Steelers beat Lions 28-20 for 2nd straight win

DETROIT (AP)—The Pittsburgh Steelers avoided losing another game in the fourth quarter.

Their fans helped out—on the road.

Ben Roethlisberger(notes) had a season-high three touchdowns passes through three quarters and Pittsburgh’s defense was just good enough in the fourth, holding off the Detroit Lions for a 28-20 win Sunday.

The lowly Lions had the ball at their 29 with 3:07 left and two timeouts and a chance to send the game into overtime against the defending champions.

Thousands of black-and-gold clad fans chanted “DE-FENSE!” and twirled Terrible Towels to help Pittsburgh keep Detroit out of the end zone.

“That worked in our favor,” said linebacker LaMarr Woodley(notes), who snapped his sackless season with 1 1/2 on Detroit’s last drive. “Those offensive linemen couldn’t hear the snap count, so they had to watch the ball just like we do.”

Steelers linebacker James Harrison(notes) had three sacks, matching the total he had entering the game, and forced a fumble, much to the delight of many of the folks who filled Ford Field. The Steelers finished with seven sacks and the game drew 59,333 fans and at least half looked and sounded like they were rooting for the visitors.

“Man, they traveled awesome,” Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said. “It was spectacular to stand on the visiting sideline and see the fan support that we had today in this building.”

Pittsburgh has sold out 283 straight home games, leading to throngs of its fans making the 4 1/2 -hour drive to Detroit to take advantage of plenty of seats being available at the venue where the franchise won the Super Bowl in 2006.

“It brought back a lot of memories,” said Hines Ward(notes), who caught a TD pass. “We had just as many fans as we did that time.”

For the first time this season, the Steelers (3-2) won on the road—after blowing fourth-quarter leads at Cincinnati and Chicago—and won consecutive games.

“We’ll get rolling from here with Cleveland coming to town next week,” Woodley said.

Rashard Mendenhall’s(notes) TD run midway through the first quarter gave Pittsburgh the lead and Roethlisberger’s third TD pass provided a 15-point cushion with 6:05 left in the third.

The Lions (1-4) rallied with Daunte Culpepper’s(notes) 25-yard TD pass to Dennis Northcutt(notes) to pull within eight with 4:57 to go. They got to the Pittsburgh 21 before three sacks pushed them back to midfield, forcing Culpepper to heave a pass that was knocked down by cornerback Ike Taylor(notes) just outside the goal line.

“We didn’t always play smart in that game and we didn’t always play well, but I’m proud that we battled the whole way,” Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said. “There were a couple places where it would have been easy for us to give in, and we didn’t do that.”

Roethlisberger was 23 of 30 for 277 yards with TD passes to Mike Wallace(notes), Ward and Heath Miller(notes). One poorly thrown deep out was intercepted by William James(notes) and returned 38 yards for a score in the second quarter.

The two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback made up for it on the next drive, connecting with Ward on a 17-yard pass to give the Steelers a 21-13 lead.

“I don’t feel like I’m playing well,” Roethlisberger said. “I’m disappointed in my performance.”

Culpepper played in place of No. 1 overall draft pick Matthew Stafford(notes) (right knee), and was 23 for 37 for 282 yards with a TD and an interception.

“I still think we have a good ballclub here, but a good ballclub will look at a situation like this and use it to find a way to start winning these games,” Culpepper said. “That’s what we have to find a way to do.”

NOTES: Lions WR Calvin Johnson(notes) (right knee) left in the first quarter and was hobbled as he simply tried to walk after the game. … Pittsburgh S Troy Polamalu(notes) (left knee) and RB Willie Parker(notes) (left toe) were inactive. … Lions LB Larry Foote(notes), who spent his first seven seasons with the Steelers, hugged and chatted with his former teammates in their locker room after the game. “We still love Foote,” Ward said. “Regardless, he’s still a part of this organization.” … Roethlisberger said he’s excited to be scheduled to make an upcoming appearance—via satellite from his home—on “The Jay Leno Show.”

Hey Now. If your team has been as @#$%y as ours for that many years you'd be enjoying our recent success too, and as far as bandwagoners go, WE DON'T WANT YOU, JUMP OFF!! I've been wearing my Tim Crumrie jersey proudly for as long as Icky has been "shuffling". As far as the Steelers go, there's no team (other than maybe the Pats when they were hangin 50 on everyone 2 years ago) that i love to hate more (although Porter leaving has helped that). We know you'll be there in the end, we're just happy to be back in the race....

How did the Bungles fans get on here? This has nothing to do with them, yet they are commenting. It is only week five and they have this attitude like they are going to the SB. If by week 12 you guys still have a winning season, only then will you get some recognition. Don't start celebrating so soon when the season has just begun. The Bungles still have to face Baltimore and Pitt one more time before the season is out, and they won't be over-looking Cinci again. Hope your boys can keep this up all season long cause those games will be physical.

Who are dey exactly? Did dey make the playoffs last year? Or the year before? How bout the year before that? Did dey ever win a Lombardi? Half the Bengals fans on here are bandwagon homos, you have one good start and you all come out of the wood work like its your destiny to be 4-1. Congrats, you beat us once this year, fair and square- We were outplayed- Even I can admit that, no excuses. But seriously though, stop acting like your team is the greatest the NFL's ever seen. You all know that at the end of the day the Bungles are gonna find a way to choke, because, well, thats what the Bungles do best. Enjoy your 10 seconds of fame

I have to say to my fellow Steeler fans who are bashing the Lions to just give it up you classless f*cks. When the Steelers played in the Superbowl, the city of Detroit was nothing but first class in it's treatment of Pittsburgh fans! The people of Detroit and Lions fans alike have been through enough bullsh*t from t he organization and it's owners that we don't need to be petty like that. I am rooting for Detroit to have success one day with it's draft signings and let me say I am a huge Megatron fan! That guy is just plain fu nto watch. I hope he gets better soon. Good luck Lions.

its funny when you look at how your stealers are playing this year and you think your still the best in the NFL... and you can blame all your losing on Troy being out and thats why you lost.... so your whole team is based on 2 players... ben and troy... well we (the bengals) held ben to a low scoring game and your defense couldnt stop a huge march down the field for a win in the final seconds... so any team with a good defense is gonna romp you anyway... and you guys have only played two good teams... and you lost to one and you got lucky against the chargers... our only loss is against a fluke play... and thats exactly what it was.. none of our wins were on flukes. play someone good and then you can start talking about how good you are. Im not even saying we're the best but at least we've played some good teams so far.. our easy weeks will come just like yours.. WHO DEY!

I am glad the steelers won yesterday. I am a die hard steelers fan. I think the offense is getting into the groove of marching down the field. Cant wait for Troy to come back so we can get back to having the best defense. we are good but damn he sure puts us over the top....I am so tired of hearing that Steelers fans suck...I am from Baltimore and you would think I am a convicted felon when I wear my Steelers jersey instead of the Ravens...Give it up people...I like who I like regardless of where I live...I will continue to support my team. I enjoy the game period..

Way to go steelers.i have been a steelers fan for about 35 years.i stick with them through thick and thin.a win is a win,no matter how close the game was.i know that there are alot of people that hate the steelers, but they are confused.i grew up with a whole family of 6 that were all cowboy fans.the steelers caught my eye back in the 70's when the actual steel curtain was introduced.they were mean and nasty.whatever it takes to win, they did it.maybe some other teams should take notes from the steelers, and just maybe they might with a super bowl sometime.a texas native, but a true steelers fan.

im a lions and a steelers fan, but for everyone talking about how bad the lions are, look at the stats. lions had almost as many passing yards, and remember they had a old backup qb. Not a 100mil+ 2 time superbowl winning qb, and the lions didnt even have thier star reciever for most of the game. the lions had way better 3rd down percentage. and for everyone saying pitsburg has a good running game finnaly. how did that lions get more running yards then them?

LMFAO I say ben raped me & I'm willing to settle out of court for tickets & people actually get upset like I'm making a serious accusation! Does nobody have a sense of humor anymore? Geez people lighten up, and what's with all the sh!t talking? I watched for 25yrs before we finally won a SB,and in 25 years I'd never heard as many ignorant steelers fans as I have in the last 3. I'm glad were contenders right now but I can't wait to get rid of the bandwagon, you guys ruin the rest of ours moment.

why do people use the couldve excuse so much? guess what buddy, cinci made plays in clutch down late in the game. they made plays to keep to close the whole game, then at the end they made plays when it counted and got the wins. do you want every win to be a blowout? they didn't win because of some lucky calls that could've gone either way or some fluke 90 yard touchdown as time expired; they made plays and won. period.

For all the Ravens and Cats fans.... Ravens started to believe the hype about how good they were - SD showed they have no pass D and they play 2 pass happy teams the past two week and both ended in losses. The SD game should of ended the same way - PERIOD!! - but it didnt so let really look at whom they beat before believing the hype. As for Cinci - they are playing some inspired ball for the first time since 05. But they are damn lucking to be 4-1!! They could be 2-3 had one or two play not gone their way. So let not also believe the hype either Cinci..... Its why they play the game.
