GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP)—Maybe they should call the place Manning Manor.

On the field where little brother Eli led the New York Giants to a Super Bowl triumph two seasons ago, Peyton Manning(notes) threw four touchdown passes in his first game there, three in the second quarter, to power the Indianapolis Colts past Kurt Warner(notes) and the turnover-plagued Arizona Cardinals 31-10.

The Colts’ quarterback completed 24 of 35 for 379 yards with one interception.

“He knew what plays to call at the right time,” Arizona defensive tackle Darnell Dockett(notes) said, “and we couldn’t stop them.”

The game featured two of the most prolific quarterbacks in NFL history in Manning and Warner. But while Manning’s line gave him time to carve up the Cardinals’ defense, the 38-year-old Warner was under a fierce rush all night long.

“I think that was the key to the game, personally,” said Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney(notes), who was in Warner’s face throughout before leaving with a quadriceps injury late in the third quarter. “Our offensive line did a great job protecting Peyton, giving him time to find his receivers. And then I think collectively as a defense we put pressure on Warner and had him uncomfortable all game.”

It didn’t help that Arizona turned the ball over twice deep in Indianapolis territory, either.

“Against good football teams, ones that play as well as they did tonight offensively, you can’t make those mistakes,” Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said, “and that’s what we did.”

Warner was 30 of 52 for 332 yards and one score but was picked off twice.

Despite being on the field for 84 plays in the Colts’ victory at Miami on Monday night, the Indianapolis defense was tough. After allowing 239 yards on the ground against the Dolphins, the Colts allowed 24 yards in 12 attempts against Arizona.

Of course, the Cardinals all but abandoned the ground game when they fell far behind, a situation that the Colts’ defensive line relished.

“We kind of lick our chops,” Freeney said. “This is what we want.”

Indianapolis safety Antoine Bethea(notes) recovered a fumble at the 5 to stop one Arizona drive and intercepted a deflected pass in the end zone to thwart another.

Manning had four TD passes in a game for the 18th time, moving him ahead of Johnny Unitas into third on the NFL career list, behind Dan Marino’s 21 and Brett Favre’s(notes) 20.

Manning topped 300 yards passing for the third time in three this season, giving him 50 for his career.

“The thing is that we constantly have to make certain that we don’t take it for granted,” coach Jim Caldwell said of Manning’s performances. “He’s had some just unbelievable games. … I think he amazes us every time he does it, but he does it so often if you don’t watch yourself you can think that it’s commonplace, but it certainly is not.”

Manning started slow but sliced and diced the Cardinals with a show of precision in the second quarter.

“We were kind of figuring things out as we went along,” he said. “Once we got into a comfort zone, we really executed from there.”

He threw 20 yards to Reggie Wayne(notes) for the first score, 10 yards to Dallas Clark(notes) for the second and a nifty 53 yards to Pierre Garcon(notes) as Indianapolis took a 21-3 halftime lead.

Manning added a 3-yard TD toss to Joseph Addai(notes) in the third quarter to make it 28-10.

The Cardinals, up 3-0 early, drove deep into Indianapolis territory but Tim Hightower(notes) fumbled at the 5.

The Colts (3-0) then went 95 yards in 11 plays for the touchdown that put them ahead for good.

“That just kind of took the wind out of us,” Whisenhunt said.

Wayne made a one-handed grab of Manning’s pass at the pylon on a 20-yard play that put the Colts up 7-3 with 9:04 left in the half.

“Can’t draw that up,” Manning said. “You know he’s capable of making those plays. … Those are the plays we expect him to make.”

After Indianapolis stuffed Arizona’s offense, the Colts went 57 yards in six plays, Manning throwing 10 yards to Clark to make it 14-3 with 5:49 to go in the half.

The prettiest score came when Manning lofted a pass down the sideline into the outstretched arms of Garcon on a 53-yard scoring play that made it 21-3 with 1:52 to go in the half.

Warner drove the Cardinals (1-2) to the Indianapolis 1-yard line in the final seconds of the half. He threw to Steve Breaston(notes) at the goal line but Melvin Bullitt(notes) didn’t allow the receiver into the end zone.

On the next play, Warner threw under pressure toward Larry Fitzgerald(notes) in the end zone. Tim Jennings(notes) deflected the ball in the air and Bethea intercepted.

Arizona took the second half kickoff and went 73 yards in eight plays, with Warner throwing 10 yards to Anquan Boldin(notes) for the touchdown to cut it to 21-10 with 10:50 to play in the third.

But a 72-yard pass play from Manning to rookie Donald Brown(notes) set up the 3-yard TD toss to Addai to boost the lead to 28-10 with 2:26 left in the quarter.

Freeney limped off the field at the end of the third quarter with a right leg injury and did not return. He said he “felt something pop” in his right quadriceps and planned to undergo an MRI Monday or Tuesday.

Arizona, 8-2 at home last season, fell to 0-2 there this season, with echoes of boos through what was left of the crowd as Warner was sacked for a 28-yard loss on fourth down with about 6 1/2 minutes to play.

NOTES: Dockett left with an ankle injury in the first quarter but returned and played despite the injury. … The Cardinals have a bye next week. … The Colts rolled up 505 yards. … Two injured Indianapolis defensive starters—MLB Gary Brackett(notes) (left knee) and CB Kelvin Hayden(notes) (sore hamstring)—were inactive.

Card Colt game proved a lot and I'm a Cardinal fan for 50 years:
    1) Karlos Dansby and Andrian Wilson are NOT special players against good teams
    2) the pass interference against Card WRs was nullified by Cards holding on every play
    3) Cards need a tight end
    4) Cards can't beat Manning without rushing him- Includes Eli
    5) Beanie Wells is probably better runner than Hightower
    6) the 3-4 defense is a gimme for Manning
    7) how good/bad is McFadden?
    8) Cardinals are a dumb football team; Colts very celebral
    9) If Breaston, Fitz & Boldin are covered by four defenders ,why can't we run? No TE?
    10) Does Whisenhunt have a clue? or is it excuses week after week

Thomas B, do you think those greats would have been so great if they did not have help from their defense. Your offense can be as good as can be, but if your defense keeps giving up points, then how can you blame the quarterback for that? I never understood how people say the QB is the one that lose and win games. If i'm not mistaken, it is a WHOLE team playing on the field, not just the QB playing offense and defense by himself against the other team. So i guess then in the win/loss column, it should just have the quarterback's name next to the record instead of the whole team, right? If the other team is scoring a lot of points, how is that the quarterback's fault? He is going to catch interceptions, force fumbles, tackle and get sacks from the sidelines? Just because they win a lot of games in the regular season doesn't mean anything. The competition is tougher in the playoffs then in the regular season. How many teams won the Superbowl with weak defenses?

I couldn't wait to see last night's game. Manning vs. Warner!!! Talk about a clash of the titans!

But the game was lost by Warner's offensive line. I don't care how good a QB is, he isn't going to do very well when he's getting chased all over the feild, running for his life. GIVE THE QB SOME PROTECTION!!!

Oh, BTW, holding onto the ball on the 5 yard line isn't a bad idea, either.

What a let down. I would have been pleased if either guy won. They are both legendary. But I thought we'd at least see a good game.

I had to feel for Warner on Sunday Night too. No qb could've gotten much of anything done under that kind of pressure. IE: Brady against the Jets last week. Warner is a great qb, but he more so a class A citizen!

You can scabble over misspelled words all day long. The fact are the facts about Manning. If the Bears would have had a better offense they would have beaten the Colts in the SB. If Manning would have played for the Ravens they would have won every SB up to now. Who cares they had a below average defense. Their defense did well enough to get them 12 and 13 win seasons and all those division titles. Manning has struggled in the post season has thrown about 22 TD's to 19 INT's. That has nothing to do with the defense. As I said before, Manning is a good quarterback, but not the greast of all time. He is a good guy on an off the field and a great competitor. Has broken/or will break numerous records and all that is great for HIM. But he has fallen short in big games. Whether you blame the defense or his inability to move the ball and score points when it counts. When you think back at the "greatest', I don't include Warren Moon, who has thrown for all those yards. I am not too concerned with who has the most yards. I am concerned with who has led the team to the promise land. If you got there and won, greate, now can you do it again. When you look back at SB history, as great as he was how many times was he there? The greates like Montana, Elway, Kelly, Akman come to mind. And when I say he has lost big games it is true and not ignorant. Because he is part of the offensive team and if you did not put enough points on the board regardless of how your defense played, then it's your fault too.

It was a pleasure to watch these QB's. This is why many of us watch the games. The fools pontificating that either is 'over-rated' have no idea how good even the average QB must be to stick around as a starter. All these comments from guys to whom I wouldn't entrust a Pop Warner team. These particular QB's are exceptional and have rings. There are so many superior players who truly feel the void at retirement wthout a ring. It means a lot.

you have to feel sorry for Warner, his line did him wrong. He didn't have a chance on that 35 yard sack. Give the guy some protection and he can smoke anyone.

Sure was funny listening to the commentary on how Warner needs to take a shot down the field as he is getting smothered within 2 seconds of getting the snap.

Dungy's having a hard time not saying "We" when referring to the colt. GO COLTS!!!!

Hey Mike W, your comments on the Cardinals coaching just may be why Pittsburgh chose Tomlin over Whisenhunt. By the way, back in 90 or 91, Archie Manning was speaking at a convention held by the company I was working for at the time. Someone asked him if he thought anyone would break Dan Marino's record. Hmmm, I believe Peyton was still in high school at the time, and Archie gave a non-commital answer. Peyton may not be the greatest qb of all time, but he's gotta be in the top 3.

I'm from Az. but love the colts but remain faithful to the Cardinals. I keep hoping every year they will do better but keep seeing problems every year and not consistent in playing. I think the coach is the one that needs his butt kicked. He is making the wrong calls a lot. If they turn Warner lose he does good and if he uses the hurry up he does good. The defense can play good but last night was embearasing to watch. Come on coach get your s**t together and win some games. Don't make this another losing year.

I would first like to say that in order to post comments a person should be able to spell semi-well and also have a decent grasp on the English language. I am a COLTS FAN, I live in Indy and am elated that Manning over the past decade or so has turned this town into a "football town". He is one of the greatest players to ever play and it is unfair to measure his success by superbowl wins mainly because it takes the entire team to win these. This man has broken nearly every record set by a quarterback and the game versus the Dolphins demonstrates his true talent. There is no way the Colts should have won that game on paper basically because NONE of those quarterbacks Thomas B. mentioned ever DID!!! It's how Manning plays when he faces adversity. Indy has never had a good run defense, probably never will. Teams can run all day on the Colts and for some reason WE WIN...A LOT. Rarely has any Colts' loss been due to Manning's underperformance. So to say that Manning loses big games is ignorant and un-true. The less-than-stellar perfomances by the defense are usually to blame for the losses in these "big" games that Thomas B. thinks Manning is losing. Be serious!!! I'm guessing you must be a fan of a team that is constantly embarrassed by Manning and the Colts. :)

Then again I have always noticed on these sports blogs that the middle aged guys feel like they have to have a whole rant on here to get their point across. So sad.

No you have a valid point.. Adam V bounced one off the goal post last week and missed a 32 yarder lastnight so trust me im just having a lil fan faith on this one. lol To be honest I was thinking like you and HATED them cutting shane andrus (i know i butchered his name) but until Adam V starts missing kicks left and right I am not worried since he has won more games than he's lost.

Speaking of loosing kicks for us I wonder what mike vanderjagt is up to now a days... havent heard of that guy since he blew our chance verses Pitt. Last I heard he got cut from the CFL. Man.. the most kicker with the best kicking percentage getting cut by the CFL, thats crazy!

I think I'm fearful of the SD Chargers and remember the Colts kicker missing a very important, makeable field goal that ended the playoffs for the Colts.

Wow to any one out there who is saying either warner is washed up, or to give the ball to Lienart?!?! PLz never comment on football again cause you dont know a @#$%in thing. First of all, like anyone with half a brain has already state, warner couldn't possibly play a good game when the offencive line wouldnt give him enough time to snap the ball before he was pressured. On the plays when he had time to look down field he did just fine finding his recievers and making the plays. Lienart on the other hand could have 5 minutes in the pocket and he over throws the guys every time. Did you not watch the last game? YOu know the one where Warner got protection and SET AN NFL RECORD, then the put Lienart in and almost every throw he attempted was atleast 4 feet off target. No they dont need to get rid of warner they need to wake the @#$% up and put a tight end or running back on the side of the offencive line they are getting beat on. It friggen amazed me watching that game, play after play the left tackle was getting killed and the never put a tight end or running back to his side to help WTF COACHES ARE YOU RETARDED? Not to mention the 3 down lineman against Manning giving him time to sit back and pick the secondary apart.... YOu would think losing the super bowl in the last 2 minutes by dropping back into coverage would teach them a lesson??? Someone needs to kick some coaches asses

Thomas B., You make a valid point but u are forgetting one very important thing.

The QBs that u mentioned had excellent defenses that helped them win championships, even Brady! When u look at at Pats defense, the Broncos, 49ers , those were great defenses, something Manning has never had. The only time he had a good defense for 4 weeks, and the Colts were world champions: now imagine if Manning had a defense like the Ravens? The Colts would have won 5 straight super bowls by now. Manning has won everything that has to be won as a QB in football, people should get off his back and admit he is one of the top 5 QBs to ever play the game when it is all said and done. The guy takes a small market team like the Indianapolis Colts, puts it on the football map, and makes the team a powerhouse in the NFL. I just get irritated when people refuse to acknowledge that Manning is one of the best, if not the best to ever play: The guy has no D whatsoever, yet he leads his team to come backs and what not. Montana played in an era where there was no free agency or salary cap, so he had the same team for like, forever, nowadays, it is impossible to keep 4 star players on one team...So Thomas B. next time please look at all facets before making a judgement: My judgement is, Manning is one of the best ever, if not the best because of what he has in defense and how he instill fear in every defense that he faces
