Yuck: Rams beat Lions 17-10 in battle of bad teams

DETROIT (AP)—The St. Louis Rams beat the Detroit Lions in each phase to snap their 17-game losing streak.

Offense. Defense. Special teams. Coaching.

Steven Jackson’s 25-yard touchdown run with 1:38 left lifted the Rams to a 17-10 win Sunday over Detroit.

“As a rookie I said, ‘That was an ugly win,’ and I got chewed out,” Jackson said. “I understand in the National Football League, there’s no such thing as an ugly win.”

The Rams (1-7) avoided matching their worst start in franchise history and ended talk about joining Detroit as the only teams in NFL history to have 0-16 seasons.

Coach Steve Spagnuolo earned his first victory at any level.

“It’s special and I know I’ll remember it for a long time,” he said.

Fellow rookie head coach, Jim Schwartz, won’t be able to forget it.

The Lions (1-6) spent their bye week analyzing their season, searching for ways to fix their many problems.

They overlooked one tendency and it haunted them on a trick play when St. Louis lined up to kick a long field goal late in the first half.

Holder Donnie Jones(notes) took the snap, flipped it to kicker Josh Brown(notes), who threw a short pass to a wide-open Daniel Fells(notes) for a 36-yard TD pass that gave the Rams a 10-2 lead.

Brown wasn’t surprised how bad the Lions bit on it because they had two players on his left set up to push the pile.

“We had watched tape and they came every single time when they were set up that way,” Brown said. “It was ours for the taking.”

Schwartz said the Lions were too aggressive, but they knew Brown was within his range.

“We expected them to kick,” he said. “If we force a miss, we’ve got good field position to do something of our own.”

Detroit scored its only points on offense early in the fourth quarter when Matthew Stafford(notes) had a 4-yard run and 2-point conversion pass to tie the game. The Lions were credited with a safety when James Butler(notes) intercepted a pass in the end zone, returned it past the goal line then went back and was tackled.

“Don’t ask about that dumb play,” Butler said. “I knew it wasn’t going to hurt us. I just knew we were going to win because I have faith.”

St. Louis hadn’t won since beating Dallas on Oct. 19, 2008.

“I haven’t forgotten how it feels, it’s just been a long time,” Jackson said.

Detroit had the league’s first 0-16 season last season and St. Louis won just two games in 2008.

The Lions have won just two of their past 31 games dating to the midway point of 2007. The last team to have two victories in a 31-game stretch was the Houston Oilers during the 1982-84 seasons, according to STATS.

Since 2001, the Lions are 32-103 and their .237 winning percentage is the lowest by an NFL team during a nine-season span since World War II.

After Detroit ended its 19-game skid with a Week 3 win over Washington, center Dominic Raiola(notes) blew kisses to the crowd at Ford Field.

During the Lions’ latest loss, Raiola was screaming back at fans taunting Matthew Stafford.

“I understand their frustration, I’ve been here 8 1/2 years, and I know what they’ve been through,” Raiola said. “But if you say something to one of my teammates, I’m going to stand up for him. This isn’t all on him.”

Stafford played after missing two games with an injured right knee and getting an extra week to rest during Detroit’s bye. The No. 1 pick in the draft didn’t have much to work with, missing standout receiver Calvin Johnson(notes) (right knee) and having teammates drop several passes. It took three-plus quarters for a wide receiver to catch a pass and Bryant Johnson’s(notes) drought-ending reception set up Stafford’s game-tying run.

Stafford was 14 of 33 for 168 yards with an interception.

As expected, the lowly teams showed how bad they are with an assortment of mental and physical mistakes.

Jackson, though, ran for a season-high 149 yards on 22 carries and his go-ahead TD was St. Louis’ first rushing score of the season.

“It couldn’t happen to a better guy,” Fells said. “Steven is the rock of this team. We all look up to him.”

^NOTES: Marc Bulger(notes) was 17 of 35—getting numerous passes batted down at the line—for 176 yards and an interception into the arms of defensive end Dewayne White(notes). … Detroit’s Kevin Smith(notes), slowed by a shoulder injury, had 45 yards rushing. … Rams TE Randy McMichael(notes) (bruised rib), OG Jacob Bell(notes) (head) and WR/KR Danny Amendola(notes) (head) were injured during the game. … The crowd of 40,857 was the smallest to a Lions home game in two decades.

Kyle, you miss Don's biggest point. Those qb's wouldn't win in Detroit either because there is NO LINE! There hasn't been a good line there in all the years I've watched (since mid-60's). The playoff year they did have in the early 90's, they played way over their heads after 1 of their own, Mike Utley, was paralyzed. By the following season, they were back to their regular form. You will not have much of a passing attack or running without a line to block. It really doesn't matter who the qb is at this point because their is no protection anyways. It would be better to keep Stafford off the field and safe until they get a line, but since they do not draft linemen, it's a moot point! Get a cheap, expendable qb and throw him in there as cannon fodder. He's a dead man behind the likes of Raiola, Backus and company!

to Don S, you cant make a money comparison to Stafford, he a Rookie, it takes time to develop, no one expected him to come in and Dominate like Brady, Eli, Peyton, or Ben like you stated. That is just ignorance, and the only reason Ben was so good his rookie season was because Pit was already dominate.

All I can say is catch the ball, Catch the ball , Catch the ball. People talk about stafford what about pettygrew the guy is just bad he drops passes and get called for offsides, or is called for holding and he is being payed big money , he needs to pull his head out of his a$$, Then you have the Johnson boy's one who can't catch a ball that hits him in the chest the other everyone calls one of the best in the game today is hurt all the time. Calvin needs to play up to and above his hipe. How about Kevin Jones boy did he show us how bad he wants to be a better back and carry the load what a load that is. The Lions need to keep looking please keep looking maybe there is someone out there who can come in and prove that they want to play and are going to play hard.

lol there's Detroit's $45,000,000 QB! hahaha Roethlisberger, Manning brothers, Brady etc, all have STATS and Superbowl Rings to ....get this...are you ready?...EARN the big money! Tired of these lame white bread QBs waltzing out of college or ANY position really, landing huge contracts without proving themselves. WIN some games, get in the playoffs, win a SUPERBOWL, then yeah ask for the money. The Lions organization is sooo pathetic, I don't think any of the QB mentioned above could do anything with that team.

the ONLY team to sell out Ford Field this season so far were the Pittsburgh Steelers! lol Ooh wait I think the home opener some local business bought out the remainder of tickets!

I'm thinking about buying tickets to the Browns game in a few weeks to watch THEM hand the Lion's asses to them! hahahaha

I find it comical that 40,000 fans showed up for that debacle !!....You forked over your hard earned cash to watch that crap ???.....you people must be gluttons for punishment !! I myself,.....won't spend a dime on that team, until they decide to put something out there on the field that resembles a NFL team !! I hope EVERY home game is blacked out,..even Thanksgiving Day,.....and if it was up to me,....EVEN the away games !!.....they don't deserve to be on TV at all !!.........and this is coming from a Lions fan for over 50 years !!,....I'm just plain fed up with this organization !...PERIOD !

Oh how I love Sunday..........watching my favorite high school team the Detroit Lions. I wonder if any of these guys will have a pro career some day......ummmmm........seriously though we lost to the the Rams........probably the worst team in the league(maybe not now).......
Every year I find myself at the beginning of the season defending the Lions against all the people that bash them.........you know I give up....what is the point? Are things ever going to change?
I will say this though I don't think Stafford played that bad yesterday......but when you have recievers that couldn't catch the swine flu if it was shoved in their face......well come on they looked like crap.....my chocolate lab catches the ball better than some of those guys..........
Anyway to sum it up I think I have given up on the Lions........I just can't take this mental abuse anymore......

2 weeks to prepare for an 0-7 team,...and this is the kind of performance you handed us ???.....This team is not progressing,......they are REGRESSING !!!....they don't look any better than they did last year,...maybe worse,..considering all the new players and coaches we have. For all my fellow Lions fans that STILL think there is hope,..and STILL see a light at the end of the tunnel,.....send me some of that crap your smoking, or popping, or shooting up!!...and shame on you Lions fans that STILL go to the games, and buy their garb !! ...I AM and will ALWAYS be a Lions fan,....but I refuse to support them in any way, until they put something out there that resembles a NFL team !! 40,000 people yesterday ?....maybe if 15 - 20,000 people show up,...the Ford's will get a hint !!

My prediction is that both the Rams and Lions do NOT win another game the rest of the year.

Now since Tennessee won, I am hoping Tampa Bay goes 0 and 16.

Its bad when a rookie, James Laurainitus, leads the team in tackles. He is good, but a rookie should not be laeding the team.

    # 49. You live in Michigan. Not matter what happens, its gonna suck. Like Ohio State getting ready to rip you a new one AGAIN later this year.

The Detroit Lions O-Line are @#$% donut farmers! Are they sponsored by Dunkin Donuts? Seems that way.. seeing as they have more holes in their line than a tray of freshly baked donuts! I think i'm gonna start watching the CFL instead of the Lions.
