Warner, Cardinals shred Bears 41-21

CHICAGO (AP)—From five interceptions to five touchdown passes, Kurt Warner’s(notes) one-week turnaround couldn’t have been more emphatic. Nor could the beating the Arizona Cardinals put on the Chicago Bears.

Warner tied a career high by throwing for five touchdowns after getting picked off five times the previous week, Larry Fitzgerald(notes) added 123 yards receiving, and the Cardinals easily handled the Bears 41-21 on Sunday.

Warner was at his best after a miserable performance in a 34-21 loss to Carolina. He handled a team that had a chance to sign him as a backup four years ago, matching the record for TD passes by a Bears opponent without getting intercepted.

“So much of this business is how you respond and how you come back,” Warner said. “I always want my teammates to know that I’m going to be there every week battling with them. And if I have a bad week, hopefully they can pick me up. If not, I’ll try to do my best the next.”

Two of his touchdowns went to Fitzgerald, who had his way with Charles Tillman(notes) before the cornerback left with a shoulder injury in the second quarter.

“Kurt played just phenomenal again,” said Fitzgerald, who has family in Chicago and spent summers here as a child. “He was making the right reads and getting the ball to the guys who were open. When we’re clicking like that, it’s hard to stop us.”

Warner was 22 of 31 for 261 yards and threw touchdown passes on the first four possessions as the Cardinals surged ahead 34-7 after three quarters.

The Bears (4-4) got within 34-21 after Zackary Bowman(notes) returned an interception by backup Matt Leinart(notes) 39 yards to the Arizona 28, setting up a 20-yard touchdown pass from Jay Cutler(notes) to Greg Olsen(notes) with 9:04 left. That prompted the Cardinals to put Warner back in the game.

Olsen had five catches for 71 yards and three touchdowns. Otherwise, it was a rough afternoon for Chicago, which is in danger of missing the playoffs for the third straight year.

Tim Hightower(notes) ran for 77 yards, Beanie Wells(notes) added 72 rushing and the Cardinals’ offense racked up 438 yards even though Arizona was missing wide receiver Anquan Boldin(notes).

He missed the game with a sprained right ankle, although he said it was fine.

“I’d felt better if somebody had been man enough and walked up to me and told me what the situation was,” Boldin said.

Despite missing one of their top receivers, the Cardinals (5-3) improved to 4-0 on the road.

And they didn’t have to contend with Chicago’s Tommie Harris(notes). The three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle slugged offensive guard Deuce Lutui(notes) in the head as they were on the ground on the game’s first possession, resulting in his ejection, and the Bears quickly unraveled.

Particularly troubling to coach Lovie Smith was Harris’ hit.

“I know the result,” Smith said. “There’s nothing Tommie can really tell me.”

Lutui said he was “really shocked” by the hit and called it “such a surprise that it happened.”

Harris did not make himself available to reporters after the game.

Cutler passed for 369 yards while completing 29 of 47 passes and was sacked four times.

The Bears have little time to regroup, with a Thursday night game at San Francisco.

Things weren’t looking good for the Bears after Harris got tossed for slugging Lutui near the face after they ended up on the ground following a run play. They only got worse from there.

His 11-yard touchdown pass to Fitzgerald capped the opening drive, giving the Cardinals a 7-0 lead. The Bears quickly tied it thanks to two long passes by Cutler—a 42-yarder to Devin Hester(notes) and a 33-yard touchdown to Olsen—but the Cardinals wasted no time busting open this game.

Arizona responded with a 74-yard drive Warner finished with a 6-yard pass to Ben Patrick(notes) that made it 14-7.

NOTES: Warner also threw for five touchdowns twice while with St. Louis: against San Francisco in October 1999 and against Minnesota in the playoffs in January 2000. … Arizona held out LB Gerald Hayes(notes) with a back injury. … Besides Harris and Tillman, the Bears lost S Al Afalava(notes) (shoulder) and backup RB Garrett Wolfe(notes) (back).

Hey Jake#268 get your facts straight if you want to be a Cutler hater! Was it Jay that gave up 30 points to Carolina and Buffalo respectively and 52 to the Chargers? No it was the piece of crap "D" that betrayed your Broncos of postseason and melted a 3 game lead and cost there coach his job! Your Broncos lost 4 of there last 5 home games as well. Funny how all you Bronco fans hate Cutler but don't seem to remember what stunt Mr Elway pulled off so he could play in the mile high city! Your 2008 Broncos collapsed was a total team effort and couldn't pull out 1 victory in the final 3! They choked! Speaking of choaking the couple of douchebag Vikqueen fans on this Bear website! Hey d-dawg I know y you have that handle and its only the obvious, you seem to know alot about sucking so why don't you fly your ass out to Arizona when your pathetic team comes out west, I'll get you on all fours like the d-dawg that you are and I'll give you a lil Purple Penis to suck on and you could spit it into the mouth of your vikingbowle buddy you f@$ks! Your pathetic team is built to be a 1 year wonder and when poor lil Brett pulls the same stunt with your franchise as he did with the Jets and the Packers your franchise is done and all the lil Minnesota fans will stop supporting and than your franchise will look to L.A! Sorry I love MY Lakers don't need to steal another franchise from your state! Go look to Texas since they took your North Stars. At least the Jets and Packers have Sanchez and Rodgers to fall back on! Who you got! whew! I feel much better now! Post#273 kenaj66 please tell me your not a Bear fan and bagging on Urlacher and his wrist injury? How as a Bear fan can you question the mans injury? Did you not see him on the sidelines still in cast on sunday? He wasn't on the sidelines horseplaying and gigling and collecting a game check! Hell Tommie only played 4 more plays than he did and Brian wan't even in uniform! Come on man get real. This just shows how missed he really is to the defense. No way in heck does Benson or Arizona run crazy like they did with him clogging up the middle. Notice this is the first time Bear opponents have scored 40 plus points in a season since the pre Urlacher days? That says alot and injuries are part of the game and I'm not, as a true Bear fan, going to make excuses cuz of injureis. His teammates need to look in the mirror and step up! The LB core is deep but depleted with injuries and I for one would like them to bring Brooks in for a shot. The seaon is only half over and there is plenty of time to make up ground and bringing in D. Brooks who is a veteran can only help. Besides that he is a leader and this Bears team is lacking that big time. Losing Brian and Mike Brown is only now showing the lack of leadership on the "D"! Lance and Wally are not the rah! rah! type and Tommie need we say anymore! Alex Brown wants to do something and his other defensive teammates need to speak up as well. Jay has been sacked 19 times in 8 games so far or 8 more times than all of last seaon. This is a gut check game this thursday for the Bears! Prime time with all there fans to witness and other football fans to see if Chicago is a contender or pretenders. Can't get any worse than being 4-4 at the halfway point but its starts this week in San Fran and fighting, playing hard with passion and finishing strong is all we could ask for as Bear fans! Go Bears!!!!!

Can't wait for all the Viking fans to see what Favre does to them at the end of the year. You think you already have the Super bowl won. I would chill out a little and see what happens.

As for the Bears..Lovie brought this on himself when he let Rivera walk away and brought in his own guy. And now this year he's gonna call the defense plays himself. Yes, the vaunted St. Louis Ram defense always come to mind when we talk about great defenses doesn't it?
Not bashing the Bears, as I am a lifelong fan of them. Just decided after the Bengals and now the Cardinals, this isn't our year. And we don't have a 1 or 2 next year..not good.

Isn't funny how every Defensive unit that plays in the same Jersey as Cutler seems to struggle? Denver endured the turnover's, 3 and out's, long pass attemepts that sometimes resulted in a TD, most of the time not. Its the same story. This guy has a cannon of an arm and the media loves him. At the combine he will kill the stat line and when you see him warm up you are in awe. But that isnt how the NFL works. Raiders drafted Hayward-Bey over Crabtree because he was the FASTEST WR. Hahahaha - it doesnt matter. Denver fans like myself who had to watch him for 3 years as our defense was gased and on the field WAY too much understood the problem and tried to warn all you Chicago fans about what was to come. Why is Denvers defense so much better all of the sudden? Easy answer - THEY ARE HARDLY ON THE FIELD. Other than the Baltimore game the Broncos have won the time of possesion battle all season. The defense is fresh. Use any excuse you want to, but Kyle Orton doesnt throw interceptions. IS he a pro bowler, no way. But his QB rating is fantastic every game, he does sustain drives, and is a proven winner. There can be no arguement of jealousy here. 3 years of under 500 football in Denver does not make us "want him back" - TRUST ME! WE ARE GLAD HE IS GONE!!! He doesnt play defense, but as Chicago fans are finding out, just like Bronco fans did, he sure doesnt help a defense. It doesnt matter how good your running backs and WR's are, as long as you have Cutler he will still lose. He lost with talent in Denver, and he is now losing with talent in Chicago. Denver would take Knox, Hester, and Olsen anyday - BUT YOU CAN KEEP CUTLER. At least you gave him his money right. Good job Chicago. Go ahead, fire Lovie - He isnt the problem. Jay Cutler is. Cutler cost Shannahan his job in Denver, and now Lovie's soon. It's a shame one QB could be responsible for 2 or more coaches job's. Maybe one day NFL GM's will stop listening to the medias "strong arm" hype, and start getting good QB's instead of firing the coach because he was stuck with him. Cutler is a Coach Killer ... aka Jeff George. That is all he will ever be!

Alright Bears fans. You are going to hear it from someone who has put up with a whole lot of #@$*^&% football since the 1960's watching this team. The Bears problem is organizational for starters. The McCaskey Family is the football owner equivalent of William Wurtz. Look at the 40 years of futility by the Blackhawks before he finally collected his last Stadium/United Center liquor profit. The McCaskeys just don't care the same. D'Angelo is a meat head that has never understood how to seek, scout and sign good young talent. Then we have a coaching staff that is inept at understanding how to use the players according to their talent level. You can't win if the organization does not have a winning framework. Finally the organization goes out and signs a QB that can throw the long ball. But what help does he have? Receivers that don't come back to the QB on a blitz, that don't complete their pass patterns to run into the soft spot of a zone, that don't know how to shake a sticky CB. An offensive line that can't pass block. Most people don't remember Erik Cramer, the last quality caliber QB the Bears had before so many other average at best QBs since then. It was the same back then. A playbook that didn't creatively take advantage of his throwing skills. How long do we have to watch the D blitzing up the middle to have the opposing O throw a quick screen away from the pressure? How long do we have to watch the cover 2 get burned on crossing patterns, slants and deep outs? This organization continues to bumble with mistake after mistake. They need to get rid of D'Angelo and bring in a knowledgable GM who knows how to scout and sign quality young players. The coaching staff needs the same makeover. Gosh, can't this organization do better than Dave Wannstedt, Jauron and Lovie Smith? This current team lacks quality management and planning from player selection right down to play designs and calling. Until that changes expect Cutler to continue to be hounded and for me to have other things to do on Sunday when these Bears play. Love the new Blackhawks. Thank you Rocky!

Max, Favre a good teammate? He personally ran Jevan Walker off the team getting involved in his contract dispute, the whole Jets franchise turned on him, or never accepted him to begin with given his pre-Madonna aura, and he talked about retiring for three off seasons in a row before finally retiring, only to blame the Packers management for forcing him to. He's a cry baby and in fact a bad teammate. It's always been all about him. No, Favre was the quarterback for a number of talented teams that were composed of underrated players. I mean Donald Driver is now just beginning to get recognition for being an elite receiver. He's been an elite receiver ever since he pretty much entered the league. There's never been any "team in Favre, he's always been above them.

After watching Cutler for a couple of years and reading about him, I suspect you can put him in the same bag with Jeff George--a guy with all the talent in the world but a serious lack of TEAM spirit. Give me a TEAM of above average players with good chemistry above a bunch of super stars without the chemistry every time. Why do you think Favre is arguably the best quarterback that ever played? It's because his teammates, Green Bay or Minneapolis, LOVE him. They will put everything they have on the line for him. Show me one member of Chicago or Denver that loves Cutler.

my opinion is if we played the kronkos we would kick their ass, ok you guys r having a great season but you guys r going to get your assess kicked by blitzberg. as far as orton i liked him when he was with the bears and would have been better this year with hester olsen and knox and forte. as for lovie and turner need to go. my question is why werent we going with a no huddle 2min offense, why did the defense look confused and terrible. all these problems are 90% coaching and 10% players. hey at least alex brown had the balls to tell the truth. we been working on the defense for years we need to start letting some of these guys go and drafting and signing free agents(angelos job, hasnt done it good enough time to go). lovie wants to call the defense then be a d-coordinator stop being a head coach with a million excuses why the cover 2 doesnt work. stop putting players out of their positions, and hire better coaches that are not your friends. and turner please go away with your 2 yard passess and killing forte with running up the middle 3x in a row when the other team knows we r going to that play at the goal line. im a die hard bears fan and i hate to c my team playing this way next year we should terminate the coaching staff and the gm cause it just isnt working. cowher is out there gruden and the ravens ex coach could be a defensive coordinator if the bears decide to keep lovie. we need change chicago deserves better and if the mccaskeys want to keep things the way they r then fans should start staying home for the games and giving up their season passess. lets see how they react to that. go bears!!!!!!!!!!1

post 259, I won't deny that the '06 team had a better o-line but Thomas Jones had much better vision than Forte. He never should have been traded. That act alone began this current downfall. I mean Grossman couldn't help but get off to a slow start in '07 what with Benson going down at first contact and failing to find the while and the receivers suddenly growing butter fingers, bringing on the Brian Griese dink and dunk parade. And you're right the offense did receive a lot of "gifts" from the defense, but that goes back to my point about being a team game. Cutler's not good at sustaining long drives. He's normally three and out, a quick six or a turnover. That doesn't leave the D off the field long enough, while holding them accountable for many more stops. It's a team game, it always has been, that's why trading for Cutler was stupid, as was giving up on Grossman. Cutler has all the tools, except where it counts the most; in the head. I just don't see any football smarts in him nor within the organization. Believe me I'm a frustrated fan. Rebellion is a lot more refreshing. Maybe there's a billy goat type curse I can place on the QB position. Or wait, maybe somebody already has....

Post#254, I agree with you up to a point. I had nothing against either Grossman or Orton. Your right, that 2006 offense was explosive and pretty damn good. But to say that the O.L is the same is not true. Thomas Jones had plenty of lanes to run through and Grossman had more time. Lets face it, Grossman is not as nimble as Cutler but they are both gunslingers and we need more our receivers this year. You have to remember, our offense back in 06 was also getting plenty of gifts from our defense, fumbles, interceptions, etc.... I have nothing against Cutler- he can throw with the best of them, but he is on a sinking ship.

There is trouble from within starting at the coaching level. Wide outs do not know how to come back to the ball when Jay is flushed, they just stand there making zero effort. This is a tema in complete turmoil and it's like award the player who tries the least. Coaching confidence is probably the lowest in 3 decades. 6-10 at best for this group with # 1 and # 2 draft picks given up in 2010. 2010 season will be worst.

The same Bears fans who are praising Cutler's play and the trade for him are the same morons who booed Grossman and Orton out of town, blaming them for the teams shortcomings instead of recognizing the obvious; that football is a team game, that the SB loss in '06 had more to do with a coaching staff that failed to adjust as the game went on and a defense that couldn't keep the Colts off the field, than of a QB who turned the ball over, as QB's will do (Cutler's on pace to throw more picks than Grossman or Orton ever did). My how it makes me laugh to hear the apologists saying "If only we had an o-line, if only we had better coaching, if only we had better receivers. What the hell do you think Orton and Grossman were dealing with? I mean Grossman led the Bears to the number 2 offense in the league in 2006 with a below average offensive line (Kruetz has never been above average, but he gets a good Madden rating every year. I can't explain the pro bowls, they've all been undeserved) and receivers to boot. That says more about what Grossman was able to do with so little than what Cutler is struggling with. No, I've been a life long Bears fan, a fanatic in fact, but that love fest began to end in '07 when Angelo traded away Thomas Jones for a song, only so his first round pick could get the rock, talk about an ego trip, and was finished when I saw the ignorance of Bears fans taking their frustrations out on Grossman, the subsequent Cutler trade and so forth, and all the Orton bashing. I realized at this point that Chicago sports fans are morons, and by being a Chicago sports fan that made me a moron (but to be fair most people are morons). So I made the only decision I could and this is the most I've enjoyed the Bears since '06. I canceled my Sunday ticket, so I saved a few bucks there and I don't miss it a bit, and now I don't have to be bothered by the misery that comes along with ignorance. In this case Bears fans, ignorance isn't bliss. It's Jay Cutler, and it's gonna be a long, long time before Chicago has a team that can rival the talent they had in '06. Idiots. Enjoy your turnover machine, who by the way has never QB'd a winner his whole life, going back to high school. The best he's ever finished is .500

Post #240, are you some retarded Denver fan that can't get over it. You say that Cutler was the reason you guys could not close out the games, umm hello, your defense last year was one of the most pathetic around. Look what Jay has to work with in Chicago. Half of the guys are punt or kick returners converted to wide outs. Jay is not the reason Chicago is 4-4. Maybe that Green Bay game but something more obvious. Bears defense is playing like the Broncos did last year. Cover 2 Tampoon defense needs to go, even a QB like Mark Sanchez could pass on this defense. Also, Bears have some O.L issues and a running game that is in neutral for most of the season. You denver fans are really funny though, that 1st round pick will help you what. Get knocked out of the first round of the playoffs ha. I thought Baltimore brought you back down to earth cuz in my book, your Broncos team is not even in the same breathe as th elite AFC
