Broncos beat Raiders 23-3 for 3-0 start

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)—Kyle Orton(notes), Josh McDaniels and a newfound dominant defense have quieted all the talk of offseason disfunction in Denver with a 3-0 start.

Orton threw a touchdown pass to Brandon Marshall(notes), the defense kept a second straight opponent out of the end zone and the Broncos overwhelmed the Oakland Raiders 23-3 Sunday.

“We’re happy with where we’re at, 3-0,” Orton said. “We’ve been improving every single week.”

The performance to start the season is a far cry from the offseason. McDaniels caused an immediate stir when he was hired to replace the fired Mike Shanahan as coach in Denver last offseason. He alienated Pro Bowl quarterback Jay Cutler(notes) before trading him to Chicago for Orton, then suspended Marshall in the preseason.

But once the season started, things couldn’t have gone much better for the Broncos. They capitalized on a lucky bounce to win the opener at Cincinnati and followed that with convincing wins over Cleveland and Oakland (1-2).

“There’s no vindication because there’s nothing to be vindicated about,” McDaniels said.

The schedule gets considerably tougher starting next week against Dallas, but the Broncos have to be pleased with where they stand now.

Rookie Knowshon Moreno(notes) ran for 90 yards and a score and Correll Buckhalter(notes) added 108 yards on 14 carries for the Broncos. Matt Prater(notes) added three field goals as Denver won its AFC West opener for a 10th straight year.

Orton again played mistake-free football, going 13 for 23 for 157 yards. He has not thrown an interception in three games, quite a change from the flashier Cutler, who made more big plays last season but also more mistakes with 18 interceptions.

“I thought it was a clean game,” Orton said. “We got off to a good start, no turnovers again and we made plays in the passing game when we needed to. That’s kind of the formula we wanted to take into this week and we executed it.”

The Broncos have committed just one offensive turnover all season, and even that didn’t end up hurting them. Two plays after Buckhalter fumbled deep in Denver territory, Darren McFadden(notes) gave it right back to Denver with a fumble of his own.

That recovery by Brian Dawkins(notes) was just one of many big plays from coordinator Mike Nolan’s defense. The Broncos have allowed just 16 points all season, getting six sacks from Elvis Dumervil(notes) the past two weeks.

The Raiders offense looked inept for a second straight week and this time the defense couldn’t keep Oakland in the game long enough for JaMarcus Russell(notes) to steal one at the end, as he did last week in Kansas City.

The Raiders were held to 137 yards, their second straight week with less than 200 yards of offense. This is just the third time since the start of the 1993 season that Oakland has put together back-to-back games like that, with the other two coming in 2006.

“There’s some glaring problems that need to be fixed, in all phases of the game,” Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha(notes) said. “So I don’t think we have quite a read on who we are. And that’s concerning, because at this point you want to know what type of team you are.”

Russell threw two first-quarter interceptions and was the target of boos all afternoon from the frustrated Raiders fans who bothered to show up. The attendance was 45,602 and the game was blacked out locally.

Russell, who entered the game completing 35.2 percent of his passes, finished 12 for 21 for 61 yards, with only 1 passing yard in the second half.

“I know that the guys in my locker room are behind me,” Russell said. “When the fans get to that, it’s kind of where they seem like they’re fed up. But again, until you come out and play like I know we should and get back on track it will be a different story.”

The Broncos dominated the first half but only had a 13-3 lead to show for it. LaMont Jordan(notes) was stopped on a fourth-and-goal from the 1 to thwart their first drive and Denver had to settle for a field goal after driving inside the 5 late in the half.

The other 10 points were set up by interceptions thrown by Russell. He was picked off by Renaldo Hill(notes) following the goal-line stand when Darrius Heyward-Bey(notes) fell as his feet got caught up with a defender. That set up the 2-yard TD pass to Marshall. The second interception by Andre Goodwin set up a 48-yard field goal by Prater.

NOTES: Rich Gannon broadcast the game for CBS after the Raiders tried to ban their former QB from pregame production meetings. … This was the 100th all-time meeting between AFL rivals, including two playoff games. The Raiders hold a 56-42-2 edge.

OK RiverRats , you’ve proven your point your very old..!!! LMAO..!!!! If your so ancient then you know the history of the Raiders, you know what Al Davis has done for not only the Raiders, but also Football..!!! The MAN deserves more respect then what he gets in this day and age!!! I respect the majority of you seniors..!!! I thought you guys would stick together not bash each other..!!! LOL..!!!
I believe Al has made the right moves this season he just hasn’t found the right coaching staff and hasn’t been patient enough to built chemistry between coaches, players, and team..!!! I can’t blame you old folks for not being patient..!!! LOL..!!!! We have a young team when the chemistry is there we will only improve, we have the talent ..!!!! trust me you still have enough years left to see the Raiders win another few Super Bowls..!!!! RAIDER NATION..!!!!!

Actually I've been a Fan and have been folllowing the Raiders long before you were a load in your old mans balls. Infest negativity ? LOL Yeah, I've seen what's been happening these last 7 years, actually have seen what's been happening since 1960 when they joined the AFL. I have Jersey's old than you. The only person infesting negativity on this team is Al Davis. (I'm not just a Rah Rah lets go we are the best Raider Fan) It does sicken me to watch this team anymore, that's how disgusted I am, any True Raider Fan who's been follwing this team for as long as I have feels the same way I do, or getting close to it, I can guarantee you that. We have been the worst managed team in the league and have been for he past 7 years, You may be ok with that, but I'm not. so screw you A.H.

It may not be a problem much longer if they keep failing to sell seats. If 17,000 seats are left unsold at a home game, that has to be somewhere between a million and a half to 2 million lost revenue. The Raiders just can't win at home, and the fans have had it. The old man is losing money. I seriously think somebody has to declare him incompetent and take over, or the entire franchise may be a goner.

Are you kidding me ? We can have Clark Kent playing QB for this team and we wouldn't be any better. I like Garcia, he has fire and is a good leader but what we need is brains on the sidelines. We are out smarted every play on both offense and defense. We do not have a clue how to move the ball nor stop anyone from moving the ball. We do not know what the other team is doing. We run around like headless chickens every week. It's so disgusting, I can't even watch anymore, it makes me ill.

    Raider Dave, Lcfer, Raider Nation,

    Bulletin:

Jeff Garcia is now available. Eagles released him today to make room for Linebacker Trotter, and was expendable with Vick and McNabb coming back.
I dont think he is any great savior or long term deal, BUT-BUT the man is seventeen cuts above Jafarce-us, and would give the Raiders a shot to win now. Now this is only if the leaders that be can make decisions that require balls to admit you screwed up, and are Raider enough to fix it. Garcia would give them the rest of this year to jockey to get a better QB for the future. Just a FYI

I was at this game and have to say that I am very impressed with Denver and there ability to expliot a teams weaknesses. I tip my hat to the Broncos coaching staff for this. In all the J Rus under-acheivment hype I want to be the one to point out the biggest elephant in the room. MAN-to-MAN DEFENCE and a Defence not adjusting when it has been exploited. The Broncos had the sence to know the Raiders would play man coverage the whole game and you know what they did? They ran trips or double wides w/ tight end. It absolutley exploited the fact that shallow cross cannot be contained in 4-3 man coverage. The Raiders answered by not doing anything. No Stunting, Zone-Blitz, 5 man rush or more... nope. As bad as Russel is right now it is kind of exagerated when you have Recievers not running routes in pricision. Darren McFadden fumbled the ball three times as well. Russels biggest mistake was not connecting with Fullback on the play-action pass right before his first interception. If he connected this simple 3 yrd pass it would have been good for 20 yards. He seriously needs his vision checked. In 30 years of watching football I never thought I would see a QB unable to connect on Screens and flare patterns but have such a great concistant intermediate pass. It is mind boggling.

Craig #373,,,,,,I tip my hat to you and your post ! JR is not ready and I dont
know if he will ever be ready . he is the 60 mil. baby and we as fans cannot
control our Qb malady .Yes the rivalry is important to us , also . What would a conference be without 2 or 3 teams close in the standings , roughing it up for
a chance for post season play . Right now the Raider fans have to watch the story unfold . Hopefully this wont take too long . After all ,we Raider are not
use to be down this long .

As for Larry (The Muff ) M.,,,,,Well he is just an angry lil man , literally.
Picture this,,,,,,,,an adult , painted a cute baby blue ,whith a yellow streak
traveling down his back and his feet dangling in mid air , while sittiing at
grandma's computer as if he was a member of the midget Lucha Libra Accociation , mad at the whole football world ! I did try to cheer him up , by
sending him free passes to have his picture taken , on a Burro in Tijuana,,,,,
but that didnt work for the little fella !

I'm new to this "Larry M" thing but it's pretty hilarious. I'm not gonna' lie, I loves me some internet tough talking. It's cute.
On to actual business, I didn't get much past the dopey stuff of people who comment against each other so I apologize if I'm repeating something someone else has already said. I'm from Ft. Collins, life long Broncos fan but I am also a pretty realistic thinking fan(atic)
For one, I apreciate Raider fans' loyalty. Hey Bronco fans, we've been bad before. Maybe not as bad as the Silver and Black look right now, but we never lost faith either. I actually kind of want the Raiders to improve so that the "Rivalry" is actually that again. (I understand Raiders fans are going to pile on the whatever the last however many times you beat us) It hasn't been a real rivalry since Gannon was the QB. I used to get up for the Raiders v. Broncos game. This past Sunday I just hoped no one got injured before the tough 5 game run we've got. It was foregone that we were going to beat the Raiders, I honestly didn't think it was going to be as...well...I thought it would be closer. I think Cable can coach. I think he's bringing back some of that swagger. I think they've got some players who can play. I honestly think all of this is moot if Russell is the QB. I don't like to pile on or whatever, but the guy isn't ready to be a starter. If there is no threat of the pass, teams are just going to load the box. I know they've got young recievers and that they are a part of the problem, but not as large of a problem as JR. It's hard to say, and our opinions mean nothing, but hey Larry M. if you're not playing Playstation I'm pretty sure you can't fight online wich makes your sht talking paint a very DBag picture of your virtual self. I hope your avitar has a sweet faux hawk :)

As an outsider looking in, I have to say that I am very impressed that the true Raider fans are posting intelligent comments on the message board. We are all so tired of the idiots who usually come on here spouting off their BS comments which typically consist of I'll kick your a$$ if you do not agree that the Raiders are the best franchise ever (even though they have been pathetic for a long time) and their brainwashed "Commitment to Excellence" and "In Al We Trust" rhetoric. All they can ever talk about are the 3 dusty, rusty old rings that they have and their lifetime record, completely ignoring the fact that the Raiders have recently been setting records for their futility and seem like they are light years from fielding a competitive product. At least the true Raider fans are finally recognizing what the rest of us have been saying all along about Al Davis destroying the franchise that he brought to glory years ago. The blind allegiance exhibited by the aforementioned idiotic (gang banger / I only like the team for the bad boy image and uniform colors) Raider fans does a great disservice to the true Raider fans (those who followed the team in the 60's, 70's and beyond). Unfortunately, the Raiders will never improve until they pry the team from Al Davis' cold, dead hands. He has his hand in everything that the Raiders do and it is high time that he were held accountable by the poor fans who have been pouring their hearts, souls, time and money into following this organization, regardless of the inferior product that he has been running out there for some time now. I am not a Raider fan, but I am a football fan and I would like nothing more than to see this once proud organization return to its former glory, for the good of the game.
