Saints go to 8-0 with 30-20 win over Panthers

NEW ORLEANS (AP)—Drew Brees(notes) and the Saints’ prolific offense never had to play from behind in their first five games.

Mastering the comeback in their last three has gotten New Orleans off to its best start in the franchise’s 43-year history.

New Orleans moved to 8-0 on Sunday when Brees overcame two early turnovers to pass for 330 yards and a touchdown in a 30-20 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

“That’s great. I mean, 1967 until now and we’re the only (Saints) team to have done that,” Brees said. “That’s really special. I feel like we’ve got a special group of guys, a special team, and certainly we’re not satisfied with just being 8-0. We have what it takes to just continue to win.”

Starting with a favorable schedule during the next two weeks. The Saints play at St. Louis and Tampa Bay, who are a combined 2-14 this season, meaning New Orleans has a realistic chance to be 10-0 when New England—the only team to finish a regular season 16-0—comes to the Louisiana Superdome the Monday night after Thanksgiving.

Before this season, the only 7-0 team New Orleans ever had was in 1991, a squad coached by Jim Mora and known for its defense.

The defense on the 2009 Saints gives up its share of yards, but has continued to make big plays at the right time.

While the Saints did not intercept a pass for the first time all season, their defense forced three turnovers on fumbles. The last produced New Orleans’ seventh defensive touchdown of the season on Anthony Hargrove’s(notes) strip, recovery and 1-yard return late in the fourth quarter.

Hargrove might have been down before advancing the ball, but the play started before the two-minute warning and Carolina had no timeouts, preventing a challenge.

DeAngelo Williams(notes) rushed for 149 yards and two TDs, and Carolina gained 182 yards on the ground. But it was Williams’ fumble at his 1 that led to the clinching TD.

It was Carolina’s (3-5) first lost in Louisiana since 2001 and quarterback Jake Delhomme’s(notes) first loss in the Louisiana Superdome. The Panthers blew a 17-3 lead as the Saints improved to 5-0 at home this season.

“I’m encouraged with the fact that we’ve been able to win a few of these games and we haven’t played our best football,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “I don’t know we’re paying a lot of attention to where this (record) at the halfway point compares to past teams. There hadn’t been a real rich history here in regards to successful football.”

The Saints have never been to a Super Bowl and have only been to the playoffs six times. The way they’re closing out games now, there’s no telling how far they could go. New Orleans is outscoring opponents 91-18 in the fourth quarter.

“The more that you win games like this, the more confidence that you gain, the more that you feel like no matter what situation that you’re in, you’re going to be able to win the game,” Brees said. “No matter what the deficit, no matter how bad things might have gone, you just feel like you’re going to come back and you’re going to do it.”

After failing to score a touchdown in the first half for the first time all season, the Saints needed four plays to produce Pierre Thomas’(notes) 10-yard TD run to cut Carolina’s lead to 17-13 to open the third quarter. Devery Henderson’s(notes) 63-yard gain on a short slant highlighted the drive.

Carolina responded with a 19-play drive but had to settle for John Kasay’s(notes) 25-yard field goal. Delhomme’s third-down pass bounced off Williams’ shoulder pads at the goal line.

“It was very disappointing. We came very close to getting the touchdown with that pass to DeAngelo,” Delhomme said. “That would have been huge, making it 24-13.”

Instead, New Orleans tied it at 20 on Robert Meachem’s(notes) leaping catch and run for a 54-yard score.

On their next possession, the Saints started at their 2 and drove 76 yards in 13 plays to go ahead 23-20 on John Carney’s(notes) 40-yard field goal with 4:36 left.

Will Smith(notes), who had two sacks, stripped Delhomme on fourth down, and Hargrove recovered to end Carolina’s next series. Four plays later, Saints rookie Malcolm Jenkins(notes) dove to stop Thomas Morstead’s(notes) punt from going into the end zone, setting up Hargrove’s second fumble recovery in less than a minute.

Before that stretch, Hargove, suspended all of 2008 for NFL substance abuse violations, hadn’t had a fumble recovery since 2005.

Carolina led 14-0 on Williams’ TD runs of 66 and 7 yards, both of which came before the Saints made a first down.

The second TD came after Brees was sacked and stripped by Tyler Brayton(notes), and Jon Beason(notes) recovered on the Saints 11. The Panthers went up 17-3 on Kasay’s 32-yard field goal, set up by Chris Gamble’s(notes) interception.

NOTES: The Saints failed to score in the first quarter for the first time all season. … Saints S Roman Harper(notes) had a career-high 12 tackles. … Carolina LB Thomas Davis(notes) left the game with a right knee injury. … Saints CB Jabari Greer(notes) went out with a groin pull that Payton said did not appear serious.

#133- The difference between 1st and 2nd half production is adjustments. For so many years we have seen other teams make adjustments at half time and come out and wipe the field up with the Saints. This year it is the Saints making the adjustments at half time. It is a welcome change. They are doing it whether they are ahead or trailing at the half. As to those of you who are already having the Patriots winning the game in three weeks; what makes you so sure. The Saints have posted 303 points to the Patriots 225 of which they got 59 just off the Titans. Of the 8 games played they faced 4 of the same opponents. I realize that the Saints gave up 59 more points but the points scored kind of made up for it. Don't be too shocked if your Patriots go home with their tail between their legs. As for the Saints not going to the Superbowl, that's always possible but I seem to recall that the Steelers played for about 39 years before they got there, and then terry Bradshaw and company won about 4 of the next 5 or 6 bowls. As for S.D. trading Brees, if memory serves me well, They cut him because of his shoulder injury and Rivers prospects. I believe he was a free agent and the Saints and Dolphins are the only ones to have any interest and Saban passed up on him. God blessed the New Orleans that day that Drew became a Saint. They still have some stiff competition left so if they are fortunate enough to go undefeated in the regular season it won't be by luck but simply by skill. Luck will apply if they get (5) of their (6) best starters back from injuries. That will also shore up their run defense.

Greg S, Ultimately your not a very bright person. The Saints have shown this season, that they arent the Saints of old you moron. In the old days, as much as I hate to say it fans. We would blow a good lead & most of the time lose. That isnt the case anymore dirtbag. We got the whole package now. Or havent you been watching any of the games instead of running off at the mouth. WE ARE THE TEAM TO BEAT NOW. A team gets ahead it just makes the BLACK & GOLD play that much better. The Saints are for real and anyone who thinks its a fluke is just plain ignorant. Look at our stats baby. GEAUX SAINTS. WHO DAT?

The last 2 games against Falcons & Panthers were won 3 weeks ago in Miami. That win proved to the Saints that they could overcome adversity if they continue to play for 60 minutes. That said, they should use the next 2 games to figure out and correct a lot of the errors that contributed to their slow starts the last 3 games. Though on any given Sunday anything is possible, the truth is that neither the Rams or Bucs pose the same threats that the Saints have faced their last 3 games. They should get back to pounding Pierre and Bell, and, keep the pressure off of Brees and the passing game. They need to get back to dominating teams from start to finish as they prepare for the home stretch, beginning with Patriots on Monday night. Let's lock up the division title and then home field throughout playoffs. Roll Saints!

I've been a Saints fan since I first saw them back in 1977, and even though I now live in Southern Cali (Reggie's neck of the woods, lol) I bleed Black & Gold. I've loved them in the BAD times, I loved them in the GOOD times, more often than not BAD, but I still love them. All you Saints Haters will never understand. If we go 16-0, or if we win the Superbowl or if we lose the rest of our games, or lose in the Playoffs TRUE SAINTS FAN will never stop loving our team.

    NOW WITH THAT BEING SAID:

This is truly a different team from any before. Teams of the past would have lost the last 3 games, this team knows HOW TO WIN. All the haters keep saying, "Saints have not done this or that" well lets check on that list.

Saints never won a game after bye week with Brees and Payton.
    CHECK
Brees never won against Miami Dolphins or when he has thrown 3 Int's.
    CHECK
Saints have not won at home against Panters in last 7 years.
    CHECK
    Saints never been 8-0
    CHECK
    Saints will not go 16-0
CHECK BACK AT THE END OF THE SEASON
Saints will never go or win a SuperBowl
    CHECK BACK Feb 8, 2010!!!

The Panthers played well but ultimately came out flat in the 2nd Half, which lays on the shoulders of Fox...it just puzzles me to see such a great team being brought down b/c of the lack of talent at one position...Jake, go back to your horses all ready...

...and, Who Dat? Well that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

saints really need to think about trading bush. For a solid starter on defense, or a top 10 first round pick. Like I said before. He has done well for the city of New Orleans, just not the Saints of New Orleans. Bell, Thomas, and Hamilton do just fine. Sorry bush just not a saint.

Being at the game yesterday and having someone give a pre-game cheer before we entered the Dome was unreal.. "never before seen" "they need us as we need them". Are some of the words said as he took sips of the beer of choice. Being inside that Dome I have been in since a kid was never that electric. Saints fans new and old are needed. It gives this place a sense realism.. For all who doubt the Saints are real need a gut check. You can try and pick apart why they won but they are the excuses because perfect is and always will be scrutinized. As individual members they are flawed but as the 2009/10 New Orleans Saints they are perfect.

He would've got at least 5 more yards each time. Dont tell me to lay off. Im a big fan of Mr. Bush. And one of the biggest Saints fans there is. Ive stuck by my team for over 35 years. Never wore a bag and thought the fans who did were @#$%s. Reggie has the power and he needs to use it more often is all Im saying brother. We're on the same side o' da fence so chill. Geaux Saints. I live in Atlanta, but my heart is with the Saints...who dat??? The big test will be when the Pats come to town...if they can survive the Pats, then I think they can take the NFC title. They match up well with the Pats on the field, but the game will be won or lost from the aspect of the Saints handling the hype and pressure (media) of playing the Pats. If the Saints are undefeated, it will be even greater. Either way, it should be a great game. I love the Pats and Saints, because I love teams that strive to be excellent year after year(Pats) and teams that are trying to formulate a plan to be excellent (Saints). GO SAINTS AND GO PATS....I'd love to see them both in the SUPER BOWL!!!!!
