Rodgers’ long throws lead Packers over Rams

ST. LOUIS (AP)—Aaron Rodgers(notes) stayed on his feet. The St. Louis Rams went down again.

Rodgers threw two touchdown passes and ran for another Sunday, and the Green Bay Packers sent the Rams to their 13th straight loss—now the longest streak in the NFL—with a 36-17 victory.

Rodgers was 13 for 23 for 269 yards and hit on three long passes in the first road game of the season for Green Bay (2-1).

After being sacked a league-high 10 times in the first two games and playing behind a patchwork offensive line, Rodgers was sacked just twice, both times in the first quarter by Leonard Little(notes).

“They really gave me some time,” Rodgers said of his linemen. “I was able to move in the pocket.”

The Rams (0-3) have lost 30 of 35 since the start of the 2007 season. With Detroit’s 19-14 win over Washington ending the Lions’ 19-game skid, St. Louis’ losing streak is now the longest.

Rodgers and Greg Jennings(notes) hooked up on passes of 50 and 53 yards that set up touchdowns for Green Bay. Rodgers had a 46-yard pass to Donald Driver(notes) that set up another score, and he scored on a 4-yard run.

“It’s the big plays on defense that kill you and the turnovers—we didn’t get any takeaways,” Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said after his first home game since taking over as coach.

Jennings’ two catches were all he had, but they combined for a 103 yards. Driver had four catches for 95 yards and a touchdown. Ryan Grant(notes) carried 26 times for 99 yards.

“Big plays equal points in this league,” Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. “We say it every week. It was evident today.

“We have the ability to play that way.”

Rodgers said the Packers took advantage of man-to-man coverage on Jennings and Driver.

“If they are in press coverage on Driver and Jennings, we’re going to take our shots,” he said. “I was able to put the ball in the spot.”

Kyle Boller(notes), who played three quarters after Marc Bulger(notes) bruised his shoulder, was 16 for 31 for 164 yards, two touchdowns and an interception for St. Louis. Steven Jackson carried 27 times for 117 yards and had five catches for 46 yards.

Bulger was 3 for 4 for 23 yards before suffering the bruise on a sack late in the first quarter.

Sloppy play put the Rams in an early hole, with Green Bay’s Mason Crosby(notes) kicking first-quarter field goals of 48, 38 and 25 yards. The first was set up by a blocked field goal, the second by Aaron Kampman’s(notes) sack of Bulger at the St. Louis 15—apparently the play on which Bulger was hurt—and the third on Jackson’s fumble at the St. Louis 11 on the first play of the next possession.

The Packers made it 16-0 in the second quarter, the key play Rodgers’ long pass to Driver to the St. Louis 30. Fullback John Kuhn(notes) scored three plays later on a 1-yard run.

Boller replaced Bulger and gave life to the Rams, who had scored just seven points in the previous two games. He threw second-quarter touchdown passes of 16 and 19 yards to backup tight end Daniel Fells(notes).

Sandwiched between those scores was another Green Bay touchdown on a 21-yard pass from Rodgers to Driver, set up by a 50-yard pass to Jennings.

The Rams got within six on Josh Brown’s(notes) 53-yard third quarter field goal, but Rodgers and Jennings combined for a 53-yard pass play early in the fourth quarter, and Rodgers ran untouched from the 4 four plays later to make it 29-17.

“That is what good teams do when they are challenged, they respond and we were able to do that today,” Kampman said.

After an interception, Green Bay scored on Rodgers’ 10-yard pass to Kuhn late in the fourth quarter.

^NOTES: The sellout crowd appeared to be made up largely of Rams fans, unlike the last time the teams met here in 2007, when the mix was closer to 50-50. … Spagnuolo said further evaluation will be needed before he knows if Bulger, WR Laurent Robinson(notes) (ankle) and S James Butler(notes) (knee) will miss any time. … The Rams retired the No. 75 of Los Angeles Rams great Deacon Jones in a ceremony prior to the game.

David W C, L.A. is not a sports town. Its a winners town Us so-cals were spoiled rotten to the core because of the 80's lakers & john wooden's bruins. We don't want the rams back anyway. Everybody was glad when they were run outta town. Rams didn't care about winning, owner drove the fans away into the arms of Frisco & Dallas in the 90's. The ones who were not on their bandwagon were more into the Raiders than the Rams. But the Raiders stopped living up to the commitment to excellence motto after SB 18. Its better to have no team than a team who sucks & don't try hard enuff to win.

    Dan G,
You're welcome. Have a nice time looking for a QB in 1 year maybe 2 while GB will have one solidly entrenched. Btw, your statement is unfair because Rodgers has started for just one year.

How many super bowl runs does Rodgers have? I will say zero.

    Thanks for Favre!

    d-dawg,
Your Vikings have a QB for 1 maybe 2 years. The Packers have a QB for the next 10 if Rodgers stays healthy. GB had to let Favre go because they would have lost Rodgers to free agency.

Come on Vikqueens Fans you can't be this blindly stupid. ( oh wait your Vikqueens fans ) I mean you really think that a 40 year old QB can lead you to the superbowl. Let take a trip back in time shall we, lets see oh here is Brett Favre throwing 6 picks against the rams in the play-offs, Lets see here is Favre throwing some more picks to the Falcons and lsoing the first playoff game in Lambeau Fields amazing history, oh look there he is throwing a pick in OT against the Giants. You see the pattern right well just in case you don't ( I mean after all I am talking to Vikqueens fans ) HE IS A CHOKE ARTIST! I would be more stoked about that WR who caught that pass. Look at the stats Favre is great in the first few weeks, and then the strain of a full season catches up with his tired old bones and he starts to get senile and throw to the other team just so he can take a breather on the sidelines. But the more your hopes get higher the more fun it will be to hear what your excuses are for falling flat on your a.sses. Come back to reality soon the real world is starting to miss it's supply of retards.

Packers have an easy schedule? NFC central is a tough division (for a change) so I don't see how that's so.

    Hey Tom B
"i have totally lost all respect for rodgers. first of all you are playing against what could only be described as the worst team in nfl history. then you run the ball and run out of bounds like a big pu$$y and then come back on the field and signal a first down as if you did something great"

If I'm not mistaking that was a drive saving scramble, lets see your fatass take a hit instead of running out of bounds. Plus the last time your QB Scrambled was when his Prostate flared up and he had to run to the bathroom.

    GO PACK GO

OK Vikqueens Fans their only loss was to Cincy who just happen to beat the World Champs. Hmm. And correct me if I'm wrong didn't AP lead the NFL in Fumbles last year and I could be wrong on this one too but I seem to remember Old man Favre throwing a couple of picks in his career. Plus you forget that come next year and the year after that and that and that we still have an Elite Quarterback and you'll have some Old man who Craps his pants during team meetings because he is too old to find the bathroom. Nice way to spend 25 mil. Good luck ladies you'll need it when the Pack comes knocking on your door.

    GO PACK GO

4 1/2 -- Why can't this team execute a screen pass anymore? I don't even think they attempted one the whole game.

It's really hard as a Packer fan to feel so unappreciative about a lopsided win, but...
    1. This is still a big-play defense in two directions. Three take-aways but two give-backs in touchdown drives that just should not happen against a second-string quarterback on one of the worst teams in the league. Like last year's defense, regardless of 3-4 or 4-3, get used to rushers going for one hundred-plus yards.
    2. The two early turnovers could have easily gone the other way. (The Packers were especially lucky that the fumble counted even though forward progress was stopped.) Turnovers that deep in the oppenent's territory have to turn into six points--not just field goals.
    3. Rodgers is realizing that he has to be his own running game on offense. (Note: he leads the league in yards rushing for a quarterback--and not by choice.) When his receivers are deep and the blocking breaks down, he's seeing that room from the line of scrimmage to the secondary, and he's running to daylight. Hey--yards are yards.
    4. I guess when it counted, it happened. I'm not sure how Grant nearly got one hundred yards, but at least in the fourth quarter he ran well enough to take several minutes off the clock--much better than one and two yard gains earlier in the game that led to three-and-out.
    5. Poor O-line performance and porous defensive performance could mean that next week's game against the Vikings could be over by halftime. It's a good thing that Minnesota has its own baffling woes too.

The Vikings should have swept the pack! Didn't happen despite the Vikings being better on both sides of the ball in BOTH games.

Here we go again..... sell the team to an owner who will do whatever it takes to put a competitive team on the field. They need a QB, 2LB's who can tackle and at least 2 DB's who can stay with anyone other than a HS reciever. We are headed for a 2-14 season with the distinct possibility that we will eclipse the Lions record. :(

hey dan g, the pack should have swept the vikings last year, it should of been back to back sweeps. mason crosby missed a game winning field goal in minnesota. the defense is MUCH better this year.cincy should be 3-0 as i predicted, so the loss to them isnt a big deal, we shoulda won that game bad clock management

Why would the Rams go move to LA. they didnt support them the 1st time. What a joke the 2nd biggest city in the country and cant even keep a football team! They would probably go to Anchorage Alaska before they go back to LA.
