still a feature back...he's got another solid 3 yrs after this one and i think he'll be a top ten rusher in one of those years at least...the wideout situation is actually where i had the most disagreement...jackson already has complimentary receivers...antonio gates, malcom floyd, legedu naanee, kassim osgood, LT, sproles...i think, especially since they haven't gotten michael bennett going at all, that they need to address the running back situation for next year, possibly through the draft...that would be a win/win situation, the younger guy has time to learn and prosper splitting reps, and you don't break the bank on a trade or free agent...they also need to address the o-line, d-line, and safety positions one way or another...still, they're just getting healthy, a lot of young guys are earning their stripes right now, and this team is good enough to take down anyone in the league when they're hot, and right now they're just getting started

Post#132, your confusing me a little bit here. Your rattling about how great San Diego is but then said something about the future home in Las Vegas. Who's future home? If its the Chargers that would be interesting cause Las Vegas might be one of the scumiest places in the United States. I would say that the gangs here in Vegas are the second coming of Raider Nation. Im just intrigued actually have visited San Diego and actually thinking it was a nice city. You second option might be a little far-fetched!

Hey Jazzinefx, it could be worse. You could have Norv Turner who runs a 5'6" 180 lb punt returner up the middle on 3rd & goal.......over & over.....and it NEVER works......but he KEEPS doing it......even if it pisses off LT & every fan in the stands. Frustrating!

Black is a COLOR, NOT A RACE!! You should learn the difference!!! Andy Reid DESIGNS the plays, did you not notice that peice of plastic that Reid covers his face with? Those are plays that he "designs" for his opponent, in the week of practice, and game-planning, leading up to the game. Reid hasn't deviated from those "scripted" plays in 10 seasons!! Any NFL club can just about tell what Reid will run next!! We in Philadelphia, "knows" Reid's plays, and we're TIRED of them!! Reid's offense is geared for the quick strike, put up as many points as fast as you can!! Now, when he plays lesser defenses, he puts up big numbers, and Donovan "shines" When defenses come ready to play, is when Reid stinks, and Donovan "looks" bad!! Donovan can hardly be called a loser, he is a top five NFL quarterback, by the numbers!!! With your flawed opinion, we should call Dan Marino a "loser" also, huh?

Andy Reid is the architect of this "version" of the West Coast Offense, and his fingers is all over the offense, these are his "guys", he's drafted or signed via free-agency, EVERYONE OF THEM!!! Reid's offense hasn't changed in 10 seasons, and the NFL's defenses have caught up to it. He's got a bunch of young, unproven players on offense. And again, I ask you: If Reid is so great as a coach, why hasn't he sent an Eagles wide-out to the ALL-PRO GAME???

I don't know what you watch, in a football game, but; when an offense is UNABLE to get a measly yard for a first down, or a touchdown, that doesn't bode well for a Head Coach, or his offensive co-ordinator, or his quarterbacks coach, or his running backs coach, or his offensive line coach!!! THERE IS NO PASSING PLAY DESIGNED TO GET ONE YARD!!!

I explained why the Eagles can't get the yardage they need in the red-zone: It is because the Eagles are not a traditional rushing club, and their O-LINE is built to pass block, not; to rush block!!! There is a big DIFFERENCE in the two styles of O-LINE blocking!!! Reid has OUTLIVED his usefulness in Philadelphia, EVERY EAGLES FAN KNOWS IT, and only the MOST CLUELESS will blame McNabb, for these losses.

Reid is a poor MOTIVATOR, and DISCPLINARIAN, these are TWO things, that a Head Coach MUST HAVE!! Reid's way, is to let the players work out their problems, which works sometimes. When you've got play problems, and personell mismatches, THAT IS THE Head Coache's PROBLEM to WORK OUT!!!

Simply put, Reid has to go!! We can win with the talent that is in Philadelphia, we can't win the must have games with this Head Coach ANYMORE!!! We need a Football Coach, who is grounded in Football plays!! We need to rush the football a good 25 times a game!! Who throws the football 55 times to unproven receivers? The proof is that Avant, who is a BACK-UP receiver, had a CAREER DAY!! It is a stretch to believe that Avant would have that kind of game again!!

Those of us true green Eagles fans have seen it all before. All Coaches burn out eventually!! We've seen Vermeil burn-out, we've seen Buddy-Ryan burn out, and we're seeing Reid burn-out!! Reid has NO ANSWERS!!! The best Head Coaches in the history of the NFL, have burned-out!!! Reid has to go, before this club is completely ruined!!

A lot of talk about needing touchdowns instead of field goals and blaming McNabb, or Reid, but if you watched or listened to the game, Chargers defense played a really good game and made it tuff of their offense especially in the redzone. Reid could have been more of a risk taker down there too, but it definately wasn't McNabb or Reid's entire fault, Charger's defense showed up early and Chargers got a big lead. If the defense continues to get healthy and more experience for the youngsters, Denver might be out of a playoff spot.

McNabb is 131/218 1,685 yards 60.1% completion 12 touchdowns, 4 interceptions and a rating of 95.1 . I hardly think that counts for getting the receivers the ball "half the time". He's doing his job.

I just can't understand how a team falls apart when they lose one of their running backs such as "Westbrook". The Eagles have other young talent on the team that need to make use of when someone is down. I'm tired of seeing "McCry Baby" running around frustrated at the offense when he can't even get his receivers the ball half the time.

Andy Reid, needs to be the coach and not let McCry Baby make all the decisions. McCry Baby needs to step up as the leader instead of bringing everyone down when Westbrook gets hurt.

    Andy,
when he starts crying, bench him and let Vick/Kolb be more involved in the offense.

It is totally frustrating to see the Eagles lose a game like this. They need to figure out how to capitalize on those red zone visits.

Also, some of you may disagree, but it is time to drop Westbrook. He has become too much of a liability to the team. He's injury prone and is not a consistent runner. When he first came into the league, he was great with the pass and run because no one was able to figure him out. He was a secret weapon. However, those times have passed. He is no longer the secret weapon he once was. The Eagles need to invest in a power back, someone who can gain yardage and bowl over people. I love Westbrook, but he needs to go.

Also, those who think McNabb is the problem don't know football. He's easily the 4th or 5th best QB in the league behind Peyton Manning, Brady, or Favre. Eagles need a run game and less injury to the defense.

If Andy Reid could get the ball in from the 9 he would be one of the greatest coaches in the last 50 years, but he can't and and won't so his system is flawd and that's why he will never be a great coach.

    It's a catch 22.

Is the team better with Andy then before him.

    Heck yes!

But by the same token will you ever win the big one with him.

    No!

He refuses to run the ball which is fine but at some time like in the 9 yard line you have to be able to get the ball into the endzone.

And this is simply something he has struggled with since he's been here.

Just call me a frustrated Eagles Fan!

    @ tomahawk...

I agree that FG's are okay if you win. This morning the standings only show another win for both Tennessee and Indy.

The Eagles have to get their act together to get into the post-season, and yes time is slipping away,

Their receivers as a unit though look like one of the youngest groups in the league, and the game changes when you get to the other teams 32 yard line. To get to the point season, they have to learn how to play that part of the game a LITTLE better. Then it becomes TD's instead of field goals.

I hope they do it because they can play an exciting brand of football.
