McNabb throws 3 TDs in Eagles’ 40-17 win

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—The Eagles were in the rarest of positions on a football Sunday. They served as the opening act of a New York-Philly twinbill instead of kicking off as the main event.

Donovan McNabb(notes) and DeSean Jackson(notes) still put on a dynamic show and the first round of the doubleheader was scored in favor of the Eagles by brutal knockout.

McNabb threw three touchdown passes and Jackson had another big TD catch as the Philadelphia Eagles took a 40-17 win over a mistake-prone Eli Manning(notes) and the New York Giants on Sunday.

“When you play these NFC East teams, you prepare for a heavyweight fight,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said.

The game was just the appetizer in a marathon day in the contentious NY-Philadelphia rivalry. The Yankees and Phillies were set for the first pitch of Game 4 of the World Series across the street only hours after the Eagles’ rout ended.

The Eagles (5-2) remained undefeated in the division and host Dallas next week. Philly continued its victorious run over NFC East teams a week after beating Washington.

However, McNabb knows the NFC East race isn’t over yet.

“The challenges are everyone has a big head and bouncing around like it’s going to happen every week,” McNabb said.

The Eagles dominated without running back Brian Westbrook(notes), who sat out after he suffered a concussion in the win over the Redskins. His absence caused Reid to add a new wrinkle to the offense: a fullback. Rarely asked to carry the ball under Reid, Leonard Weaver(notes) was an integral part early and helped catch the scuffling Giants by surprise.

The Eagles needed only three plays to score when Weaver ran 41 yards up the middle for a touchdown.

“It felt spacious,” Weaver said. “You don’t get a whole lot of opportunities as a fullback to feel what ‘open field’ is.”

It only got better from there for the Eagles—and their fans in the home green jerseys dotted with red Phillies caps.

The next drive—launched when Asante Samuel(notes) picked off Manning—saw a McNabb to tight end Brent Celek(notes) TD called back on a penalty. No worries. The two connected on a 17-yard score two plays later and a 13-0 lead.

It’s point totals such as this that make it all the more puzzling that the Eagles could go without a touchdown in a loss at lowly Oakland two weeks ago.

“When I can explain those things, I’ll be undefeated,” Reid said.

LeSean McCoy(notes), Westbrook’s backup, joined in the fun on a 66-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that made it 40-17.

By then, fans from both teams could hit the parking lots and resume their tailgating. Philly fans ended the game chanting “Let’s go Phillies!” in the waning minutes.

“What a great day in Philadelphia today,” Reid said. “Two games against the same city team. It’s a great atmosphere for the fans of Philadelphia.”

New York (5-3) has lost three straight games after starting the season 5-0 for the first time since 1990. Manning continuously threw high over his receivers or was the victim of bad route running and threw two interceptions.

“You don’t expect it when you win five straight,” Manning said. “You’re feeling good, you’re feeling great and then, to lose three in a row especially, you just don’t feel like you’re playing your best.”

The Giants, eliminated by the Eagles in the NFC divisional game last season, were still in this one late in the second quarter after Manning’s 18-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Boss(notes) made it 16-7.

Five minutes were left in the half. Enough time to get to the break and regroup.

Wrong.

McNabb went deep to a wide open Jackson for a 54-yard touchdown on the first play after the kickoff. Jackson has become the top target McNabb’s lacked since Terrell Owens(notes) was in town dancing after scores and stirring the locker room.

Jackson, also a threat on punt returns, tied a team record with his sixth TD of the season of 50-plus yards.

Another overthrown Manning pass was intercepted by Quintin Demps(notes), and McNabb needed two plays to find Jeremy Maclin(notes) on a 23-yard touchdown and a 30-7 halftime lead.

Quick strikes, long strikes. McNabb, who broke a rib in the opener and missed the next two games, threw for 240 yards and was not intercepted.

Manning brought the Giants back from a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win in overtime here in 2006.

Any thoughts of a similar comeback were squashed when Domenik Hixon(notes) fumbled the second-half kickoff. The turnover set up David Akers’(notes) 35-yard field goal, he also kicked a 30-yarder in the second quarter, and the Eagles continued their streak of having all their wins be by double-digit margins.

“That’s not the kind of football we teach and that’s not what we’re all about, but there it was again,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said.

^Notes: Jackson tied Timmy Brown (1962) for the team single-season record of most TDs of 50-plus yards. … Akers had a PAT attempt blocked after Celek’s TD. … The Eagles are 24-11 against the NFC in November and December since 2000.

BTW: As bad of a slump that Eli is in right now, I'd rather have him than 85% of the QBs in this league. He wins big games, performs when his team needs him the most, and GENERALLY doesn't turn the ball over. Hes been a bit inconsistent this year, but perhaps that is because he has seemed out-of-the-groove with his young WRs. Still, Eli has a great arm, great accuracy and often times looks like his older brother (of course, that isn't to say he has the skills of Peyton because he doesn't). Only QBs right now that I'd take over Eli are Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Kurt Warner. Most QBs in this lead are even more inconsistent than Eli has been over these past three games.

Expect the number 1 Giants defense to wake the @#$% up and PLAY like the number 1 defense in a hurry. Osi Umenyiora, Justin Tuck, Fred Robbins, Barry Cofield...the defensive front is as solid as solid can get. They aren't PLAYING solid, and thats a problem. The secondary is young and hurt, and the LB core needs to perform better but I put a lot of blame on Bill Sheridan for not bringing the rush that Steve Spagnuolo had with these boys. I don't know a better front four in this ENTIRE LEAGUE, though...they are just under-performing.

There is nothing scarier than an under-performing defense like the NY Giants have. No team can right them off, and its tough to cover both Umenyiora and Tuck on the ends. Sheridan needs to shape them up and get them back to playing football...and this is the reason why NOBODY can write off the Giants. Not the critics, not the NFL insiders...you have to respect this front four when they bring the pressure.

I think the Eagles will beat the Cowboys. They have a playmaking defense that will pressure Romo and cause him to turn the ball over either through interceptions, fumbles, or both. I believe the Eagles will be highly charged for this game and will make big plays on offense just like they did against the Giants. They will need to run the ball well; if they mix things up between McCoy, Weaver, and occasionally Jackson, they should be fine. They won't even need Westbrook necessarily. Jeremy Maclin is only going to get better. With Jackson, Celek, and Maclin going, the Eagles will be win this one easily.

Eli throwing a couple of interceptions is not the big problem, it's the Giant defense letting the other team just walk down the field. The giants need to do something pretty quick to get their pass defense going or any team that has a quarterback that can throw will just keep scoring on them. The giants look like they are trying to soley rely on rushing the quarterback and if this is the case it's not working. Eli on the other hand looks like his foot is bothering him regardless of him saying so or not which can easily account for what's happening on that end.

This only goes to show you that the Gnats are overrated and their punka$$ defense was exposed.

Filthy, I mean, Philly is on a roll....but so are my Cowboys...who actually do have more than one receiver who will score AND a run game that cant be stopped. Also, dont expect for that little bastard DeSean Jackson to have a big game like he has been having..

Hey WADE your right and wrong about the Cowboys. Cowboys Offense is realy good and is going to be realy hard to stop Espicaly when Romo and Willams get there chemistrey going. Austin, Patrick, Hurd are doing well. But I can't wait for Willams to get going on the Offense becuase hes going to be a threat in the Red Zone. The Curse in December isn't real. Cowboys are going to be playing good football in December as long as everybody stays helathy and works hard every day in practice and play mistake free football and play as a team football instead of a me team. T.O was the problem that ruined the Cowboys last year. Cowboys are going to be a 11 or 12 win team this year. Cowboys have 12-6-09 and 12-27-09 games on the road that can cause some concerns for the players becuase those 2 games are going to be played in realy cold weather. Thats at the G-men and Skins house. Lets GO COWBOYS

SuperStar Impact The Birds kicked the Cowboys ass last year on that 44-6 game. When the Birds put 8 guys in the box to stop the run, then Jason Witten or Bennet will get open for the big play as well as haveing Austin and Willams and Patrick will be makeing some big plays for the Cowboys. If Brian Westbrook doesn't play in this game, then the Birds won't be able to run the ball and go ahead and bring in Vick to play the Wild Cat and the Cowboys D will stuff it. The only way the Birds are going to have any chance at winning agaisnt the Cowboys is if Brian Westbrook is going to play, becuase with out him the Birds are going to be forced to throw the ball and then McNab will be throwing INT's All night long. Cowboys are going to be cutting som wings off the Birds. Enjoy 5-3 after Sundays Loss. Philies are going to lose tonight to the Yankees. I give props to the Philiees for makeing the World Series becuase they were one of the worst base ball teams in the MLB. Even though MLB is a JOKE. MLB needs a Salary Cap in place. Lets GO COWBOYS

Superstar if the Eagle try to stop the run the Romo will go to the air. you can't just man up on the the WR now they have too many of them the cowboys have too many weapons on off. now to just man up on the WR if they did that all the cowboys going to do is spread them out so they will be out of the way so they can start running the ball, I think the cowboys got this for the month of Nov. but when Dec. get here its a whole new world for the Curse of the cowboys, but for now enjoy the Wins

Like I have said before, Mr. Reese please think about the team in the coming LONG OFF season (G-men are not going to make the playoffs). Recommendations:
    1. Tom C, Gilbride, and sherridan have to go. (It is time to get young guys with innovative ideas into the coaching staff. ) These guys have consistently shown that they have no new fresh ideas.
    2. Get some good secondary/corners. Get rid of CC brown and any other person on D that needs to be taught at their level on how to tackle.
    3. Cancel Eli's EXTREMELY OVERATED CONTRACT and get someone better. It just kills to see we let Rivers get out of our hands. If I am not mistaken, we might have had Big Ben.

It is horrible to see these guys take the field.
