Byrd helps Bills beat mistake-prone Panthers 20-9

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—A quick peek of the box score and you’d think it was impossible the Buffalo Bills won. They were outgained almost 3-to-1, had only nine first downs and had a nearly 10-minute deficit in time of possession.

Then you see the stat that decided the game and defined Jake Delhomme’s(notes) miserable season with Carolina: turnovers.

Delhomme was picked off three more times, and the Panthers committed four turnovers to Buffalo’s none Sunday, allowing for the suddenly surging Bills’ bizarre 20-9 win in Ryan Fitzpatrick’s(notes) debut as starting quarterback.

“You can’t really complain about a win,” Bills receiver Terrell Owens(notes) said after another quiet day. “Defensively, those guys are keeping us in ballgames.”

Buffalo (3-4) won its second straight despite being outgained 425-167 by getting two more interceptions from Jairus Byrd(notes) that set up touchdowns. The Bills recovered Kenny Moore’s fumbled punt late in the fourth quarter and watched John Kasay(notes) miss two field goals for Carolina (2-4).

Delhomme’s interception total has reached an NFL-high 13—with only four touchdowns—and coach John Fox said he’d “evaluate” whether Delhomme keeps his job. Delhomme badly overthrew two passes that led to 14 Buffalo points, and hedged when asked if he should remain the starter ahead of Matt Moore(notes) or A.J. Feeley(notes).

“In my heart, yeah, but I mean let’s be honest, I don’t think I’m a dummy,” said Delhomme, whose passer rating is 56.5. “When you’re not playing well offensively, you always have to look at the quarterback.”

Fitzpatrick was hardly spectacular, but he avoided the big mistakes that have doomed Delhomme. Replacing Trent Edwards(notes) following his concussion last week, Fitzpatrick was 11 of 22 for 123 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.

“He made the plays when we had to make them,” said coach Dick Jauron, who has led the Bills to two stirring wins in a row to take some pressure off himself.

Just like the overtime win over the Jets, the Bills won ugly thanks to their surprising rookie safety.

Byrd, a second-round pick from Oregon, now has five interceptions in three games. The second one Sunday, coming after Carolina’s Steve Smith deflected Delhomme’s overthrown pass, was returned to the Buffalo 27. Fitzpatrick then split two defenders to find Lee Evans(notes) for a 2-yard TD and a 14-2 lead early in the fourth quarter.

At that point, the Bills were being outgained 333-95.

Byrd had an easy interception of a badly overthrown ball in the first quarter and returned it to the Carolina 7. Two plays later, Marshawn Lynch(notes) was barely touched on a 7-yard run for a 7-0 lead.

“I can’t remember a streak like this,” Byrd said.

Carolina got within 17-9 after Delhomme found Smith for 48 yards on fourth down, then DeAngelo Williams(notes) scrambled 15 yards for a TD on another fourth down.

The Panthers got the ball back with more than 5 minutes left, but Moore— who had replaced the injured Captain Munnerlyn(notes)—fumbled the punt return. Derek Fine(notes) recovered for Buffalo at the 20, redemption for a Bills team that has lost two games with the help of special teams miscues

The defense kept Carolina in it, getting its second safety in three games when Hollis Thomas(notes) led a swarm of players to tackle Fred Jackson(notes) in the end zone to make it 7-2 at halftime.

The Panthers, without linebacker Thomas Davis(notes) (knee), also harassed Fitzpatrick, who badly underthrew Owens on what would’ve been a touchdown. Owens was held to three catches for 27 yards, but it didn’t matter because the Panthers kept self-destructing.

After Kasay missed from 43 and 39 yards, coach John Fox decided to go for it on fourth-and-1 from the Buffalo 13 early in the third quarter, but Paul Posluszny(notes) stuffed Jonathan Stewart(notes) for a 2-yard loss.

Buffalo entered with the NFL’s worst rushing defense, were without both starting safeties because of injury, and lost starting defensive tackle Kyle Williams (knee) early in the first quarter.

Yet Buffalo has won two road games in consecutive weeks for the first time since 2004.

“Never once on the sidelines was there any doubt that we were going to win the game,” Bills defensive end Chris Kelsay(notes) said. “Regardless if it’s an ugly win over not, it’s hard to win in this league.”

NOTES: Evans had five catches for 75 yards to go over 5,000 yards in his career. … After being held to one catch last week, Smith had six catches for 99 yards. Smith was emotional after the game as he mourns the death of Robert Taylor, his coach at Santa Monica College. … Panthers TE Dante Rosario(notes) (knee) and S Charles Godfrey(notes) (ankle) left the game. … Bills FB Corey McIntyre(notes) hurt his ankle.

That doesn't surprise me one bit. Carolina fans are probably the worst in the country when it comes to professional sports. It really is an embarrassment.

I was at the game and was shocked at the amount of Bills fans at Bank of America stadium. As a die hard Bills fan I almost felt sorry for the Panthers due to their overwhelming lack of fan support. At home. Felt good to be a Bills fan that night, especially being surrounded by Bills fans on the Panthers side of the stadium. The Panthers had maybe one loud fan in three sections around my section. Unbelievable that the Panthers had the same record as the Bills going into the game and had less fans in their home territory. Panthers fans, get it together! Buffalo's record sucks too but we came out and supported our team, y'all should too! Go Bills!

ok blame jake, this time i admit, he deserves it. BUT he had lots and lots of help with this one. kasey misses two sure fire goals, fumbles on the kick off. drops, stupid play callng in the red zone. man, some played hard just to lose by others who played like they didn't even belong in pro games. seasons gone now. but always for some unkown reason in the nfc south, the top team one year goes to the bottom the next year. i'm still pulling for them but its very difficult.

Why can't a win be a win? Who cares how they got it? The best thing about Sunday was that the DOLPHINS STILL SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wildcat, my a.., put together a team that does not need gimmicks to win. Their quarterback sucks, a pot head as a running back, a has been as a general manager, a coach that hasn't a clue, another has been at DE, and the list goes on and on......

Ive been saying ever since the horriable post season loss to seattle that jake needs to go. I blame John Fox for trading our 1st round picks back to back years so even if we have a losing season we cant get a high pick until the 2nd round, and how many teams will be looking for quarter backs in 2010 ( Tampa, Okland, Jacksonvile, washington, sanfransico, maybe the vikings after this year when maybe brett is done) but being said teams in the first round will take the high profiled and talented quarterbacks in the first round and leave us with not much in the 2nd round and so on. Fox has repaired this team in many areas, so I dont think he will go nor his coaching staff cause several years hes had his team almost leading the nfl in rushing yards and had his defense in the top 15 at least, its just the quarter back really and the defensive line (losing kris jenkins, and probally peppers at the end of the year) All and all this season is done in my mind (too many good teams we face this year and were not gonna catch the saints). Please for the love of god start moore and give him a chance. Please draft a quaterback in the draft next year even if the good ones are gone (WE NEED ONE!!!!!!) Dont let the reality of (It is what it is.......) bring this team down further, and lets just hope for next year.

Go to Cleveland spend the money and get Brady Quinn . If you see 3-13 its time to get Coach Fox to clean out Coach Cowher's office,.

Kasey accepts the blame maybe its time to consider retirement. Did anyone ever accept the blame for that out of bounds kick off that set up the Patriots with excellent field position to win the Super Bowl?

I hate to keep coming to this page every monday morning complaining about the Carolina Panther's but, here I am once again doing it. 1. I said long before the season ever started the Panther's would win 4 games ths season. Well, I need to rephraise that now it looks as if they will win only 3. Because Buffalo was one of the teams they were suppose to beat. So it look's like a season record of 3-13 oh well what can we do when now it looks to me as if the whole team has taken the season off. I also said long before the season started to can Delhomme an John Foxx and the offensive co-ordinator and has that happened, NO and is that going to happen, NO I am afraid until that does happen you Pahtherless fans can stay in misery.I have quit making the long trek from Wilkes County to Charlotte every other Sunday when I can set home and watch them lose on Television. Reading some of these other comments some of you folks have made about the current state of the Panther's makes me think that you don't care whether they win or lose . Like you here oh they are just having a bad season or wait til the next game, well folks we are running out of games. We cannot live on past laurels we now have to live for now and I say now is lousy. and it will probably stay that way.

With all these defensive injuries when are we going to see Maybin play a little outside LB? Also, what about Nic Harris playing a little strong safety? This might help seal up our porous run defense. Byrd is awesome at free safety but Wilson is too easily pushed out of the way by blockers to be playing strong safety.Glad they got the win against Carolina, and if they weren't so injury depleted I wouldn't think about playing Maybin at LB or N. Harris at strong safety but there comes a time when you got to start thinking about it. Then, put in the faster lighter players during passing downs (and move Maybin to DE).

I am a Buffalo Bills fan. The defense has been giving up a lot of yards, but now they are getting a lot of turnovers. The turnovers help win the games. But the offense needs to put up more points. Just think. If Buffalo wins next week against Houston (and they have done well against Houston in the past), we will be 4 and 4 going into the bye week. Who would have thought. Let's Go Buffalo!

i will speak for jake: what??! no interceptions? did you not see my game against arizona.. then i tried to match that against philly.. common guys.. why u think i got that fat contract? they want me to throw interception.. smith told me to throw some.. he likes to play defense and hit people.. sometimes he like to break peoples jaws.. EVEN IN PRACTICE!!! m getting a tad bit agitated... i told fox to let me run some wild cat, since it doesn't matter if i get hurt, most of my body parts are from other people. he said no, it gives us a better chance to lose and get a top draft pick... o wait no we trades our 2010 draft pick to san fran for Everett brown.. WOW hes good.. me and him sit on the side lines sometimes and i get my qb advice from him.. we are a winning formula..

@Doc...our qb is averaging OVER 2 picks a game...I think he has a bit of a problem. We all know he is trying to force it to Steve Smith. Even today...all the deep balls that were complete and SHOULD have gone for touchdowns became tackles because the runners had to slow down to catch the ball. Jake is done...the fans have no confidence, the best player on the team (Smith) is losing confidence, and the defense played great behind him. What really cost us today was the muffed punt, but that happens and Moore will be okay...but you will NOT make the playoffs with 2 picks a game. It is ALL on Jake and the offensive coordinator. Predictable offense and no air execution. Huge Panthers fan but they should pack it in and play for a draft pick then trade back into the first round for a qb.
