Delhomme hurt as Panthers beat Cardinals 34-21

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP)—Jake Delhomme(notes) left Arizona a winner, even if he had to take a trip to the hospital before he left town.

The embattled Carolina quarterback, whose downward spiral began with a playoff loss at home against Arizona last season, threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to Steve Smith before leaving with a chest injury in the Panthers’ 34-21 victory over the Cardinals on Sunday.

The Panthers, in a turnover-free performance, rolled up 270 yards on the ground against what had been the No. 1 rushing defense in the NFL.

It was the second-most yards rushing in franchise history, behind 299 against Tampa Bay last season, and a measure of revenge after Arizona beat the Panthers 33-13 at Carolina in last season’s playoffs.

“There was a special interest on this game,” Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams(notes) said.

Arizona’s Kurt Warner(notes) was intercepted five times and fumbled the ball away once. Julius Peppers(notes) returned one of the picks 13 yards for a touchdown.

Coincidentally, Delhomme was intercepted five times and fumbled once in that playoff loss. He had a league-worst 13 picks this season entering Sunday.

Delhomme played a series after he was hurt, then was taken to a hospital for tests. He said after returning to the stadium that nothing serious was discovered. He described the injury as a “chest contusion.”

After throwing three interceptions in last Sunday’s home loss to Buffalo, Delhomme had to wait until Wednesday to find out if he still was the starter.

“To say it was the lowest point I ever had as a Panther, probably,” he said. “So after a ton of self-searching and soul searching, I was looking forward to going back out there and play, just play.”

His statistics weren’t impressive, but he made no big mistakes and the Panthers’ punishing ground game did the rest.

“That is the way we like to play,” Delhomme said. “We have been turning it over and I have been the big culprit and we didn’t do that today. That was the big thing, and the defense got a ton of turnovers.”

Delhomme was 7 of 14 for 90 yards, including the first scoring pass to a wide receiver for the Panthers this season.

Williams rushed for 158 yards on 23 carries, including a 77-yarder to set up Stewart’s 10-yard touchdown run that put Carolina (3-4) up for good 14-7 on the first play of the second quarter. Stewart gained 87 yards in 17 attempts.

“We knew what they were going to do and we couldn’t stop it,” Arizona nose tackle Bryan Robinson(notes) said.

Warner completed 27 of 46 for 242 yards and two touchdowns. Two of his interceptions were tipped.

“It just seemed like every time the ball was bouncing somewhere, it went into their hands,” Warner said. “It’s to their credit. They were hustling. They were running all over the football field.”

Delhomme was hurt on a hard hit by Arizona’s Chike Okeafor(notes) and Darnell Dockett(notes) with 5:59 left in the third quarter. He got to his knees, then slowly walked off the field, but was back for the next series before leaving for good.

On the bench, he said he began to feel “a little chilly” and “kind of a little weak.” That led to the trip to the hospital.

The Cardinals (4-3) remained in first in the NFC West because San Francisco lost at Indianapolis, but the ugly performance often drew boos from the capacity crowd. Arizona has lost more home games than it did all of last season.

Each team scored on its first possession. Stewart scored on a 6-yard run, then Warner threw 14 yards to rookie LaRod Stephens-Howling(notes) for his NFL touchdown.

“It’s very disappointing that we aren’t playing better at home right now,” coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “We have the same record that we were at this time last year. I still feel like we’re a better football team. We just didn’t play that way today.”

With the Panthers leading 21-7, Arizona Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie(notes) bit on Delhomme’s pump fake, freeing Smith to run alone downfield on a 50-yard touchdown pass play and it was 21-7 with 7:33 left in the half.

Five seconds later, on the Cardinals’ next play from scrimmage, Peppers stepped in Warner’s way and picked off the short pass, running untouched to make it 28-7.

The Cardinals cut it to 28-14 and 31-21 but could get no closer as John Kasay(notes) kicked field goals of 35 and 31 yards in the fourth quarter.

“To come on the road, playing a good football team, one that handled us pretty good in the playoffs a year ago,” Carolina coach John Fox said, “it was a big win for a lot of reasons.”

Arizona’s Anquan Boldin(notes) played despite an ankle injury that limited him in practice all week. However, he aggravated the injury in the third quarter, left the game and did not return. He caught three passes to make him the Cardinals’ career leader in receptions.

NOTES: Peppers also forced a fumble by Warner. … Martin started because Charles Godfrey(notes) is out with an injury. … Arizona’s next opponent, Chicago, rushed for 170 yards against Cleveland, one of the NFL’s worst defenses, on Sunday.

Just as long as Delhomme throws less, Carolina will win.

Davidson is a moron, buffalo had the worst run d in the nfl, and we pass 40+ times, az has the best run d in the nfl, and we run 40+ times. he needs to go, our drunk gm needs to go, joke delhomo needs to go, and that bum peppers needs to go, one good game doesnt make him worth 1.1 mil a game, at least he earned around 500k today for a change. not all of us have forgotten he had 2 tackles vs the cards last season, one when he fell down and was pushed into hightower. you guys also need to realize if warner doesnt throw those 5 picks, we lose. drunk ass hurney could have traded peppers for a qb before the deadline, now were stuck in the exact same situation next season. and for that stupid chick, its y'all, not ya'll, there are no such words to contract ya and ll. you all, is the long version, once again, its y'all. stop insulting southerners misspelling our vernacular!

I am glad that the Panthers won -- it's been a rough start this year. I think Jake needed to get that, "Screw it, let's just play" attitude back (which came when he realized he had nothing else to lose, cause his job was not going to be his any longer if he didn't play). I think the Panthers are brilliant when they just "Shut up and Play" -- Go Peppers, Go Smith, Go Hoover ! You guys looked like you were having fun again, and the score board showed it!

Ok....true enough THE PANTHERS haven't been performing up-to-par but to say that they lack confidence or that Jake INTENTIONALLY removed himself from the game due to pressure and NOT wanting to give the game away. As a "DIE HARD" FAN i support them win\lose, pass\fail, good\bad(1-15) (15-1) regardless of the outcome. Yes we as fans get frustrated from observing or saying we(they) should have done this or that. The season ISN'T OVER!! Did we f-- up some plays? YES!! John Fox has great faith in dude and yes he was lax in recognizing we are a running team, so all in all my opinion is just that MY OPINION!! I LOVE THEM BOYS!!! GO PANTHERS....WE DA F--- BEST!!! STEWART,MUHAMMAD, SMITH AND WILLIAMS (MMMUAH)

Lol you people all complain about a QB who still has a decent record of 3-4...how about taking your anger out on QB's that truly do SUCK...Such as the Browns, or Tampa Bay...Where are all the haters their. Sure Delhomme isn't doing the best job this year but the facts still stand that last year they were 12-4, and its still quite possible that they can turn their season around. Now what about Mangini and Anderson...OMG...Im not a Browns fan and I feel bad for them. Heres a guy who what in the past 4 games hasnt thrown for more then 30 yards a game? THE ENTIRE GAME?!....Take your anger and hate out on him.

The game yesterday just proves that Fox and whoever else is responsible for the play calling might need to be fired. It took them 8 games to remember that the Panthers are a running team.

I hate to continue any kind of trend but in this case i feel that the incident cannot go without mentioning. I know that Jake Delhomme has caught his fair share of deserved criticism and is lucky to have no sort of back-up insuring his lock on the starting job but the impression that I got from Jake in this game was sad. He had played well enough to get the lead (that should actually say all he did was not lose the game) but decided to come out for a possible injury. That injusry, a chest contusion? This cannot be real, can it? Would a "competitor" who has struggled all year to get some respect take him self out of the game so that he wouldn't lose it once again? I'm not saying he didn't suffer some kind of injury, but the true competitors and those with a little respect would have come out on that field and enjoyed finishing the game as a winner. He didn't come out when the game was out of hand by any means, he was running away from the pressure and to see that from the "leader" of the team produces nothing but a lack of confidence.

what did we learn? keep it around 10 pass attempts per game. RUN. that's how we win. Game was awesome. If we remember the formula then i can't wait for next week Rob. How does Sharper get TDs if no one ever throws the ball? Next week looks similar to the Miami vs. NO game. One difference, pass defense.

jake is a has been it time to start looking at replacing him. I agree the backup they got now are not the answer but maybe give moore a chance to play once in awhile and he could be a good start in the right way. while we are replacing people let also get get rid of bone head fox too. think he seen his better days as a coach.
