Rodgers powers Packers past Browns 31-3

CLEVELAND (AP)—On Green Bay’s first offensive series, quarterback Aaron Rodgers(notes) got his helmet ripped off and punched in the face.

The Cleveland Browns hardly touched him again.

The Packers were the bullies.

“One of the linemen came over and said, ‘Who was it? We got your back,”’ Rodgers said. “That means a lot to me and that means a lot to our team.”

Rodgers threw three touchdown passes, Ryan Grant(notes) rushed for 148 yards and the Packers warmed up for Brett Favre’s(notes) first visit back to Lambeau Field next week with a 31-3 laugher Sunday over the Browns, who got over the flu but can’t shake other problems.

It would have been understandable if the Packers (4-2) had overlooked an inferior opponent with their eyes on Favre’s hyped return to Wisconsin with the Minnesota Vikings. But Rodgers and his teammates took care of business against the pathetic Browns (1-6), who have scored just four offensive touchdowns and 72 points all season.

Rodgers, who steps a little further out of Favre’s immense shadow with each win, spent the afternoon focused on the Browns—not Brett. So when did he allow himself to consider the rematch with the Vikings and No. 4, who beat the Packers 30-23 on Oct. 5 in Minneapolis?

“Just now,” Rodgers said with a smile.

He finished 15 of 20 for 246 yards and the three TDs—a 71-yarder to Donald Driver(notes) and 41-yarder to tight end/linebacker Spencer Havner(notes) in the first half, and a 5-yarder to James Jones(notes) to cap a 99-yard drive in the fourth quarter after the Packers defense stopped Cleveland at the 1.

Despite being without injured starting left tackle Chad Clifton(notes), Green Bay’s offensive line did not give up a sack after allowing a league-high 25 coming in and blow open huge holes for Grant. Rodgers’ white No. 12 jersey had no grass stains. He had plenty of time to throw and picked apart Cleveland’s secondary.

In the first quarter, Browns linebacker David Bowens(notes) had tried to rough up Rodgers by yanking off his helmet during a tackle.

Rodgers didn’t name Bowens, but said “96” when asked about the incident, which he called “kind of a dirty play.”

Bowens said he was just playing hard.

“I was just trying to grab anything I had,” he said. “It wasn’t malicious, I was just trying to get a stop. I apologized to him for it. He can call it what he wants to call it, but the refs didn’t call it. I’d treat him different if he was passing the ball, that’s different. But if he’s running the ball, he’s a running back. It’s called football.”

Right now, the Browns aren’t playing football.

They were outclassed again, dominated by the Packers, who outgained them 460-139 and seemed to know their every move.

Leading 7-3, Rodgers hooked up with Driver on a simple play the Packers practiced all week. Watching tape of Cleveland’s loss at Pittsburgh, they noticed the Browns blitzed their safety in certain packages. So when Rodgers saw Abram Elam(notes) coming, he threw to the open spot and hit Driver in stride. The Packers’ wide receiver shook off two tackling attempts by Wright and high-stepped into the end zone.

Rodgers said Packers linebacker Desmond Bishop(notes) did a better job in practice showing the defensive look that the Browns did in the game.

“We went long count and I was sitting there thinking, ‘I hope that guy comes because if he comes it’ll be a big play,”’ Rodgers said. “I threw it quick and he looked quick and the rest was Driver being Driver.”

Unlike Rodgers, Browns quarterback Derek Anderson(notes) was under duress for four quarters. He completed 12 of 29 passes for 99 yards—just 44 after the first quarter. The Browns had 1st-and-goal at the 1 the fourth, but failed to score on two running plays and two incompletions.

By game’s end, Browns Stadium was mostly empty and the only noise was coming from Green Bay fans chanting “Let’s go Pack.”

“We aren’t good right now,” Anderson said. “That’s it. Period. We haven’t executed. We haven’t done the right things to win ballgames. We haven’t run the ball effectively, thrown it where we needed to. We haven’t protected up front like we need to and caught it when we need to.”

Ending a tumultuous week with a lopsided loss was not what Browns coach Eric Mangini had in mind.

“It’s a very disappointing performance across the board,” Mangini said. “I don’t think we played very well. I don’t think we coached very well. I thought we were making progress in a lot of areas. I don’t think we showed that today—at all.”

NOTES: Packers TE Jermichael Finley(notes) injured his left knee after a catch in the first quarter and did not return. WR Brett Swain(notes) also sustained a knee injury. The team said both would undergo further tests Monday. … Cribbs (7,214) moved into 18th place in career return yards, passing Bruce Harper (7,191).

It's always good to get a win, but against some of these teams, it's hard to tell what it means. First of all, Packer fans who think life is bad in Titletown have seen three cities with teams where life is unimaginable. However, each time the Packers themselves have been fortunate to play a lesser team.

This was again true with Cleveland. Hey--let's eliminate those penalties! How bad is it when the kickoff draws a flag for being out of bounds (Did Crosby have a bet with someone that he could hit the pylon)? As mildly ironic as that moment was and as much as the coaching staff was "happy" with the "minimal, harmless" penalties, we know deep down that giving a team another set of downs with stupid infractions like twelve men on the field and stupid late hits that inch a team toward the red zone are going to be fatal mistakes against a better team (yes, the likes of the Vikings). On the field you can of course decline a penalty, but being in denial about penalties will keep costing this team.

It's hard to tell against the likes of Cleveland, but if this running game can actually get going, it could mean that the Packers could get Rodgers off the field near the end of the game. He didn't take the kind of beating that he had in previous weeks, but it came close at times. It was good to see that the coaching staff didn't leave him out there to take any needless shots once the game was in hand. Of course, the running game depends a lot on that 0-line or maybe some sheer willpower by Grant and others. I don't know what the magic number is in the NFL for pulling the starting quarterback, but if the Packers have at least a two touchdown lead in the fourth quarter, save Rodgers from any potential or further punishment by putting in Flynn and putting the ball in the hands of the running game. With Ahman Green back, let's learn how to excute a screen pass again. With a lead, all the Packers need to do is to keep the clock moving and on a third and distance situation, have Flynn dump a screen to Green.

Dave- You keep referring to me as a Vikings fan. Far from it. I really just dont like the packers at all and I like a couple of teams and certain players. But the Vikes are not my team. I guess I would be classified as a packer hater. That might be low class but its the truth. So when you see posts from me moving forward, its coming from a hater. But good luck to you guys this weekend. You are definitely going to need it!

why would packer fans come on here if they lose, there wouldnt be anything to talk about, unless they want to roll like the vikings fans who write about how awesome they where, yet lost, and have every excuse in the book for how they should win. so yea, packer fans like me wont be here if they lose, it would pretty much prove that the vikes are better so the discusion would be over till next year.

well duh charles!!! Thats how it always goes. Its either that or a bunch of reason why a team shoulda won. thats what all fans do. I bet I can find a post you wrote that has an excuse for the vikings loss, and I could find one from the week before when ravens fans had excuses and you probably said a W is a W and thats all that matters. Its in our nature, as fans, to do that. so deal with it ya dope.

The Vikings out-gained Pittsburgh by 127 yards, held the ball for nearly 37 minutes and forced the Steelers into 4-for-12 on third downs. Yet Minnesota still found a way to lose the game thanks to 11 penalties, two turnovers in the red zone that went for touchdowns and an inability to put the ball in the end zone from 1 yard out in the third quarter.
With a the best RB in the NFL, emerging stars in Rice-Harvin, future Hall of Fame QB, stud tight end Schiancoe(sp?), rapidly improving defense, solid special teams, solid backups, Look out NFL!!
    Love my Vikings!!!!!!
Be afraid Packers, be very, very afraid

Thank God I moved my kids far away from Cleveland. We thought we were still in Browns territory until we went to Wal mart on gameday and saw everyone wearing Steelers jerseys. I guess we are in Steelers country now. Browns, you are losing your fans if you don't start playing football.

And we weren't saying “Let’s go Pack.” We were yelling " GO PACK GO!" every cheesehead knows thats the packers chant.
and 161, i like to call him coach manGINA (man-jye-na) but womangini is nice too.

We'll give you the #2 and # 3 picks in the next draft for Brady Quinn:

    Signed,

    S.F. 49ers.

ps: We'll throw in Mike Singletary and Shaun Hill. Let Mike and Mangini flip a coin to see who coaches the Browns: the loser stays. And starts Hill.
