Ginn’s 2 kickoff returns lead Dolphins past Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—Ted Ginn Jr.(notes) was angry, his ego bruised by an embarrassing benching.

The Miami wide receiver took out his frustration on the New York Jets, returning two long kickoffs for touchdowns in the third quarter, and the Dolphins’ defense held on for a 30-25 victory Sunday.

“Not being in that starting lineup hurt me deep down inside,” Ginn said. “I just wanted to make plays. You don’t always have to be a starter to make plays.”

Ginn certainly made that point loud and clear.

Benched in favor of rookie Brian Hartline(notes), Ginn made all the difference on special teams by returning kickoffs of 100 and 101 yards for scores. He also became the first player to return two kickoffs for touchdowns in the same quarter since Green Bay’s Travis Williams(notes) in 1967, according to STATS LLC.

“To be who I am and to have played as many games as I have as a starter, I had to do things on the other end to keep me confident,” the 2007 first-round draft pick said. “Being a pro, you understand things happen. I got my mind right.”

He also helped Miami (3-4) sweep the two regular-season games against the Jets (4-4) in the teams’ second meeting in 20 days.

“We’re responsible for the loss,” said Jets special teams ace Wallace Wright(notes). “That killed us. If they didn’t run back those two kickoffs, it’s over.”

Maybe so, especially when the Jets’ defense shut down the Dolphins’ wildcat formation and held Miami to just 104 yards of total offense compared to New York’s 378.

“Sometimes things just don’t make sense,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said. “Statistically, this game isn’t going to look close.”

Miami’s second-ranked running attack rushed for just 52 yards, and Chad Henne(notes) was 12 of 21 for 112 yards and a late touchdown to Joey Haynos(notes).

“They’re a great team,” Jets linebacker Bart Scott(notes) said sarcastically. “They’ll probably contend for the Super Bowl.”

It was one more shot in a tense rivalry reignited by a big heap of trash talk from both sides. It was ramped up after Jets linebacker Calvin Pace(notes) called the Dolphins’ wildcat “nonsense” after Miami’s 31-27 win on Oct. 12. The bad feelings were evident even before the game, when the Jets’ Kerry Rhodes(notes) and a few Dolphins players got into a shoving match during warmups.

But, this time, the Dolphins had the final word on the field.

“When you have two teams that really hate each other, that’s going to be your best football,” Miami linebacker Joey Porter(notes) said. “I wish you could hate every team like you hate your rivals. They brought out our best football.”

And, just like the last time these teams met, the game came down to the wire.

Facing a fourth-and-13 following a sack by Randy Starks(notes) with just over a minute remaining, Mark Sanchez(notes) scrambled before firing an incomplete pass over Dustin Keller(notes) and Jerricho Cotchery(notes) in the end zone to seal the loss for the Jets.

“This stings, going into the bye with a loss like this,” said Sanchez, who was 20 for 35 for 265 yards and two touchdowns. “As a competitor and as an offense, we thought we were winning that game, no doubt.”

They had a chance, particularly after Keller’s pretty 16-yard diving touchdown catch made it 30-25 with 5:52 remaining. Sanchez connected with Wright for the 2-point conversion, but it was negated by an illegal shift. Sanchez’s next attempt missed.

After New York’s defense stopped Miami, the Jets had a shot to stun the Dolphins late. But Sanchez and the offense couldn’t come through in the end.

“We felt we were going to be able to go in and seal the deal,” Cotchery said. “Give them credit. They kept us out of the end zone.”

After Jay Feely(notes) kicked a 55-yard field goal to tie a career and team mark and give New York a 6-3 lead, Miami struck back immediately with Ginn’s 100-yard return.

Jason Taylor(notes) made it 17-6 with 7:32 left in the third quarter when he returned Shonn Greene’s(notes) fumble 48 yards for a touchdown.

After Sanchez scored from 1 yard on a pretty play-action fake, Ginn struck again with a 101-yard return that made it 24-13.

New York came right back on Braylon Edwards’(notes) one-handed 19-yard touchdown catch with 1:35 remaining in the quarter. The 2-point conversion failed, making it 24-19.

“I’ve never seen a third quarter like that,” Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said. “To win this football game and have a third quarter like that, my hat’s off to that group in the locker room.”

Notes: Ginn’s 101-yard return was second in team history to Mercury Morris’ 105-yarder in 1969 at Cincinnati. … After running for 300-plus yards in two straight games, the Jets were held to 127—including 102 by Thomas Jones(notes).

You guys enjoy getting the score run up by Billichick this weekend. Bring your vaseline. Better yet, leave it home like you did against NO.

5-11. Learn to like it. And is that guy on the side lines your coach or the bus driver?

Hey John L, your bi-planes seem to be the ones closer to crashing and burning to end up at 5-11, so shut YOUR yap, ya loser!! Yes, the Phins had barely over 100 yards total offense from the line of scrimage because they hardly had the ball with all those special teams TDs being scored so fast!! all you bi-planes have is fat mouths and a damba*s fat b*stard coach!! keep yappin and LOSING!!

First off, Dolphins simply got very lucky. So, the people who should shut their traps are their fans.
Jets outplayed you in virtually every aspect of this game.

Jets held you to just over 100 yrds total minus the returns and better yet, we blew up your little gimmick play all over the field.
Looked more like the stray cat than the wild cat.

Secondly, here's a prediction; now that Ryan and the Jets have given the rest of the league the blueprint on how to destroy your one and only trick, Dolphins will win maybe 2 more games this season. Take that to the bank.

    5-11, no playoffs in sight!

Why is Sparano incapable of throwing passes to Ronnie Brown out in the flat? Why is it that only Ricky Williams catches passes in the flat? You want to know why they can't dominate offensively day in and day out, it's because Ronnie Brown doesn't have enough chances to make plays out in the open.

Hey "Ge" t "off D"'s nuts, should I knit you a sweater or a blanket? Because it's gonna be a long cold hard winter for you and Fireman Fred. You know, watching your team find ways to lose and watching other teams in the playoffs would make the winter seem colder! I have two words for you and Fireman Fred: body heat.

Yeah......you like the thought of that, don't you? Whatchoo got back? Nothing, that's what!

Another lousy performance by the Jets and yes, I have thrown up yet again. First game the defense gave the game away on a silver platter, this time the special teams gave the game away in a similar fashion. Spectacular performance by Mark Sanchez but Jets lose another heartbreaker.

Mark M regarding post 278, the schedules are made the before the 2009 season kicks off. Ur @#$%ing about how they get the easiest schedules yet when they were made they are, on paper, tough schedules like i stated earlier. How the teams do this year as no bearing considering when the schedules are made the nfl cant look into the future and say which teams will be good. They go on the previous season and how good the teams were then. The teams the colts face were good last year so when the schedules were made it looked hard on paper you dumb @#$%. I hate talking to dumb @#$%in people who dont know anything.

im never one to look at the stats and say could have should have but its obvious. the jets did some good things and they will continue to do so. miami has offensive issues galore and i dont see a top side with them. how will it all play out, im thinking 2 teams on the outside looking in come playoff time, by this time next year i think you will see a jet team on the rise. did gloria estaban show up? i kinda dig her.

I'm NOT talking about who INDY has INDY played this year relative to how good they were LAST YEAR IDIOT?!?!?! I'm talking about the fact that I KNEW THE GIANTS WERE NO WHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS EVERONE ELSE THOUGHT three weeks ago when they were 5-0. Everyone else said that the NYG were the best team or 2nd best behind Denver. Do you know how much analytical skills it takes to look at an undefeated team and say that they are the BEST?? Apparently, zero. That's why I see that three weeks after I called it, now you don't see the NYG talked about as being the BEST. WHY, because they finally played a good team in NO and mid-level team in ARZ and even funnier a not that good of a team PHI and they got beat down by all three. Now the big whizzes that thought NYG was the best have turned their attention to Indy. WRONG AGAIN

The great thing that Brees has going for himself is the same thing Peyton has ALWAYS had going for himself. He gets to play at least half his games inside with perfect throwing conditions. Ask Pete Rose if that aided or hurt his chances of passes the great Ty Cobb because Rose played on a carpet that speed up ground balls that would have been outs on a natural surface. Not sure of the number of hits that it gave Rose, but I'm going to guess it was significant and aided him to be the GREAT hitter that we all (those of us that don't analyze data that is) believe him to have been.

For the loser Indy fan Jake with no clue. Only the 19th hardest schedule. Guess again, that would fall to New Orleans thus far with 19 Opponents Wins. Indy before yesterday faced teams with 11 total wins. Cleveland faced teams with 32 wins.

Indianapolis' Schedule (Going into Week 8)

    Jac (3 wins) HOME
    Mia (2 wins) AWAY
    Arz (4 wins) AWAY
    Sea (2 wins) HOME
    Ten (0 wins) AWAY
    BYE
    St. Louis (0 wins) AWAY

That's 11 wins against 26 losses. That's a .297 winning percentage. Have I done all the math for you? Class dismissed.

....To be totally objective, I am trying to rationalize the Dolphin's fans comments. C'mon people your team had a 104 yards total offense. I am a Jets fan and am not going to put down the Fins because let's face it the two teams are playing on about the same level. Those two games could have gone either way. Bottom line...Neither team makes the playoffs this year. Go Pats.
