Colts remain perfect, down winless Titans 31-9

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—Peyton Manning(notes) isn’t one to check off his latest achievements, especially not during the season.

Good thing. They’re piling up almost as quickly as victories for Manning and his Colts.

Manning’s near-perfect start to the season continued Sunday night as he had 309 yards passing and three touchdown passes, and the Colts never trailed in beating their AFC South rivals 31-9 for their NFL-best 14th straight regular-season win.

“It was a great win,” Manning said. “This is a tough place to play.”

With his performance, Manning joined Kurt Warner(notes) and Steve Young as the only NFL quarterbacks to open a season by throwing for at least 300 yards in the first five games. He will have to wait out a bye week to try and match them with a sixth such game.

The lone scare came post game. Manning said he would have to see a doctor for some treatment of the left knee after a hit from Titans end Kyle Vanden Bosch(notes). That’s the knee that kept him out of the 2008 preseason and led to a slow start.

Manning also reached another milestone when he threw a first-quarter TD pass, the 343rd of his career. He passed Fran Tarkenton and moved into third by himself, behind only Brett Favre(notes) and Dan Marino in that category.

He also became the third quarterback in NFL history to have 70 games with a passer rating of 100 or better, the fourth time he’s done it this season. He had a rating of 109.2, and he trails Favre (96) and Tarkenton (74) in that category.

When asked about the latest milestones, Manning credited his teammates with helping make plays in the passing game.

“You try to do what you have to do to win. I’ve never been about that or try to do that in the middle of the season. At the end of the season, I’ll admit that. I’ll do that for other people. Like if Reggie Wayne(notes) needs five catches, I’ll do that,” he said.

Titans coach Jeff Fisher has another opinion.

“He’s just playing as well now as I think he’s ever played in his career,” Fisher said.

Indianapolis (5-0) has not lost since its last visit to Nashville and leaves now with a firm grip on the AFC South that the Colts have controlled all but the two seasons Tennessee has won the division.

The Tennessee Titans? Their winless misery isn’t close to ending now that they have matched their 0-5 start in 2006. It got so bad that Fisher put in backup quarterback Vince Young(notes) in the fourth quarter.

“We’ve made our own mess,” Fisher said. “We have to find our way out of it.”

The Colts manhandled Tennessee, which started 10-0 last season, with Bob Sanders(notes) watching from the sideline along with starting cornerbacks Kelvin Hayden(notes) and Marlin Jackson(notes).

The Titans turned in their worst offensive performance this season with 245 yards. Kerry Collins(notes) was intercepted in a ball taken away from receiver Nate Washington(notes). Young got a standing ovation from what fans were left when he came in. The change didn’t help. Young’s first pass was nearly intercepted by a Colts defender, he was 0 for 3.

Fisher said Collins remains his starter and isn’t the problem. Collins wasn’t happy at being pulled.

“It was the circumstances,” Collins said.

The game was a mismatch almost from the start with Manning, the three-time MVP, and the NFL’s top passing offense against a defense tied for worst in the league against the pass.

The Titans scratched cornerback Cortland Finnegan(notes) for his tight right hamstring. When Nick Harper(notes) was sidelined in the third quarter holding his right hand, that left the Titans with rookies.

Not that it mattered with Manning going to work.

Manning needed only the first of Tennessee’s two turnovers to put Indianapolis ahead to stay and notch a bit more history for himself. Antoine Bethea(notes) knocked the ball loose from Titans tight end Alge Crumpler(notes), and Keyunta Dawson(notes) recovered in the first.

Five plays later, Manning found Reggie Wayne on a 3-yard TD toss that was the 343rd of his career. Manning could have had a fourth TD in the fourth quarter but Wayne dropped a ball in the end zone.

In the second quarter, he completed each of his seven passes for 81 yards. Joseph Addai(notes) capped the drive with a 1-yard TD run.

Tennessee got two turnovers in the first quarter off a muffed punt and Keith Bulluck’s(notes) interception of Manning, which he celebrated in a sign of the Titans’ desperation by heaving the ball up into the stands. But the offense managed 6 and 9 yards after each turnover and settled for field goals by Rob Bironas(notes).

The Titans responded with their best drive of the night. But Jacob Lacey(notes), starting in place of Hayden, broke up Collins’ pass to Justin Gage(notes) in the end zone, and Tennessee had to settle for Bironas’ third field goal. Chris Johnson, the NFL’s leading rusher, had just 34 yards on nine carries.

“Our defense was able to keep him contained and didn’t let him get loose,” Colts coach Jim Caldwell said.

Manning needed just 47 seconds to give Indianapolis a 21-9 halftime lead. A 93-yard drive was helped by 30 yards of roughing the passer penalties. Vanden Bosch was flagged for grabbing Manning’s legs after a throw, and Jacob Ford(notes) was called for a late hit on the quarterback.

Manning finished with a 39-yard TD toss to Austin Collie(notes), and he found him in the third for a 6-yard TD.

Notes: The Colts are 63-7 when Manning has a passer rating of 100 or better. … Wayne had his third straight game with a TD catch. … Titans tight end Craig Stevens(notes) was having tests for a concussion suffered on the opening kickoff of the game when he crashed helmets with teammate Michael Griffin(notes).

First of all I used to be a Fisher fan for his first 7 or so years with the team, when our offensive and defensive lines KILLED people and no one wanted to tackle Eddie George. At the same time our QB was one of the toughest guys to ever step out there. His coaching worked with that team because they were old school, punch you in the mouth players. We have a lot more team speed, but less size, than the late 90s and early 2000's Oilers-Titans teams had. Fisher still sticks to this run only offense, while throwing 4 yard out routes because his QB can't move out of his throwing stance and he's afraid Collins will throw INTs because he just lofts the ball downfield. The only big throws he ever makes are when guys are WIDE open. On top of this, the defense runs the SAME EXACT base 4-3 on every friggin play. Who can't be successful against that? I think even Cleveland would throw for 300 yards against us right now. The bottom line is, Fisher's attitude and the guys he has under him have been pulling us down for the past several years because he's too stubborn to switch to modern times. The exception used to be the defense coordinators, but we lost Greg Williams and Jim Schwartz to other teams. I do not see any promise in Chuck Cecil as a coordinator if he is not allowed to open the defense up. Fisher needs to either smarten up or be fired, Collins needs to retire and Vince Young needs to be given a chance to excel with a new playbook and offensive gameplan. There is plenty of offensive potential on this team.

I keep hearing about how the Titans started out 10-0 last season. Who cares? Since then they are 3-9. So, they've been sucking on it for a while now. This is nothing new.

The only question here is who knows less and shows it through their posts, SonicBoom (#97) or Casey (#100). SonicBoom seems to think that the front office and the coaches sit around drinking beers at the beginning of the season issuing challenges to one another. These challenges then become the schedule...Casey sounds like a Raiders fan. Raiders fans can remember that one play out of every game that, had it gone "their way," would have changed the outcome of every game, and thus, make the Raiders undefeated. "Of only we would have gotten that holding call in the 1st quarter..."

Peyton Manning= NFL MVP 2009-2010 period!!!

"ducking the steelers", "o-line gets away with holding", "he folds under pressure"

This is not college, NFL teams dont "duck" other teams to avoid ONE loss. Get a clue! AFC south teams dont have to play AFC north teams during the year. If they both make the playoffs, they'll meet.

The REFS dont show any favor to Indi's O-line, they're just that good! Try again...

And last but not least,"he folds under pressure". This one is just classic. Not only is it stupid and totally pointless due to the FACT that all QB's will fold under the right amount of pressure, the fact is teams are scared to blitz him because he will pick them apart. Hey genius, do you think they havent tried blitzing him before? Or is it more appropriate to say they have been trying to figure out a way to stop him ever since he's been in the league, with no luck! DUMB AZZES!!! Do you fools even watch football?

@ #100 - EVERY QB is average when he has extreme pressure! That's like saying a car doesn't run well when it overheats. Whats your next words of wisdom Einstein.

@ #101 - Sad... but true. I love the season regardless since if your a diehard you just enjoy the ride as long as you can however admit I think the reason people are not tired of the Colts each year than say other teams in the past who won all the time is because many outside our fans don't think the Colts will do anything in the playoffs. Even fans who post here deep down think the same thing that we love these fast starts and excellent seasons but OUR REAL SEASON starts in the playoffs.

I would have thought when Peyton was tearing up the league with 49 TD's we were going all the way but we didn't even last year winning out the way we did I KNEW that was the year. But... this year call me a "fanatic" but with us finally having a defense that can stop the run, us not force feeding the ball to a AARP Harrison, 5 receivers who got skills, etc, etc., I will go on record and 100% say..........

    Living proof of an ignoramous.

Manning was pressured that is why he was 31 of 36 in passing UNDER 10 YARDS. If you ever learn ANYTHING about football you'll notice his footwork and quick dump off of the ball before he gets sacked. THAT is what seperated him from many other QBs and THAT is also why you have a rock in your skull.

PLEASE let the Broncos and Giants keep getting all the love since the Colts tend to relish in that underdog role better than the "favs". Love the way the defense is playing... wish we had Coyer last year I can't believe I'm saying this but we have a run defense?! I thought C. Johnson would have a good day but the only highlight he was part of was when Session blew him up on the nastiest hit of the night. This all with Hayden, Sanders, and Jackson on the bench, just think how much depth we will have once they come back for St. Louis along with Gonzo. Colts have a difficult second half of the season with the Jets, Pats, Ravens, Broncos however one thing is certain... after this weekend with Houston, Jax, and Titans the South is there's.

Peyton is good but overated.... when he gets pressured he's an average QB at best... the whole team looks good, So this makes the TRiatans perfect to doesn't it? perfect LOSERS!!!! lol and Lendel as a turd.... I wouldn't mind seeing Peyton gettin his knee snapped, but the way his O line gets away with holding on every play that will never happen...

When you have a coach who wants total control from the sidelines, relying on the run, pounding the ball down your throat, what do you expect? They don't have a General on the field like Payton Manning who can call audibles based on defensive formations. I remember when Payton came in the league. Sure, he had one bad season, but he did his homework, and each year, he has gotten better and better. Vince Young should have used Payton as an example and did his homework, spent a few extra hours a week watching film. Maybe the Titans organization would have trusted him more to run the team and make plays I think Fisher would be fired if he made an effort. In order for Vince Young to be successful with the Titans, he has to be willing to do the research on his opponents, and he needs west coast style offense. West coast offense is not Fisher's style. He would be long gone; wrong coach for a potential star player.

I'm a life-long Hoosier and very blessed from a Sports perspective. Amateur sports capital, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, NCAA, Victory Field, Natatorium, Conseco Fieldhouse, Lucas Oil Stadium, O'Reilly Raceway Park, the Tribe, the Fever, the Ice, the Pacers - and the Colts! More public access Golf courses per capita per state (believe it or not), and a quality of life that ain't bad either.

Proud to be a Hoosier, and awfully proud to be a fan and supporter of one of "THE finest NFL Franchises ever".
