Carter fills in for Clark, sparks Pittsburgh

DENVER (AP)—Safety Ryan Clark(notes) got his wish: replacement Tyrone Carter(notes) took one to the house and Clark got to fly home with his teammates this time.

Carter started in place of Clark as a precaution Monday night and made the big play that sparked the Steelers to their fifth straight win, taking the first of his two interceptions 48 yards for a touchdown in Pittsburgh’s 28-10 win over the Denver Broncos.

Clark nearly died following a game in Denver two years ago because of a rare blood disorder that is aggravated by playing in high altitude, so Steelers coach Mike Tomlin decided to hold him out of the game.

He said he didn’t want to risk Clark’s health or burden his teammates and family members with worry.

“Ryan likes to play. He’s probably hacked off at me that I didn’t play him,” Tomlin said. “But he will get over it.”

He already is, apparently.

“My goal for this trip was to go back with the team on the plane,” Clark said. “Last time I came out, I didn’t make it back with them.”

Clark was hospitalized in Denver in October 2007 when complications from sickle-cell trait prevented oxygen from flowing into his spleen. He later needed operations to remove his spleen and gall bladder, and he lost more than 30 pounds before he finally began feeling better more than two months later.

He missed the second half of that season, but recovered and resumed his career last season, when the Steelers won the Super Bowl.

Carter capped his night with his second interception with 15 seconds left, and Clark, dressed in charcoal sweats and a smile on the sideline, jumped up and down in celebration, then clicked the heels of his tennis shoes as he exited the field.

“I was excited for him,” Clark said. “It was a big win. He did an awesome job. His first interception really put us in the game.”

“I might be like Wally Pipp,” he added with a chuckle. “I’d better get back fast.”

Hines Ward(notes) caught two short touchdown passes from Ben Roethlisberger(notes), including one in which he hauled in a pass in the flat and hurdled cornerback Champ Bailey(notes) on his way into the end zone, a final indignity for Denver that capped the scoring with 1:22 remaining and emptied the stadium.

Rashard Mendenhall(notes) rumbled over the Broncos for 155 yards on 22 carries as the Steelers (6-2) handed Denver its second straight loss after the Broncos opened the season 6-0 under rookie coach Josh McDaniels.

Carter’s first interception return gave Pittsburgh a 7-3 halftime lead even though the Steelers had generated just three first downs and were outgained 183-54 in the first half.

An ecstatic Clark was among the first players to swarm Carter, the first defender to pick off a Kyle Orton(notes) pass all season. His only interception before throwing three Monday night was a Hail Mary that Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss(notes) pulled down in a game last month.

“I’ll tell you, Ryan is like a brother to me. We’ve been in this thing together for a long time,” Carter said. “The bond is so tight between all of us. But to know that he can’t play today and knowing that he wanted to be out there, I just wanted to make sure that I went out there and played for him, and let him know I’m there for him, that we were still going to be all right.”

With the Steelers clinging to a 14-10 lead in the fourth quarter, safety Troy Polamalu(notes) snared another Orton pass, this one at the Broncos 25-yard line, leading to Roethlisberger’s 25-yard TD toss to rookie Mike Wallace(notes).

Denver scored on its opening drive for the first time this season. But the Broncos had to settle for Matt Prater’s(notes) 40-yard field goal after cornerback William Gay(notes) broke up a pass at the 10 to Eddie Royal(notes), who had three receptions for 47 yards on the 56-yard drive.

The Broncos’ defense retaliated for Carter’s pick-six on the opening drive of the second half when Kenny Peterson(notes) swooped in and punctuated his first sack of the season by punching the ball out of Roethlisberger’s hands. Rookie linebacker Robert Ayers(notes) scooped it up and rumbled 54 yards for a touchdown that gave Denver a 10-7 lead.

It didn’t last long.

Roethlisberger, who was 21 for 29 for 233 yards, drove the Steelers 80 yards in four plays, hitting Ward with a 3-yard strike over the outstretched right arm of linebacker D.J. Williams(notes) to put Pittsburgh ahead for good, 14-10.

Roethlisberger drove the Steelers to the Denver 15 on the Steelers’ next possession, but he threw behind Ward in the end zone and cornerback Andre’ Goodman(notes) picked it off—Big Ben’s first red-zone interception since 2007.

The Steelers dominated the second half by going no-huddle with three-wide receiver sets, which kept Elvis Dumervil(notes), the NFL co-leader with 10 1/2 sacks, on the sideline much of the time.

“We didn’t stop anybody once they started going no-huddle,” McDaniels said.

Clark was one of three Steelers defensive starters sitting out, joining defensive end Travis Kirschke(notes) (calf) and linebacker Lawrence Timmons(notes) (ankle). It hardly mattered as Denver managed just 59 yards on six second-half drives.

As Denver self-destructed in the second half for the second straight week, Invesco Field became a sea of yellow Terrible Towels and thousands of empty blue seats, orange giveaway pom-pons littering the aisles.

^NOTES: Orton was 7 for 17 for 58 yards after halftime after going 16 for 21 for 163 yards in the first half. … 35-year-old CB Ty Law(notes) made his debut for Denver two days after signing with the Broncos.

One of the original teams from the NFLs inception. The first with 4 rings now has 6. Has never lost it's fan base. Never any front or back office scandals, that we hear about anyway, and in todays age thats saying something.Only the third coach the teams ever had. ALL YOU HATERS ARGUE WITH THAT. And at the very least we will make the second round of the playoffs, but as a true Steeler fan, I say we win it all this year. Who can stop us?

im not saying get rid of him but i still believe you put the best from who you have in the game and im not sure parker is gonna be that choice whether its starting (which he obviously wont) or just to mix it up. they got a working system i just dont want to see them tamper with it too much. but Tomlin and friends will decide what needs to be done and i trust theyll do the right thing without a doubt.

lets just hope our D gives them a bunch of chances to figure it out.

    jrd--

The Steelers are not the Browns. They do not kick players to the curb who have perfromed well in the past. Even Parker does not know what he is capable of doing right now.

I am just looking at the games in the last couple weeks of December, and you know that last game against the Ravens will be brutal. The Steelers need everybody playing. Maybe then the Steelers can back-to-back SuperBowls.

    It is a thought!

Unsure of what I think of Parker's return. Mendenhall has been a beast as of late. I like him up the middle for the tough yards. But can he take one to the house the way fast willie used to? And can Parker still perform at the same level after sitting out with injuries? RB's fade fast in this league.
All I know is that I can't wait for this week's game. Wish it was sunday.
Steelers do turn it up a notch for big games.
My prediction - Steelers win big

    GO BLACK & GOLD!!!

Parker is going to be rusty, but he needs to work on timing and just running with the ball. Two or three times in every second or third series keeps the defence off balance. Parker also needs to work on his pass blocking because it is different in practice than in a game.

Mendenhall should be doing most of the carries until Parker shows that he can get the job done as he has in the past. Maybe Mendenhall learns a little about protecting the ball. Moore is a good third down back, but offences need some new wrinkles once in a while.

Later in the year, the ground gets harder. And sometimes you need to replace for a series or two a key player. It is always good if they are ready to go!

thanks i wasnt too worried about it, if thats the best hes got then thats pretty pathetic and youre right i do feel bad for him.

also im not a big fan of parker or at least using him up the middle as much as they did. i feel moore is a fine 3rd down guy and mendenhall can get it done easily if he can just hold onto the ball which i know is a huge issue.

ill also agree that im glad to see cincy doing something this year. Ocho looks like he's calmed down a bit and matured to the point where he can have fun and still be one of the better receivers. Palmers always had a huge arm and benson just ties it all together. Granted the offense let up in the second half of the baltimore game but the D did what they had to to win it and thats all you need sometimes. Im confident the steelers can get them to force the pass by shutting benson down and letting troy make up some ground in the int race that he missed earlier. but with all the weapons each team has on offense im giving the edge to pitts D, no bold statement there.

    @ Steelx6...

It is good when a division is competitive. You get better prepared for the post-season because you play high calibre teams. In theory, every team tries to improve each year.

The Steelers lost some quality people, and right out of the gate, they were not sure. Wallace is showing himself to be more than just a fill-in replacement for Washington. Carter/Clarke switch for the Denver game was a classy move by a first rate organization, and all they will get out of it is a better nickle or dime package.

    Go Steelers!

    Steeler fans-
I like talking football too but like calling out the mental midgets like Justina.
Anyway, this is the best division in football. It is a shame the Browns can't be semi competitive and make it unanimous. Look what the Ravens did to Denver and then tell me that are third place team is not better than any other division's 2nd place team or in some cases better than their division leader. This Cincy game will end up with a convincing win for the Steelers 28-14.

    Justina-

It's best to just ignore comments from guys looking for attention with pathetic insults while hiding behind their computers. Why give them the satisfaction of a reply if they don't have any positive dialogue? Every true fan is going to support their team. Bashing others for support of a different team is a child's game.
On to football. I'm actually glad that Cincy is competitive this year. The division was getting a little boring with the same two teams being on top every year. This week's game for first place (instead of just another Steelers spanking the Bengals) has the feel of a playoff game. Makes for much more interesting football, don't you think?
Here we go Steelers, here we go!

Ryan is back this week. The nickle and dime defences will be better. Parker comes back this week, and he runs different than Mendenhall. The ground attack will be harder to defend, and Ben will be Ben.

All they have to do now is say hi to Palmer and company -- Steeler style.
