Vick does little in return, Eagles rout Chiefs

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—Michael Vick(notes) was a super decoy.

Getting significant contributions from their youngsters and backups, the Philadelphia Eagles routed the Kansas City Chiefs 34-14 in Vick’s return to the NFL on Sunday.

The Eagles didn’t need much from Vick and they got nothing from Donovan McNabb(notes) or Brian Westbrook(notes), who both sat out with injuries.

Kevin Kolb(notes) threw for 327 yards and two touchdowns, LeSean McCoy(notes) had 84 yards rushing and one TD, and DeSean Jackson(notes) and Brent Celek(notes) each had 100-plus yards receiving and one score for Philadelphia (2-1).

Kolb became the first quarterback to throw for 300 yards in his first two career starts. While he did most of the work, Vick got all the attention.

Playing his first regular-season game since Dec. 31, 2006—1,001 days ago— Vick ran once for 7 yards and threw two incomplete passes.

“It’s a different role, but it is what it is,” Vick said. “It was a small look. We have so much in store for the future.”

Vick will have more chances to display the skills that earned him the Superman nickname back when he was a three-time Pro Bowl quarterback with the Atlanta Falcons. For now, he’s content doing whatever it takes to help the Eagles win.

“It’s a different scenario. It’s hard. I haven’t been in this before,” he said. “I tell myself to stay loose and be ready for whenever they call my number and play within the framework of the offense.”

McNabb missed his second straight game with a broken rib. Westbrook sat out with a sore ankle. It was no problem against the Chiefs (0-3). Kolb, a third-year pro, and McCoy, a rookie second-round pick, filled in nicely.

“We recognized that Donovan and Westbrook were out,” Kolb said. “It was an opportunity for us to prove why they drafted us. We focused on dominating them.”

Vick, who served 18 months in prison on a federal dogfighting charge, didn’t have to wait long to get on the field. He entered to a semi-standing ovation for the second play from scrimmage, was split wide as receiver and came around for a fake reverse.

Overall, Vick got in for 11 plays. He lined up at receiver once, took the snap in shotgun formation nine times and was directly under center once. Kolb was on the sideline for the 10 plays Vick was in at QB.

Vick was expected to run Philadelphia’s version of the wildcat offense, but McCoy took most of those snaps.

With Vick on the field, the Eagles gained a net total of 30 yards. They got 390 without him. Or McNabb. Or Westbrook.

“We wanted to gradually get him in and get him back to game speed and knock some rust off,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said of Vick.

Matt Cassel(notes) threw for 90 yards and two TDs for Kansas City. The Chiefs remained winless under new coach Todd Haley.

“We have the talent to compete with anyone,” Cassel said. “We just have to eliminate the bad football and the penalties.”

Jackson finished with a career-high 149 yards receiving, including a 64-yard TD. Celek had 104 yards on eight catches.

The normally pass-happy Eagles were more balanced during their first two scoring drives. After Kolb connected with Jason Avant(notes) for a 10-yard gain on third-and-6, three straight running plays moved the ball to the Chiefs 5.

Then Vick, who had a 7-yard run on his second snap, fired a pass out of bounds under heavy pressure and took a hard hit. McCoy took the next snap in the wildcat and ran in for his first career TD to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.

Kolb hit Jackson for 43 yards on the next possession to move the Eagles into Kansas City territory. Vick handed off to McCoy for an 11-yard run on his only play during the series. Kolb sneaked in from the 1 to put Philadelphia ahead 14-0.

The Chiefs took advantage of good field position after the Eagles failed to convert a fourth-and-1 at Kansas City’s 44. With Vick watching from the sideline, Kolb rolled out and his pass was knocked down by Mike Vrabel(notes).

Cassel’s 13-yard TD pass to Mark Bradley(notes) cut it to 14-7.

But the Eagles answered on their first play after the kickoff. Jackson turned Kolb’s short pass over the middle into a 64-yard TD to make it 21-7. Jackson dove into the end zone and appeared to land awkwardly on his gimpy groin as he did a half split, but he stayed in.

Kolb zipped a 35-yard TD pass to Celek midway through the fourth quarter to put the game way out of reach.

Kolb threw for 391 yards, two TDs and three interceptions in a 48-22 loss to New Orleans last week. Kolb completed 24 of 34 passes and had a QB rating of 120.6 against the Chiefs.

Notes: The Eagles inducted former QB Randall Cunningham and OL Al Wistert into the team’s honor roll at halftime. … Philadelphia improved to 5-6 the week before a bye under Reid. … Jackson has four career 100-yard receiving games—two last September and two this September. He’s the first Eagles player to have TD receptions of 60-plus yards in consecutive games since Mike Quick in 1985. … Celek is the first Eagles tight end to have consecutive 100-yard games since Pete Retzlaff in 1965.

LEANDRA, thank you and I appreciate your comments which was real talk. I felt that I had to say something, because everyone in the U.S., who is not indigenous (so-called black American people) believe that they know something about us, and who we are. As you know, our history has been tampered with, and we have been living a lie for a very long time. But, the truth is out there now, all we have to do is imbrace it, and learn from it, which is what our ancestors envisioned us doing all along.

Our ancestors knew that they weren't crazy, but they had to survive, so they put faith in the Creator, that he would take care of their descendants, and that we would one day realize the truth and change our ways. The more we learn, lets us know that we have so much further to travel. We have come a long way, and yet, there is still a long way to go. Stay strong sister.

:) Wow (MnN), good history lesson, but you're alittle misinformed and alot behind on your (what is happening now today) education. And bottom line you missed my whole point from the beginning. Sad, it must have touched a sensitive spot with you. Lets try this again. What i speak of is statistical and reality. Proof in the pudding s#!t, google it all. Anyways, African Americans ARE the model of civilization in a great deal. We've modified, structured, implemented change in ALL today. Name one way that is major or minor we haven't. Not one time did i quote Blacks are better than other Folks. If you read clearer, bottom line of what i meant was Blacks are dominate at anything we do, in this topic, it was pertaining to SPORTS. I will even take it a few steps futher for you specifically. When people with light skin go to tanning beds, what color skin are they leaning towards, or immitating which culture? Ask your friends... Here, how about this, lets use the word Urban, its the new Black anyways. :) But, we've urbanized music, in everyway possible. LOL even country music. I actually preferred country music left the way it was, but change is good sometimes. Commercials from Pepsi, Coke, McDonalds, Burger King. (What caucasian King do you know RAP?) Just saying, we've urbanized his ass. And thats just a few things to start off with. Body implants, from lips, breast, to ass, immitating what culture image. Lets go to the Auto Industry, GM: Buick, Cadillac, Chevy. Ford, i can list how its been urbanized as well. S%#t, the new Camaro comes out of factory with a 21-22 inch size rim, if you want to go there. Who stood behind and started with all that first? All that is urban, the whole market customizes cars from the factory because of what WE want and what ideas we have given them, if not it wont sell. And in America its all about making money. But, alittle besides my point, urban dominacy is civilized. It don't take a racist to speak that or know that because, I'm far from it. It's just Real Talk. To try and school me on slavery was the lowest you could strike. That's what all non African Americans do when the conversation gets to much for you, you run off with that. To bad for you, im not offended in what you thought you knew, I'm more disappointed in what you lack to know about today's civilization. And it's obvious your around middle age or older, because we dont see eye to eye. I just represent my race firmly and defend it strongly. And for people, like yourself, to just live on IGNORING the fact of what WE do and have done in the world, still isn't significant enough to have proven our dominacy in sports or whatever. You just try to take credibility for it all, until I come along. :) You know some 1st generation African's LOL, so what, that makes you COOL dude, better yet, you're one of the BRO'S now, possibly a BRUTHA. LOL. Be real, that makes the 1st African generation friends you know, be 100 plus in age. WOW! Do me a favor and tell them i said what up :)

The question I always ask is: If we had any connection to Africa, why do not the Africans on that continent, acknowledge it? We have sent untold amounts of capitol to so-called Africa, we even raised the loudest voices in securing the freedom of Nelson Mandela, did Nelson Mandela ever personally thank us? Even when Marcus Garvey was alive and preaching the back to Africa ideology, did that continent ever welcome us?

It is not a matter of anything but blood (skin color does not actually determine heritage). We have a different blood type than the so-called Africans who live on that Continent, not because our blood is so-called mixed with European blood, but because we are a DIFFERENT PEOPLE ALTOGETHER. If the black lady that traced her heritage back to someplace in Africa, didn't find an ancient grandmother whom she could trace back to and say that her mother definitely came from this woman, (through her grandmother, who would be her mother's mother) in Africa, she doesn't have the heritage going back to so-called Africa. I say so-called because Africa is not the true name of that Continent, so their is really no such people called African. It would probably be hard to convince her otherwise because we are assuming a heritage that doesn't belong to us, but we BELIEVE that it does.

Yes, disease played a major role in the destruction of indigenous people, but by far, weapons of mass-destruction (firearms) have played the LARGEST role in the destruction and assimilation of indigenous people in the Americas. Next in line was Religion.

Wow Jazz (#237) that is definitely filled with some truth, though not a lot. it was actually Europeans diseases that devastated the Natives.
I'd like to see you persuade the black lady I work with who traced her heritage back to the boat she came off of, that she's really a Native American.
Also, please explain to me the vastly different physical characteristics from 'modern african americans' and native americans and why those characteristics starkly resemble that of Africans?
and so you know, stating what I learned in African studies and throwing someones statements in there face is not bragging. I never said blacks were more dominant than whites because we humped on them. I simply made an analogy to demonstrate the ignorance of stating blacks dominate all other races.
Maybe you two should get together and have a superiority symposium.
Oh, and if the Eagles were worth discussing, I would.

What year did the first generations of Africans come to America? You ARE bragging about slavery and European dominance. If it wasn't for Marco Polo stealing Chinese gunpowder, bringing it back to Europe, and Europe developing gunpowder and metal (iron) into weapons of mass destruction, Euro-Americans would STILL be in Europe under Papal and Monarchal DOMINANCE!!

So don't act like you know something, when you DON'T!! Africans were never brought to the North Americas as slaves!! The English industrialists (imperialists) colonized the indigenous people of the North Americas, who happened to be our ancestors into slavery!! You have NEVER heard of an African coming to America, talking about his long lost brothers in slavery in America!!

It is a LIE!! There were no Africans brought to North America in CHAINS!! There were only Dark-brown to brownish red people here, that Columbus called Indians!! Today, these people's descendant's, (today called Negroes, black American people, and African-Americans) are assimilating in the U.S. as African-Americans and living as immigrants in their own homeland, (the Continent of America, formerly known as the Americas, now today called the United States)!!

Europeans came to America, with their guns and religion, and devestated the indigenous people, stripping them of their language, origin, heritage, culture, and customs; enslaved their grandmothers, and renamed them Negroes!! We were not brought from ANYWHERE and enslaved, OUR ancient grandmothers were enslaved, and we were born in slavery!! Today we are free, by virtue of the 14th amendment, a Euro-American priviledge that can be changed or taken away OUTRIGHT, at any time!! It has already been changed, from the 14th amendment into CIVIL RIGHTS!!! Civil Rights are not true rights, instead; they are no more than priviledges that can be changed, altered, or TAKEN AWAY OUTRIGHT!!

So, leave history out of this forum, this is not the forum for this, this is a sports forum, talking about the Philadelphia Eagles!! Do you want to talk some football???

LEANDRA (#215)My point was that if it was "the black gene" that was making you so dominant as you proposed, then Africa would be the model of civilization. Since you insisted on claiming your blackness makes you better than other folk, I propose it might not be the African part of African American that gives you a dominant character. After all, if your american ancestors were so powerful they wouldn't have been beaten and sold as slaves by there african brothers. That's right, most slaves sold were sold BY OTHER AFRICANS, not captured my Europeans. Again, I'm not justifying slavery, or even implying some kind of inferiority of black folk. I am simply saying you're a typical racist idiot for implying blacks are better.
And by the way, I know several Africans (i.e. 1st generation off the boat) and would love to visit their homeland and experience their culture.

What were the fans in Philly giving Vick a standing O for yesterday? Being a liar? A dope smoker? A dog killer? A coward? Complaining about not being a starter? A convicted felon? Or were they just trying to keep him from giving them the finger as he has done to Falcon fans in the past? Please let me know.

With every post these Vick HATERS take ignorance to a new low!! Why don't they just move on with their lives? They're not changing anything, or anybody!! If Vick is so bad, why do you have sink to his level by talking about him?

Everyone one of you that Vick has changed, you're doing all this talking about Vick, but what has Vick said about you? How many of you have been attacked by Vick? You show the world that the problem is not with Vick, but with yourselves!!

Your posts show that you are some very lonely, and sickening people. The dogs that you claim that you are defending, wouldn't even want to be around you!!

after sunday's game it looks like VICK is still a JOKE. he will need 2 or 3 years to learn Reid's offense., philly should just keep Mc Nabb, Kolb, and garcia and let Vick go interview with another team. he is more than rusty and he has never had the smarts to learn an offense quickly. he appears to bring a NOVELTY act to the team and the fans but other than that he does'nt have the skills or the smarts to contribute this season . perhaps he can get some work on special teams - returning punts or kick offs. After all the hoopla about letting him have yet another chance it seems that this is just the nfl trying to take care of one of their own, regardless of what the fans think
