Turner gets last laugh on Hall, Falcons win 31-17

ATLANTA (AP)—A melee breaks out along the Falcons sideline, and who’s right in the middle of it?

DeAngelo Hall(notes), of course.

“I was pretty sure,” said Atlanta receiver Roddy White(notes), a former teammate, “that he had something to do with it.”

What Hall desperately wanted to do Sunday was beat the Falcons. Michael Turner(notes) made sure that wouldn’t happen with a season-high 166 yards rushing, including two long touchdowns, and Atlanta snapped a two-game losing streak by beating Hall and the Washington Redskins 31-17.

Hall, who made two Pro Bowls playing for the Falcons from 2004-07, yapped away all week about how Atlanta treated him unfairly before a trade to Oakland. He didn’t even make it through one season with the Raiders and landed in Washington.

Turner was just too much to handle in Hall’s return to the Georgia Dome. He broke off a 30-yard touchdown run to help the Falcons build a 24-3 halftime lead, then finished off Washington with a 58-yard score early in the fourth quarter.

Hall was the last guy to have a shot at the burly running back on that clinching TD, but the cornerback—giving away more than 50 pounds—slid right off when he tried to make a tackle around the shoulder pads.

“I didn’t notice it was him,” Turner said, a zinger even though he didn’t mean it to be.

Hall might want to keep his mouth shut the next time he faces the Falcons (5-3), but he was still jabbering away after the game. He threatened to call commissioner Roger Goodell, accusing the Falcons of losing their cool—coach Mike Smith(notes) included—after LaRon Landry’s(notes) late hit on Matt Ryan(notes) set off a near-brawl in the second quarter.

As flags flew, the outspoken cornerback jumped into the middle of things, surrounded by a horde of Atlanta players and an angry Smith. Hall was yanked away before any punches were thrown and insisted that he didn’t do anything wrong.

“Guys just started coming at me,” Hall said. “It wasn’t any mindset to break the fight up. It was in a mindset to try to get some licks in. Even the head coach came over there. Mike Smith said some stuff, said some words to me, cussed me out. He was grabbing at me, pulling at me.”

Smith refused to trade barbs with Hall, saying he was merely trying to break up the scuffle and didn’t even know the former Falcons player was involved. But defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux(notes) said the team figured Hall would try to stir things up.

“That’s DeAngelo,” Babineaux said. “That’s what gets him going. You can’t fall into what he’s doing or he’ll have you where he wants you.”

After a slow start to the season, Turner is getting back to where he wants to be—something akin to the form that made him the league’s second-leading rusher a year ago with 1,699 yards. He followed up a 20-carry, 151-yard effort against New Orleans with an even better performance against the Redskins, who had one of the league’s top-rated defenses.

“Enough was enough,” he said.

Washington (2-6) looked down and out at the midway point, having lost running back Clinton Portis(notes) to an apparent concussion. But Jason Campbell(notes), who endured five sacks in the first half, directed a pair of 13-play scoring drives on Washington’s first two possessions of the second half to close the gap to 24-17.

“They ended up having a little bit of pride in what they were doing,” embattled coach Jim Zorn said.

But Turner wasn’t done. Taking the handoff on what looked to be a routine play between the tackles, he found an opening, leaped over a diving Landry trying to take him down at the ankles, shook off Hall’s attempted tackle with ease and rumbled the rest of the way for the clinching score.

The speedy Hall didn’t even attempt to chase Turner down, realizing he was gone. So had any chance of getting revenge against the Falcons.

Campbell took quite a beating in the first half behind a makeshift line. The Falcons matched a franchise record by sacking him five times before halftime, knocking him out of the game for one play late in the second quarter.

Campbell went out again after another shot in the fourth but returned to finish. He was 15 of 22 for 196 yards, including a 3-yard touchdown pass to Todd Yoder(notes) that gave the Redskins a chance.

But Campbell also threw a pass that was intercepted by Tye Hill(notes) and returned 62 yards for a touchdown, part of Atlanta’s early barrage.

NOTES: With Portis out, Ladell Betts(notes) rushed for 70 yards on 15 carries, including a 1-yard touchdown. … Hill had his first interception since 2007. … Ryan threw another interception, his eighth in the last four games, and was held to a season-low 135 yards passing.

Landry has talent, but the kid is dumb as a rock... he will never learn to stop the cheap shots, he has not gone a game without being slapped with a 15 yarder.... another example of how bad the coaching is in Washington; I mean he's no Sean Taylor but he is a good player.

Hall is a mediocre CB, always has been always will be... one of the worst big money signings made last year. The Redskins are just a train wreck... I went to the game yesterday and they look even more lethargic in person than on Television…. No one on the sidelines even seems to care about what is happening on the field.

Offense, Defense and Special teams, the whole team is just plain bad.

Deangelo Hall is just another nut-job from Virginia Tech. What is it with that school? Here are a just a few examples of the crazy sh!t you can expect from the Hokies: Deangelo Hall troublemaker, Mike Vick the dog-executor, some Korean kid goes on a shooting rampage killing countess "class-mates", Chinese kid cuts off his girlfriend's head, and the latest nut-job who shot up Fort Hood is a Va Tech grad. Who am I leaving out? Va Tech nut-jobs!!

Ive read alot of these post and agree with some, but watching the game yesterday i think the blame goes to that pothetic excuse for an offensive line yeah they block good some of the time but 95 percent they sucked. And Mr. overrated Moss would you like some super glue to help you catch the ball TWO big drops says it all for him. And this NO3 defense got a reality check against the Eagles and now Falcons, they might have been thinking about blaming the offense for the losses and right fully so, but looking at the offensive teams we have played they have found out the last two game as we as fans have that there not really much better, when the offense finally gets us to with in a touchdown and some momentum the defenseless lets the falcons go right down the field and score. Overall we just plain SUCK!

Thanks to RJMac for having my back on this board........I honestly didn't have time to trifle with "sho" or whoever that is. Since sho's post is nowhere to be found this morning, I am guessing that others complained about the content, resulting in removal of the comment. That action alone speaks volumes to the relevance of sho's comments.

I apologize for the delay in responding......I was too busy watching the Birds destroy the Skins......

    Props again to RJMac.......

I would love to see V Cerrato get canned too hes the one responsible for picking J Campbell in the first round of the draft. What a waste that pick was, hes also responsible for bringing all those talentless players that have made the Redskins the sorry team that they are today. FIRE THIS GUY ALREADY.

well, lets see..im living here in Michigan where the Detroit Lions lost every game last season, but i grew up in Washington, DC where it seems this year the Redskins may as well do the same thing!..im still a die hard fan though..maybe i've grown up, and im missing the glory years when the 'Skins worked together to form the chemistry that made opponents cringe..now it seems teams look forward to playing Washington with a knowledge that its an automatic 'W'..overall, im still a fan whether they win or lose...

Falcons, falcons, and i no its seems to be clear that they have some work on defense. but dallas and saints will lose because they have exposed these teams --- and if the falcons finally decide to call ----- the right plays on offense the defense add some depth ----- a lot of teams will hate playin them----- (dallas without their broken lucky offense plays are trash) they will not win the nfc ----- go falcons---

I just thought i would point out that the falcons have only allowed ONE hundred yard rusher this season. (Fred Taylor 105yds) I really think that they dont get enough credit for their run defense. Also I was in denial when he was here but Deangelo Hall SUCKS!!!!!

    GO FALCONS!!!!!!!

One of the reasons for Atlanta's turnaround last year was cutting ties with DeAngelo Hall. He thought of himself as a leader but held the defense back with his attitude. He confused big talk with toughness. It didn't take Oakland long to figure it out and I don't think that it will take a class defense like Washington long either.
