Panthers score final 18, edge Redskins 20-17

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP)—Jake Delhomme(notes) got up, his shoulder pads sticking out and his chin strap bunched around his mouth. He pumped both fists and yelled, letting out a month of frustration.

His eighth interception of the season earlier in the day? Forgotten. Carolina’s winless start was over, too.

Delhomme’s bold bootleg run for a first down on third-and-8 and an earlier disputed call helped the Panthers rally past the Redskins 20-17 on Sunday, a day of vindication for Delhomme and more trouble for embattled Washington coach Jim Zorn.

“Anything that could have gone wrong the first month or so has gone wrong,” Delhomme said. “We’ll take it any way we can get it.”

The Panthers (1-3) scored the game’s final 18 points, with Jonathan Stewart’s(notes) 8-yard run with 9:21 left the go-ahead touchdown after a bizarre fumbled punt gave the Panthers the ball at the Washington 12.

“You talk about a monkey on your back, this was a gorilla ,” coach John Fox said.

Delhomme, who entered with 15 turnovers in his last 15 quarters, suggested it was more like a colony of gorillas, perhaps the weight Zorn is feeling after the Redskins’ latest meltdown.

Leading 17-12, Washington (2-3) forced a punt with just over 10 minutes left. Carolina’s Quinton Teal(notes) blocked Washington’s Byron Westbrook(notes) into returner Antwaan Randle El(notes), which was ruled a legal play because Randle El had moved forward due to the short punt. The ball bounced off Westbrook’s foot and Carolina’s Dante Wesley(notes) pounced on the ball.

The officials initially awarded the ball to Washington. They then determined the ball hit Westbrook first and gave it to Carolina, a call upheld after Washington challenged.

“The Washington guy got blocked into his own man, so there was no interference,” referee Walt Coleman said.

Stewart’s TD two plays later gave Carolina its first lead. Delhomme then connected with Steve Smith on a 2-point conversion.

The Panthers’ improved defense, led by Thomas Davis(notes) and Julius Peppers(notes), then forced a punt. Facing third-and-8 from his 25 with 2 minutes left, Delhomme faked a handoff to Stewart and rolled right.

He lumbered to the corner and was met by DeAngelo Hall(notes). Delhomme stiff-armed him, dragging him for the extra yard and the first down.

“I figured he might have the ball so I sprinted out a yard too short,” Hall said.

It allowed Delhomme to pump his fist again before taking a knee and running out the clock. He completed 16 of 25 passes for 181 yards.

Delhomme still has only three TDs to go with eight INTs, but the Panthers feel the victory could jump-start a turnaround with games against struggling Tampa Bay and Buffalo the next two weeks.

The Redskins haven’t taken advantage of their weak schedule, falling to 10-11 under Zorn. Newly hired offensive consultant Sherman Lewis watched Washington build and then cough up a 17-2 lead thanks to two drives totaling 14 yards.

DeAngelo Williams(notes) fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and Albert Haynesworth(notes) recovered. Two plays later, Jason Campbell’s(notes) 10-yard pass to Clinton Portis(notes) made it 7-0.

Hall later intercepted Delhomme and raced 45 yards to the Carolina 1, and Portis’ 1-yard run was his first TD rushing this season.

Kenny Moore then returned the kickoff 55 yards, leading to Delhomme’s 17-yard pass to Jeff King(notes) to make it 17-9. This time King’s TD counted.

In the first half, Brad Hoover(notes) fumbled near the goal line and King recovered in the end zone. An obscure rule—enacted after Oakland intentionally fumbled the ball forward to win a game in 1978—doesn’t allow an offensive player other than the fumbler to recover in the end zone on fourth down, giving the Redskins the ball.

Three plays later, Portis was dumped in the end zone by Peppers and Davis for a safety, Carolina’s only first-half points.

It was the kind of sloppiness befitting two struggling teams.

The Redskins shook up their offensive line, giving Mike Williams the start at right guard in his first game since the 2005 season, and leaving Chad Rinehart(notes) inactive. Then left tackle Chris Samuels(notes) went down with a stinger in the first quarter and was replaced by D’Anthony Batiste(notes).

Campbell was sacked five times, including once by Peppers, three days after linebacker Jon Beason(notes) said in a radio interview that he was going to talk to Peppers about his lack of production.

“We lost to Detroit on the road. We come here and lose to Carolina,” said Campbell, who threw for 145 yards. “This one stings more.”

NOTES: Portis was held to 57 yards rushing and Williams to 40. … Panthers WR Muhsin Muhammad(notes) went over 11,000 yards receiving with a 9-yard grab in the first quarter. He ranks fifth among active NFL receivers. … Haynesworth was shaken up in the first half but later returned.

The Panthers defense might not be known for their superb tackling skills, but they sure are doing their job keeping the team in games. With the physicality that they've shown since game one, teams may beat us but will feel the pain I hope we knock Brett Favre's head off

It's painful to watch the Redskins offense. They are boring, anemic, lethargic, and predictable. They netted less than 200 yards yesterday! Surely the West coast offense can be more creative than this. Do you realize that they are less than a touchdown away from being winless. And what is it going to take to light a fire under Jim Zorn so he in turn will light a fire under his own players. It seems as though nothing phases him, and he is just going through the motions with every facet of his duties. Simply put, Jason Campbell is not starting quarterback material for the NFL. He is somebody that had a nice senior season at Auburn, but that was in large part to being the beneficiary of having two pro running backs (Williams and Brown) behind him. Seems like a nice guy, but just not the answer. Everything is not his fault, but he does deservedly bear a lot of the blame. This is just the beginning of a long list of problems for this organization, which unfortunately for Redskins fans like myself means another long year with no playoff hopes.

I have been a redskins fan for more years then i care to remember, it is hard to watch or listen to them anymore. I hear all the frustrations of all you fans. From what i've seen so far i will say this, put a fork in them because they are done for this year. I had hopes of maybe a playoff game this year, after looking at the schedule i told my brother they should be 6and 2 at the bye, boy was i wrong. Zorn dosen't know what kind of offense to run, campbell cannot run the west coast style because he has to wind up like a baseball pitcher to throw and zorn dosen't have the guts to bench him. They may as well start one of the young qbs and see what you get or what you got.Synder spends a lot of money on players but they are the wrong players, he is trying but with the wrong people and the wrong coaches. It looks to me like the players need a coach like gruden or cowher who isn't afraid to get in these guys faces and let them know they are screwing up.I could go on and on about what is wrong but it seems pointless, so i will just sign off and hope that some wise decisions will be made this offseason for next season because i for one am sick to death of this team and and some players and coaches.

Jason Campbell is no better than Patrick Ramsey. Ramsey would certainly do no worse, a freakin chimpanzee could guide this team to a 2-3 thus far, oh, that's right, we do have chimpanzees running the team IN THE FRONT OFFICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Couldn't help but notice on several occasions that the announcers on yesterdays game stated Portis was just one step away from breaking it. Guess that is the "lost step" everyone wonders about. Sellers again looked like he was going through the motions. Wonder if the front office ever wonders what kind of "O" line they could have had with the money spent on Fat Albert. All that money for 2 tackles and a luck fumble recovery. I'm not as big, but for that money I can stand in the middle and let the offense run over me a few times, then lay down too; although I might really BE hurt. Nothing on the offense is going to change. Perhaps it is time we change the QB, get a new blocking back and use some of the younger guys. Only way we will ever find out just what they can do. Me, I never thought Campbell would ever cut it. Always looks like he is in a fog. Never looks like he know what he is going to do. BTW, did anyone ever tell him that he really can throw the ball away once in a while?

Afetr watching the game I see that Clinton Portis wasn't running hard. He was tripped from behind after having huge holes to run through. The O-line cannot pass protect and the receivers don't get open. Those are the biggest problems. If they start Mason we may be better....

This falls totally on the offensive line WE DONT HAVE ONE they cant block for crap and the owner and vinny because they have no clue what there doing 100 million dollars for one man and did any body see anything great from that man sunday. Orakpo needs to be put as a defensive lineman were he belongs any good defensive coach could see that. If it weren't for the two turn overs i don't think this offense would have ever see the endzone.

I am so sick of wasting my Sunday afternoons watching the Skins lose. I'm a 30 year fan and can't believe what these douche bags trot out onto the field every Sunday. Skins play winless Detroit and LOSE, Skins play winless Carolina and LOSE, hey folks, next week the Skins play winless Kansas City, I don't need a crystal ball to tell you what's going to happen, they're gonna @#$%!ng lose AGAIN. On top of that, a 2 point win against the winless Rams and 3 point win against the sorry-azz Bucs are the only reason this team of bafoons isn't 0-5. This weekend I was planning on letting the family decorate the house for Halloween, but since I'm already flying a Redskins flag in front of my house, that's freakin' scary enough decoration don't you think. I am disgusted with the way Dan Snyder runs this team, why does he have Vinny Cerrato on staff?!? Vinny Cerrato single-handedly destroyed the 49ers organization after a decade of Superbowls and playoffs. Gave the keys to Cerrato and the team won I think 3 games the next year. Cerrato couldn't evaluate NFL talent if his life depended on it, and yet, he's making all the football decisions in DC. Un-freakin-believable. I am totally disgusted, Redskins front-office is a huge pile of sh!t that trickles all the way down to the field. Danny boy, get out your freakin' checkbook and hire a GENERAL MANAGER, a.k.a Bill Parcells style, and ship Vinny Cerrato as far away from Redskins Park as possible, pay him DOUBLE just to keep his azz away!! Next. STAY IN THE OWNERS BOX and away from the day-to-day operations of the Redskins organization, once a real GM is in place your job is just open the checkbook and buy what the GM tells you to buy, after that, go back to the owners' box and sip your mint julips. Like I said, I'm disgusted and I'm sure many Redskins fans share my sentiment. For those of you who read this, I apologize for the rant, but I'm SICK OF IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any Pro coach like Mike Shanahan would be NuTs to work for Washington's Redskins owner who still does not understand the concept of "team".. The dude had a great coach he was "hiring"
Jim Fassel who took the NY Giants to the Super Bowl but instead hired the guy Fassel had selected to be on his staff as offensvie co-ordinator...Zorn...Redskins need a hands-off owner..This owner gives out 100million dollar contracts to Vets who are on the bottom side of careers..When even the great Joe Gibbs cannot wins with this owner forget it

If you include the opener...next week's game against the Chiefs will be the Redskins sixth game in a row against a team that hasn't won a game. I wonder if that's ever happened before? Nice job against so many quality teams! If I were the Rams and Bucs, I'd be embarrased to be beat by these clowns.

Campbell does not fit the west coast offense. He doesn't fit any possession passing offense. Which is why he has to hit the bench.

Campbell throws passes 1/2 to 1 full second late for the west coast offense.

Collins knows the west coast offense. Plays well in the west coast offense. so it's a no brainer. Collins in. Campbell sits.

Sticking win Campbell will guarantee Zorn is fired in january.

mxk1 (#43) It was not Jimmy the Greek that made comments similar to those below but Al Campanis who was associated with the LA Dodgers at the time when he was interviewed on Nightline by Ted Koppel.

"Van (#40) - you dont think Campbell has the facilities?
Where have I heard that before, Jimmy the Greek?

    hahaha"

its funny that on these message boards you can tell who knows football and the people that dont know @#$% 1. your offense is only as good as your offensive line your not going score 21+ points if your starting linemen are composed of practice squad players and guys who would be 2nd and 3rd string players on any other nfl team i dont care if you have joe montana back there he would look garbage behind this line. 2. why the hell is randel el still returning punts? give aldrege a shot he couldnt be do any worse 3. what is there obsession with making orakpo a LB he does nothing but wreck havoc with his hand in the dirt keep him there. this offseason get a gm, draft oline, get a tru OLB and a running back that is a homerun threat ie cj spiller or noel divine. thats all i would consintrate on this offseason

Get over what happened two years ago! That was a completely different system he was playing in. Did Todd Collins win the play off game against Seattle........HELL NO! He choked with those interceptions that he threw. You act like Washington won the damn super bowl with Collins. Those of you who think Todd Collins will allegedly lead Washington to "The Promise Land" are crazy! Again wishing for someone to get hurt is crossing the line. I don't care who the player is

Campbell is awefull! Almost all of the sacks today were his fault. He holds the ball too long and cannot make a decission out there to save his life. I have been saying this since last year...Campbell has no emotion, he has no leadership qualities, and he is a deer in headlights back in the pocket. Those of you who defend him have no idea what you are talking about. Campbell is incompetent...plain and simple. PLEASE BENCH HIM!!!
