Texans solve turnovers to beat Bills, 31-10

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP)—If Texans running back Steve Slaton’s(notes) latest turnover means he’s fumbled away his starting job in Houston, Ryan Moats(notes) is certainly ready to step in.

In a game the Texans lost star tight end Owen Daniels(notes) to what’s feared to be a severe knee injury, Slaton was sent to the bench after losing his fifth fumble of the season. But Moats took control, becoming the first player in franchise history to score three touchdowns in one game in a 31-10 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

“I wasn’t thinking about that,” Moats said, referring to setting personal and team records. “I was thinking about the time that I would get and try to do the best that I could.”

Thanks to Moats, a six-year career backup, the Texans (5-3) won their third straight, second in a row on the road, and are off to the best start in team history.

Moats finished with 126 yards rushing and another 25 yards receiving, and more important, went without a turnover in scoring touchdowns on three straight fourth-quarter possessions.

He got in the game after Slaton lost a fumble on the Texans’ third drive as part of a three-turnover first half.

Coach Gary Kubiak wouldn’t say whether Slaton lost his job, and was more concerned about Daniels, who didn’t return after hurting his right knee. Kubiak said “It doesn’t look good.”

Walking on crutches, Daniels acknowledged he’s afraid the injury could be season ending.

What also mattered to Kubiak was how his young team bounced back.

“Through adversity, teams get stronger or they can go the other way,” Kubiak said. “This tells you about the character of the group. They didn’t make excuses.”

Who needs excuses when the Texans took advantage of another offensively inept performance by the Bills (3-5), who produced a meager 204 yards offense and nine first downs, three in the second half?

“I think we have to take it personal,” said Terrell Owens(notes), who had five catches for 39 yards, and scored on a 29-yard run. “We’re just not getting it done offensively. That’s pretty much the key thing. … Everyone’s not pleased with the way we played.”

The Bills enter their bye week much like they began the season, attempting to address an offense that’s faltered behind an inexperienced line and is getting no consistency at quarterback. Ryan Fitzpatrick(notes), making his second start in place of Trent Edwards(notes) (concussion), went 15 of 23 for 117 yards and two interceptions.

The offensive struggles spoiled a solid first-half performance by a defense led by rookie safety Jairus Byrd’s(notes) two interceptions. The second-round pick out of Oregon became the first player since San Francisco’s Dave Baker in 1960 to have two or more interceptions in three straight games.

“We have to take advantage of every opportunity that we get, and we’re not doing that,” Bills running back Fred Jackson(notes) said. “Something has to change because as an offensive unit, we’ve got to do better.”

Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans(notes) joked about how simple it was to contain Buffalo’s popgun attack.

“It was easy,” Ryans said. “They kind of had the same formations, they didn’t give us a lot of motions and things. So it was a simple offense to go against.”

Ryans then joked about how good it was sipping Gatorade on the sideline watching the offense take over.

After settling for Kris Brown’s(notes) three field goals, including a 42-yarder, to cut Buffalo’s lead to 10-9 midway through the third quarter, the Texans took control to start the fourth.

Houston went ahead 17-10 in the first minute of the period when Moats scored on an 11-yard run to cap a 10-play, 72-yard drive. Quarterback Matt Schaub(notes) then hit Andre Johnson(notes) for a 2-point conversion.

The Texans scored on their next possession after they weren’t fooled by the Bills’ fake punt on a fourth-and-2 at the Buffalo 40. Moats scored on a 1-yard plunge and then scored again on a 3-yard run with 3:34 left.

Slaton tried to keep things in perspective.

“It’s definitely frustrating,” said Slaton, who had the ball punched out of his hand following a 7-yard reception. “You always want to be out there and help your team win. But I mean, my team needed me to support. So I gave 100 percent support.”

Notes: Bills DE Aaron Schobel(notes) did not return after hurting his groin, while RT Jamon Meredith(notes) did not return after spraining his right knee. Both were hurt in the first half. … Schaub went 25 of 34 for 268 yards and two interceptions in helping the Texans gain 439 yards. It was the fourth 400-yard game for the Texans this season to match a franchise best set last year. … Byrd, who left the game after hurting his groin late in the fourth quarter, has interceptions in four straight games to give him seven on the season.

Wow Jon, aren't you being a little harsh? I don't see anything wrong with what he said, and nobody should ever be 'fired' for something so insignificant.

Did anyone else see this.. Quote from Houston Chronicle

"“For us to be 5-3 is huge, especially for me,” cornerback Dunta Robinson said. “I’ve been here through some of the worst times you could possibly have as a professional football player. "

If that is an accurate word for word quote, Houston needs to DUMP Dunta Robinson. Fast.

Especially For Me ??? Wow, how selfish.

I’ve been here through some of the worst times. Not just you dude...

Box Score shows Bills at 3-6 and Texans at 6-3. Its week 8, not week 9. Bills are 3-5, Texans 5-3. I appreciate the extra win, though.

Looked like a trap game at the start for the Texans, but the better team prevailed. Also a great follow up story on Ryan Moats after all of what went on with that Plano cop this summer.

Jairus Byrd had 2 interceptions. Other than that, Buffalo's defense has not been able to stop anybody. The offense needs to put some points on the scoreboard.

Vincent, you're right Byrd has been the one bright spot for the Bills this year. However, there's no reason to scapegoat anybody. The entire offense is broken, and needs an overhaul.

Texans are pretty good, sucks to see the TE go down like that.

Good win today. Winning without Owen Daniels is a good sign. I love how Schaub spreads the ball around. You keep everyone in the game and not only does it confuse the defense, you keep the confidence up of all your recievers. And good job with Moats today. That's why backups need to practice just as hard as starters. You never know when your number will be called.

Even though we ran well, I still think our OL is not very good. They're quick, but they lack power. Indy is going to be a good test to see if it was just a bad Bills DL or they are improving for real. And still not really a whole lot of pressure against the QB from our defense. We should have done better against a Bills OL that was banged up.

We need to seriously work on discipline. Still too many stupid penalties.

As far as Buffalo goes, two things.

    1. Damn Byrd is a beast. You guys got a helluva player there. Great job drafting him.

    2. You guys should be all over the radio letting TO have it. The one pick Houston got where Fitz and TO had a little communication problem and our guy Reeves picked it off with no one even near him...did anyone else see what TO did? Instead of charging down the field to try and tackle Reeves like he should have, he stopped. Stopped dead. And SLOWLY turned to look back at Fitz and make sort of "What the hell was that?" motion. When you're an offensive player and you see the other team make an interception, you go after the guy and try to minimize the damage, if not try and punch the ball out. You sure as hell don't stand there. Shame on you TO. As a Houston fan, I'm glad you did that. As a football lover, that was plain spoiled Diva moment. Play for the camera on your reality show, not on the football field.

Yeah, all you Bills fans can go back to eatin your wings or whatever you guys do up there. Was there ever any doubt about this game? I mean Schaub throws two picks and Daniels and Slaton don't play most of the game and we pretty much stomped you guys on your own turf. I think a lot of people underestimate the Texans because they still think of us an upstart expansion team. The real test will be next, though. We can get it done but we can't play sloppy like they did today and expect to win against the Colts. Anyway, 31-10, suck it!

Sorry my memories of Houston and Buffalo football remind me of the Houston Oilers' meltdown against a Buffalo team who lost their QB, Jim Kelly and had a QB Frank Reich or something like that bring his team back from 31-3 in the second half to beat the hapless Oilers. I know the teams are different but the nightmares remain the same when it comes to these two cities. Sorry Buffalo!!

I'm glad Bills lost...I want a high draft choice and no reason for Old ass Wilson to bring back D J again. Even if we made the playoffs we arent in those type teams league. Offense is like a pee wee league offense. Run defense is almost as big of a joke as offense. Why can't the Bills stop the F...ing run????

Ha... sorry Bills fans. What happened to the 19-0 prediction? Not only that the Texans spotted the Bills 3 turnovers. I guess they wanted to make it a "fair" game. Alas, talent wins out. 31-10... after 3 turnovers and settling for field goals instead of TDs. Be glad it was only 31-10 and not worse. Now, if only the Texans would play a complete game and stop toying with sucky teams like the Bills. Then, they'd be a top 10 team.

Now if we can just get Jairus Byrd to intercept more we might have a chance. Can't this guy intercept like FOUR passes a game and score once in awhile. Oh and make like a dozen tackles while your at it. We need more sacks too, Jairus, are you up to it?

The offense is all but non-existent. We only have Byrd!
