Cutler’s late TD pass rallies Bears past Seattle

SEATTLE (AP)—Converted defensive back Devin Hester(notes) is still learning Chicago’s offense. Yet he pulled aside Jay Cutler(notes) on Sunday and delivered a veteran receiver’s plea: I’m open. Give me the ball.

Cutler listened quietly. Then, with less than 2 minutes left and Chicago down by two, he obliged.

Cutler’s miserable Bears debut two weeks ago became further forgotten when he completed all three of his passes on the decisive drive. The third was for 36 yards to Hester with 1:52 remaining, on the slant the receiver had requested, rallying the Bears to a 25-19 victory over the depleted Seattle Seahawks.

Cutler pumped his fists, hugged his linemen, and raised both arms triumphantly after the go-ahead score.

Exactly the scene the Bears envisioned when they traded a king’s ransom to Denver to get him.

“I pride myself in that. I want the ball in those situations and I think this offense is starting to get a feel for it,” Cutler said.

“Any time you can get Devin Hester one-on-one, it works.”

Cutler overcame a malfunctioning helmet headset and a raucous Seattle crowd that made play calls hard to hear to complete 21 of 27 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception.

He also completed more than 70 percent of his throws last week against the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers—a doubly strong response to the career-high four interceptions he threw in a loss on opening night at Green Bay.

“To me, you judge good quarterbacks based on what they can do late in the game, and Jay wants the ball in his hands,” Bears coach Lovie Smith said. “He had a good look about him knowing that we had to go down and score. We all had confidence that he would lead us.”

Hester said he had “chitchatted” Cutler throughout the game, telling him “Hey, the slant’s there.”

Almost everything else was, too, for Cutler and Chicago (2-1) late against a defense that was missing two starting linebackers and two starting cornerbacks— then lost a third when Ken Lucas(notes) missed the winning drive because he aggravated a groin injury.

When asked what Cutler’s shown him since that messy debut in Green Bay two weeks ago, Hester said: “A lot of poise. There are situations when the game’s not going to go our way, and he continues to be confident and telling us ‘Stay in the game!’

“That’s what this team is counting on.”

The Seahawks (1-2) can no longer count on health, or home-field advantage. They missed quarterback Matt Hasselbeck(notes) because of a broken rib, plus six other starters, and lost for the seventh time in 10 home games.

Backup quarterback Seneca Wallace(notes), who set career highs with 26 completions, 44 attempts and 261 yards, converted a fourth-down pass and led Seattle drove to the Bears 29 with 30 seconds left. But Wallace then threw high and incomplete to Julius Jones(notes) on fourth-and-2.

Chicago was up 17-16 with 8 minutes left when Seahawks rookie linebacker Aaron Curry(notes) sped into Cutler’s passing arm and knocked the ball loose. Cory Redding(notes) recovered the fumble at the Bears 39.

Olindo Mare(notes), who was just 4 of 6 on field goals, converted the turnover into a 46-yard field goal. The Seahawks led 19-17 with 5:17 remaining.

The Bears answered by driving to the Seattle 36 by the 2-minute warning. Then Hester ran a slant route inside third-string cornerback Travis Fisher(notes). Safety Deon Grant(notes) tried to level Hester but nailed Fisher instead. With both Seahawks on the turf, Hester trotted in for the go-ahead score.

The Seahawks debuted blinding, nuclear green jerseys. They should have been wearing ones with a red cross on them.

Nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Walter Jones(notes) and three-time Pro Bowl linebacker Lofa Tatupu(notes) were among the other starters missing. Six others played while banged up.

Yet Seattle jumped out to a 13-0 lead after 18 minutes. They blew it largely because of two turnovers in the second half.

A fumble by T.J. Houshmandzadeh(notes) after a catch set up Cutler’s 7-yard touchdown pass to rookie Johnny Knox(notes), who juked Curry to give Chicago its first lead at 14-13 early in the third quarter. Then an ill-advised interception by Wallace out of his own end zone to Lance Briggs(notes) at the Seahawks 14 led to a 37-yard field goal by Robbie Gould(notes) and a 17-13 lead for Chicago.

The two missed field goals by Mare inside 43 yards left the 36-year-old former Pro Bowler an endangered Seahawk.

“You’ve got to make those kicks, especially in a game like this when you’re in a game like this kicking and fighting and scratching and playing your tail off and you miss those kicks,” coach Jim Mora said, anger growing in his voice. “Not acceptable. Not acceptable. Absolutely not acceptable.

“We’ll look at making a change everywhere. We’re not going to play our (rears) off and have a field goal kicker go out there and miss two field goals and lose a game.”

NOTES: Chicago lost Hunter Hillenmeyer(notes), who was replacing Brian Urlacher(notes), to a rib injury. Nick Roach(notes) got rave reviews as the latest replacement middle linebacker. … LB David Hawthorne(notes), who made his first career start for Tatupu, had 16 tackles—tied for second-most in a Seahawks game.

I heard all the announcers & seen the reports on how Matt Forte has to get on track? I think it's the offensive line that needs to get on track I saw Olin Kruetz getting knocked back 3 yards into the running lanes, Ho w can Forte get on track if his own linemen are in his way. I liked the one play where Chris Williams was in his way & he decided to knock Williams out of the way & pick up a couple more yards. HEY O-LINE SHOW SOME PRIDE!!!! GET YOUR BODIES INTO THE DEFENDERS & KEEP THEM IN FRONT OF YOU & DRIVE THOSE LEGS & KEEP DRIVING THOSE LEGS UNTIL YOU HEAR A WHISTLE!!! THAT IS CALLED RUN BLOCKING NOT ROCKET SCIENCE!! LETS GO 74,68,57,63,76 SHOW THEM & ME THAT YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!

To all those who are super excited the bears beat the steelers. It's because it's only the first few weeks and they havent started payin the refs off yet. Screw the steelers and their bs championships. Cutler's a whiner who can't take a hit, however i'll give the team credit for coming back and gettin the win. The Hawks need a new starting qb period fire hasselbeck, cuz he can't play a game without getting hurt. Seattle is very used to bad sports teams hell just look at the mariners & most of the seahawks seasons over the 30 years or so they've been here.

Thanks to all who responded (to post #127). The only reason I asked is this: Say Chicago fails to make the two-point conversion, then they're up by four points. Say Seattle then returns the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and converts the extra point, Seattle then leads by three points. The Bears then come downfield and kick a field goal--the game is tied going into overtime. Then it's 50/50 as to who wins the game. To my way of thinking, based on the scenario I described, the Bears had a better chance of winning the game if they just made the one-point conversion (they still would be leading by five points), instead of gambling on the two pointer (despite the fact that they made it). Believe me, a six-point lead late in the game is worthless if the opposing team scores. How many times is an extra point missed? One in a hundred?

25 - 19 Bear s won. Or did Seattle lose? In any event here are my thoughts on it.

If Seattle had their starting or even 2nd string left tackle in the game, it would have helped Seneca Wallace. Poor guy was running for his life all day. Matt Brokenback was thanking God all day that he wasn't in there because compared to Wallace, he is a sitting duck. Hell, compared to Kurt Warner, he's a sitting duck.

T.J. keep your damned mouth shut and catch the f&*king ball. Oh, and not fumbling it would be nice too.

Olino Mare. You are paid to make the kicks that you missed. Do not think that we have forgotten your performance in that pre-season game at KC. I could have come closer on those kicks and I am in a wheelchair. You ought to be fired as soon as a suitable replacement can be found.

Defense. Well, at least you shut down the run this week. Don't laugh readers, that passes for shutting down the run in Seattle especially after that fiasco in San Fransicko. But one wonders how different this game would have been if we had Hill, Tatupu and Trufant out there instead of a pack of never was' and used to be's. Notable exception must be made for one David Hawthorne, kid you played your heart out and as a fan I appreciated it.

    Well, time for the walking wounded to meander on over to Peytons' house where the only questions have nothing to do with who will win (forgone conclusion) but by how much, and who is going to get healed or injured. I leave you all with the now annual cry of the rain soaked Seattle Seahawks fan;

    THERE'S ALWAYS NEXT YEAR!

This Bears win shouldn't be dis-credited by Seattle fans. Week in and week out, most teams in the league have injuries to their top players and the backups come in and get you through. Good coaching ensures that all players on the team are on the same page. @#$%, we lost Urlacher for the entire season in week 1. But we moved on and beat the Super Bowl champs the following week. In this game, Urlachers replacement got hurt, so we had to go to the 3rd string middle linebacker. What separates the better teams from the bad teams in the league is the ability to survive week in and week out. And I don't care how beat up Seattle is or was for this game, road wins are tough in the NFL, no matter who you are. Seattle has lost a lot of what made them good earlier in this decade (coaching, running game, above avg passing game). Give Mora some time to develop a solid coaching foundation there and I think they can be good again. Until then, stop making excuses and find a way to survive. Talk all the @#$% about Cutler you want, but the bottom line is simple...the last couple of weeks when his team needed him the most, he performed. He didn't choke like Wallace on a 4th and 2 with the game on the line. What Cutler is doing is going to build the confidence of everyone around him, and then look out. Hester is just emerging. Johnny Knox came out of nowhere, and lets not forget about Gregg Olsen and Matt Forte. The Bears have a lot more weapons than people give us credit for. Just watch as the Bears keep putting themselves in a position to win the game week in and week out. That's all any fan can ask of their team. Even in Cutlers horrid opening against the Packers, the Bears still were able to keep it close. Thats what good teams do. Are we great? No. Are we Bad? No. Can we improve? Definitely. With Detroit next week we pretty much should be 3-1 after a month of play, and that's all that really matters. Minn is good and the favorite to win our division now....but let's see how Favre's body holds up. He keeps taking hits and its only going to take one big one to end his career.

Da Bears! Another nailbiter, I was happy with the final, but once again question Lovie's sanity. Bears lost four games last year due to coaching, dropped the first one this year as a result of coaching. Didn't read many of these comments, seems like a lot of seahawks fans out there, I feel you're pain. Ya'll got a good team, but injuries and coaching is going to be rough this year if yesterday is any indication of how the seasons going to go. PS, make or miss those kicks, remember, one of the hawks late drives was kept alive on two facemasking penalties.

Other teams take note, Don't kick on the Bears! four makeable missed FG's against them in the last two games ;) (2 Steelers, 2 Seahawks)

ugg lime green uniforms wft??? and a contriversial call that went against seattle at the goal line..the game was lost with that reversal .. seattle stany in until the end we still need players that are not on the bench hurt same as last year.. we need a kicker that can actually get into the endzone between the uprights.. for 3 points.. on paper we should of wont this game.. time to resign a kicker and get players healthy and able to play more than a quarter of game without being injured.. i think in the end seattle will be there its still early but they cant wait too long .. go seahawks

Actually, 12th man, RB's get paid to run the ball, catch the ball, and block. So a throw to your RB on 4th and 2 is actually a good call to get short yardage to keep the drive alive. AND, if Wallace wouldn't have started, whatever QB you would have had back there would have gotten sacked for about 100 yards yesterday. Wallace seriously got himself out of so much pressure with his legs.

And jeywn12, The Bears went for the 2 point conversion because it put them up by 6 instead of 5, and let's say the Seahawks scored that touchdown and Ware missed the PAT, then you still have an OT to try and win the game. If you don't go for the 2 point conversion, then Seattle scores a touchdown, with or without a PAT, they beat you by 1 or 2. Pretty simple to understand.

They won't fire Mare. Everyone has a bad game every now and then. Seattle has bigger things to worry about then replacing the kicker. He still does very well on kickoffs. They should have started Mike Teel, he would have closed the game out better than Wallace did. Why on 4th and 2 do you throw to the RB. They get paid to run the ball not catch it, give your WR a chance to make the play if you are going to throw it.

Wow, you know bad teams always find a way to loose. Seneca is a better receiver than QB. His record is horrible. I've been a Hawks fan since 77, we have been plagued with injuries over the past few years but thats no excuse. mental mistakes and just dumb plays are what cause you to loose.

    1. Missed field goals - Mare......YOUR FIRED!!!!!!!!
    2. FIeld awareness - Forsett - catch the ball when you call fair catch
    3. Field awareness - Wallace - when you scramble out of the pocket throw the ball away instead of taking a 3 yard loss - OBTW we were 2 yards short of the first down in the 4th quarter...Hmmm and quit trying to throw sidearm and off your back foot, you are not even close to the leagues top QB's actually your not even close to average. As your skills develop you may be able to improvise but not now!!!! Coach Mora, PLEASE get us a new backup tp to Matt, dont p/u another linebacker when we get the # 4 pick again.......because thats where we are heading if you dont do something quick. Hurry BACK MATT!!!

The Bears are INSANE if they think they'll win their division. They escaped this game with a win on a $hittY kicker's leg and a horribly depleted team.
