A Jackson jig: Eagles roll, beat Redskins 27-17

LANDOVER, Md. (AP)—DeSean Jackson(notes) scored on a 67-yard run and a 57-yard reception, both in the first half. His night might have been perfect if his tender right ankle hadn’t messed up his touchdown tap dance.

“I was out there having fun, man, honestly,” Jackson said. “My ankle was kind of hurting. I really didn’t feel it, but it did kind of affect my dance a little bit. I could put it to perfection a little bit better than that.”

The Philadelphia Eagles had reason to do the soft shoe Monday night as they rebounded from an embarrassing loss and dispatched the Washington Redskins 27-17. Three turnovers were converted into points as the visitors raced to a 20-point lead in a game that was as lopsided as expected.

Donovan McNabb(notes) completed 15 of 25 passes for 156 yards, getting his 200th touchdown pass and surpassing 30,000 yards passing for his career. The defense sacked Jason Campbell(notes) six times, and newcomer Will Witherspoon(notes) ran back an interception for a touchdown and created another turnover—even though he’s been with the team less than a week.

Nearly all the scoring came in the first half of an injury-filled game as the Eagles (4-2) regained their stride after last week’s jarring loss to the Oakland Raiders. The scariest moment for Philadelphia came when Brian Westbrook(notes) left in the first quarter with a concussion. Coach Andy Reid said he expects Westbrook to recover fully but wasn’t certain whether his star running back will play next week.

The news was bad all around for the Redskins (2-5), who got no discernible boost from Sherm Lewis’ debut as a play caller and lost Pro Bowl tight end Chris Cooley(notes) to a broken right ankle. The offensive line is already a mess without Chris Samuels(notes) and Randy Thomas(notes), and the team still hasn’t scored more than 17 points in a game this season.

“You can say but so much,” defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth(notes) said. “You’ve got to actually want to. So once we get to that point—where we want to do something—then we’ll do something. But if we just keep going our separate ways, then we’ll just keep getting slaughtered like we have.”

Jackson scored on the fourth play from scrimmage, scampering on a reverse down the left sideline untouched almost all the way thanks in part to downfield blocking from Jeremy Maclin(notes). It was the longest Philadelphia run of the season by far—the team’s previous best was 25 yards.

Jackson got his second score when he put a double move on Carlos Rogers(notes) and got wide open down the left side, turning a third-and-22 at the Philadelphia 43 into six points in the final two minutes of the first half.

Jackson also had a 29-yard punt return and played the second half with a right foot injury that required X-rays at halftime.

“He’s wicked fast,” Redskins coach Jim Zorn said.

Witherspoon, acquired in a trade with the St. Louis Rams on Tuesday, started at middle linebacker because of Omar Gaither’s(notes) season-ending foot injury. The new guy returned an interception 9 yards for a touchdown and knocked the ball away from Campbell for a fumble that set up a field goal. Safety Quintin Mikell(notes) helped with both turnovers, blitzing to tip the pass that Witherspoon picked off, and recovering the fumble after Campbell was stripped.

“You can’t expect to get a sack, cause a fumble, turnover, interception for touchdown—whatever,” Witherspoon said. “It’s like, ‘What? Who in their right mind would think that in their first game?’ But when it comes down to it, it happened.”

Westbrook was hurt when his helmet collided with linebacker London Fletcher’s(notes) right knee at the end of a 5-yard run. The running back remained on the ground for several minutes before he was helped up and led off the field directly to the locker room.

“It looked bad,” Mikell said. “Anytime a guy is just out like that and not responding, you don’t know what’s going on. We were praying.”

Offensive consultant Lewis has been with the Redskins for only three weeks after being lured out of a retirement consisting of bingo-calling and serving Meals on Wheels—and his first try at calling the plays proved as unsuccessful as when Zorn was handling the task.

Zorn was stripped of the duty by the front office after last week’s loss to Kansas City, causing so much consternation that the front office then felt the need to announce that Zorn won’t be fired anytime soon.

It made no difference. The makeshift offensive line again failed to protect Campbell or create room for Clinton Portis(notes), who rushed for only 43 yards and at one point chucked his helmet on the sideline in frustration.

“Well, the result was the same. We got 17 points,” Zorn said. “It was difficult for me. It was difficult to stand and watch. The hard part is to keep your mouth shut.”

Campbell finished 29 for 43 for 284 yards and two touchdowns. He threw his seventh interception of the season, one more than he had all last season. Washington trailed 27-10 at halftime, and Campbell’s consolation touchdown pass to Fred Davis(notes) in the final two minutes was the only score of the second half.

“You have to take the bitter with the sweet,” running back Rock Cartwright(notes) said. “And right now we’re at a bitter moment.”

NOTES: Former Redskins kick returner Brian Mitchell was inducted into the stadium’s ring of fame before the game. When he thanked owner Dan Snyder during his speech, fans began to boo. “No, don’t do that,” he said. … The Eagles ran the wildcat formation a few times, and Michael Vick(notes) also got a handful of plays at quarterback. He completed his only pass for 5 yards and ran three times for 9 yards.

Hehehe, the deadskins will continue to suffer as long as Dan Snyder still owns the team. The team has gone downhill ever since Snyder cut Brad Johnson in favor of his unhealthy hard-on for Jeff George's hard throws.

Yes the redskins have their problems, but they had drives down the field and had chances to win the game if it was not for Jackson making those big plays. The ones I see have a bigger problem are the eagles who could not sustain a drive down the field all night long. We have a quarterback that can not hit open recievers without any pressure by the redskins. Yes the redskins have fallen into hard times, but at least they can controll the ball down field. I can hardly wait to see what reids excuses will be sunday if we lose to the giants. RUN THE BALL!!!!!

Our Eagles O-line must get better. If we are to have any chance, with the way that Coach Reid throws the football, and very little rushing plays that we call, Donovan; HAS TO HAVE TIME to wait for the receivers to come open. When he has the time, he usally can find someone. I was disappointed with the kind of pressure Donovan was getting from the Redskins!! Our O-line HAS to get TOUGH, and NASTY, if we are going to compete in the playoffs, we are coming closer to the halfway point of the season, and we will be facing playoff clubs, with good pass rushers, starting with the Giants. We cannot let Donovan get hurt, because those of you who believe that Kolb is ready, you will see that he is not ready. Kolb is not ready to face the playoff clubs, that's who we have to beat, to gain some ground in our division, and in the NFL!!

Here's to the O-line getting BETTER and SOON!!! Go EAGLES!!!

You guys amaze me on how you can start on one subject, and then go to another, and another, and yet another. The redskins lost. Zorn sucks as a coach. Campbell sucks as a QB. Hire shannan, Put in someone else, he can't much worse. And find someone who can call some good offensive plays for once.

I agree with kkyn and I'm a guy! Born and raised in the Philadelphia / New Jersey region, I can root only for the Eagles! New York teams are bullsh*t, so much money, so much HYPE and no F**king results, AS USUAL!!!! I hear a lot of hating on McNabb and oftentimes he's been vilified with no thought of how he was usually the best player on the team for a long time. The truth is McNabb has taken the Eagles from also-rans to five (5) NFC Championship games in the 21st! Where have the vaunted 'cowboys' been in that time? The forty-niners? Peyton Manning, Tom Brady even Curt Warner and Rothelisberger had great help (in the form of supporting TALENTED teammates) surrounding them. McNabb really hasn't had that kind of help, until recently. Question; where has Curt Warner been all this time until Arizona got serious about building a focused, talented team of winners??? They beat the fabulous GIANTS on Sunday, didn't they? The same Cardinals and Eagles split last season....hmmmm!!!

Big deal. it was the REDSKINS. They are losers. Let's see Philly beat a quality opponent. They lost to the only quality team they played... and to the Raiders.

They will lose their next 4 games, beat the redskins again, then lose the last 5. So that will put them at 6 and 10. I think that's about right.

LOL You guys are such losers! All you do is talk crap on the Eagles, how many of your teams are doing well??? Huh Huh?? It cracks me up the way you losers all come down on the Eagles. Yes we did lose to the Raiders but did any of you nitwits see the Chargers struggle with the Raiders?? NO right? Because the Eagles had a bad game they are the worst team to ever exist in the NFL because they lost to the Raiders! Dallas and the Chiefs, forgot that one?? How about the Superbowl Champs, Steelers who struggled against the Lions?? You see you idiots, when you see a bad team sometimes you go in thinking it's in the bag and end up being too confident, I think the Steelers did this as did the Eagles. I mean it is laughable how you all talk about McNabb when most of the teams you douchbags like have bad QB's. Do you think Tony Romo is better then McNabb? That boy couldn't even hold onto the bowl after a snap to win in the playoffs, lol! He hasn't done a single thing except date hollywood starlets! The fact is McNabb is one of the best QB's in the NFC and though I think he has problems under pressure I would take him any day over Romo, Ryan, Delhome, etc. Now talk the AFC and that is a different story. Spare me the Peyton Manning bull, that man can't produce under pressure either. Ever see the championship with the Steelers back in 05 when they completely destroyed that man???? He is a pocket player and that is it just like Brady, pressure him and he crumbles. So you talk about McNabb??? I personally think the best QB under pressure is Ben Rothlisberger, he is always cool and actually produces better when there is more pressure on him. So lets see you losers, what teams do all of you like?? Or are you just all haters cause your teams suck and always have?? All talk huh! As for Vick, someone asked what the opinion of an Eagles fan is, I have no clue why he is here. He has done nothing. I think he's worthless!

And FYI I am a girl, a tremendous football fan, not just an Eagles fan but a football fan. But you idiots talk the talk but can't walk the walk!!

Sherm did a much better job of play calling than Zorn. The mistakes were on the field guys not performing, penalties stuff like that but no suicidal call that make you lose. 17 points against the Eagles is like 30 against the Chiefs or Rams.

This is a honest question for the Eagle fans, just let me know,Why and who the hell cares about m.Vick being on this team,You want to talk about Romo being overated,Check this guys career stats his career passer rating is 75.6,his best season he threw 20 TDs and 13 picks, and people talk about him being great,HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA,Now I do like McNabb as a player he is the only player on the Eagles that scares me when Dallas and The Eagles play,You see he is no different than Romo or any other QB give him time in the pockett and he will do great, but put pressure on them and they are like most QBs average,Yea Im a Cowboy fan,But i cant figure this M.Vick thing out,Just looking for a fans point of view

I used to think that the owner knew something about football but I guess I was really wrong. To allow Jason to continue to start for the Redskins shows that he don't care about the Redskin fans who fill his stadium. Time to sell the team to someone that cares. To allow a QB to contunue to play after getting one offesive score in six games is unbeliveable and these were teams that haven't one one game until they played the sknis. Looking at maybe one more win if he continue to start and that's pushing it. Please let one of the other QB's to start and get some experience. You blew this season what good is it to try and keep Cambell starting with the thought that maybe next year.

Ok people...some of you got it partly right...here is how I see it:
1- Campbell could have avoided his turnovers had he been more "aware" of the rush and had quicker feet, release and decision making...cant teach that.
2- Randle el is useless..ie, fair catches are his specialty except when the ball bounces of his head and he avoids getting hit at every chance by diving under tacklers..he needs to go.
3- Fred Davis it appears can catch AND run but cant block...soooo, use him in a scheme which doesnt have him blocking or even in the slot instead of Randel hell.
4- The play calling was noticably better if only the PLAYERS could perform the tasks. Hence the need for a GM to select players and coaches who can teach players to be disciplined and motivated.
5- Clinton Portis doesnt run he dances and falls like a domino except when he gets a head of steam and initiates contact which is rare since he cant seem to run with power more than a few times a game....he needs to go before his trade value diminishes to zero.

Last point- Imagine if ten years ago..hell even five..the front office had drafted only offensive and defensive linemen in the first round...imagine this for a minute...then started to add players in support roles such as QB, RB,WR,TE...etc...in other words if they had built this team the way you build a house with the FOUNDATION FIRST and then frame, walls, wiring and only...ONLY at the end finish it with the fancy appliances(free agents) this would be a team like..oh...the Patriots or even the Broncos...who saw that coming...hell..look at the Cardinals...ok...that is how I see it from a 38 year Skins fan...now I have to snap back to reality and end the dream.....HAIL to the DEADSKINS(unless this plan is adopted)
