Romo soars without T.O., Cowboys beat Bucs 34-21

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Tony Romo(notes) and the Dallas Cowboys figure they’ll be fine without Terrell Owens(notes).

Surrounded by a talented supporting cast that includes Roy Williams, Patrick Crayton(notes), Miles Austin(notes) and Jason Witten(notes)—not to mention Marion Barber(notes) and Felix Jones(notes)—it’s easy to understand why.

Romo launched the post-T.O. era Sunday with a career-best 353 yards passing, including three long touchdowns that keyed a 34-21 victory and ruined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ debut under coach Raheem Morris.

“Career-high passing yards? Without T.O.?,” Williams asked, laughing before turning serious.

“No, it’s good. It’s good for him. It’s good for this team,” Owens’ replacement added. “It was a team effort. Everybody contributed.”

Austin avoided two tacklers on the sideline to score on a 42-yard reception just before halftime and Williams streaked through a mistake-prone secondary on a 66-yard TD play early in the third quarter.

Romo teamed with Patrick Crayton, who had four catches for 135 yards, on the longest completion of the quarterback’s career—80 yards—for a fourth-quarter TD that thwarted any realistic hopes for a Tampa Bay comeback.

“They are playmakers, and we knew that going in,” coach Wade Phillips said. “But until you do it, the naysayers are going to say: `Hey. You don’t have this or that.’ But I think we do.”

Tampa Bay’s Byron Leftwich(notes) completed 25 of 41 passes for 276 yards and no interceptions, but took a beating from a relentless pass rush once Romo put the Cowboys in control.

Cadillac Williams and Derrick Ward(notes) each scored on 1-yard runs for the Bucs, who rushed for 174 yards but eventually had to abandon the running game.

“Obviously, we’re disappointed,” said Morris, who at 33 is the NFL’s youngest head coach. “But there were a lot of good things on offense.”

Cadillac Williams, back after having knee surgery twice in 15 months, finished with 97 yards on 13 carries. Ward ran for 62 yards on 12 attempts and was the catalyst on a long second-half drive that briefly put the Bucs back in the game.

Both teams are hoping to rebound this year from December collapses that cost them playoffs berths last season.

The Cowboys lost three of four down the stretch to finish 9-7, and the Bucs lost four straight after a 9-3 start and fired coach Jon Gruden, replacing him with Morris.

Dallas’ biggest offseason move was getting rid of Owens and making Roy Williams the lead receiver, a role he’s excited about after spending the first 5 1/2 years of his career in Detroit and struggling in Owens’ shadow after being obtained from the Lions at the trade deadline last season.

Romo completed his first two passes to the 6-foot-3, 215-pound Williams, but the duo remained relatively quiet until the receiver’s big third-quarter catch put the Cowboys up 20-7.

Romo, who has thrown for eight TDs and no interceptions in two career games against Tampa Bay, finished 16 of 27 and improved to 8-1 in September starts. Williams had three receptions for 86 yards.

“You don’t think about yards. You’re not judged off of yards,” said Romo, who has a franchise-best 17 300-yard games. “You’re judged off of winning and losing at this position.”

Leftwich wasn’t sacked by a defense led by DeMarcus Ware(notes), however he did take several hard shots in the fourth quarter. The seventh-year pro led an 11-play, 84-yard drive that Ward capped with his TD that trimmed Tampa Bay’s deficit to 20-14 with 13:45 remaining.

Two plays later, Romo found Crayton wide open up the right sideline, and the receiver easily outran Piscitelli and Jermaine Phillips(notes) to restore the Cowboys’ 13-point lead.

“We had our chances. The final score is definitely not indicative of how good we played at times. Those big plays absolutely destroy you football team,” Ronde Barber(notes) said.

Barber’s 6-yard TD run, set up by Romo’s 44-yard completion to Crayton, finished Dallas’ scoring.

The Bucs marched 74 yards in the closing minutes to score on Leftwich’s 2-yard pass to Kellen Winslow(notes). By that time, most of the announced crowd of 63,806 had cleared the stadium, leaving big pockets of Dallas fans in their seats.

NOTES: Ware left briefly after being hit in the head on Tampa Bay’s third offensive play. He returned the next series. … Bucs PK Mike Nugent(notes) had a 38-yard field goal attempt blocked, then missed a 46-yarder. … Cowboys S Gerald Sensabaugh(notes) left with sore ribs after a fourth-quarter collision with Bucs receiver Michael Clayton(notes).

This loss, and the subsequent 15 following losses due to come to the Bucs are karma in motion. Karma in motion for the classless way the Bucs threw Derek Brooks(#55), the greatest player in the history of the franchise, in the dirty, filthy, mud without so much as a simple thank you. ( or to be realistic, an opportunity to allow Brooks to retire/and or/resign as a Buc.) This speaks loudly of the lack of class and loyalty this rapidly declining organization displays. That's right folks, look at Detroit last year, 0-16, and well deserved. The Tampa Bay Bucs of 09-10, are well on their way to a very similar fate endured by the Detroit Lions of 08-09. Hey, at least the tickets'll be cheap and I'll be able to journey on over to RayJ in Tampa and wildly root for for whomever is facing the Bucs, and be proudly wearing my old #55 D.B. jersey.....................

    Sincerely,
    An X-Buc fan

Chris, people comment on every team w/o being a particular fan of the team. It's called being a football fan. Most teams have a storyline for their season, the Cowboys had the How would Romo do w/o TO?" storyline, which drew my curiosity, considering he had his best game yesterday. And there were Cowboy fans here ragging him, which doesn't really make sense.

The Raiders pull the same, "everyone loves us because even if they're not a fan, they love to hate us", So you have people claiming the Raiders have the best fan base, the Cowboys have it, the Steelers have it. Why it matters? Is it really going to effect how you view the team, how you feel when they win, and most importantly, championships. The goal is to enjoy the root on to the SB, not who's the most popular. Anyone does that, it's not football fans, it's prom queens pretending to be football fans.

The fact that you guy's are even arguing the validity of rather the Dallas Cowboys are America's Team are not states volumes for the later. Nobody in Dallas or even Texas dubbed them America's Team the National press did 30 years ago. And If you want more proof read Forbes magazines latest list of top francises financial worth. the Cowboys were listed as being worth 1.7 Billion with a B... second only to Manchester United.

Chris, it's simple actually. I'm playing with these tools oops, I mean toys. I respect all the NFL teams and players. Some of these tools, when reality is brought forward they go defensive and get ignorant. They can't see past the trees to the forest. So when they bite the line I toy around then net them and throw'em back for the next round.......and they keep biting as you have witnessed. I often ponder why my tax dollars are providing internet and computers to prisons???

Don't quite get the yo yo analogy. If this isn't America's team then why are you guys even in here? They seem to have drawn your attention. Why aren't you commenting on the articles about other teams? Do Cowboy fans go to Steelers websites and talk sh*t? Wouldn't know, I've never been on one other than last year to congratulate you guys on your win and say that I hope we tie that 6 win stat soon, respectfully mind you. Most steeler fans are cool, they show a healthy respect for the boys mixed with a healthy dose of pride in taking the 6 rings first. You should talk to some of them, they would probably tell you that this is the best rivalry in football history. Great game last year that you guys won after possibly one of the best games of the season, and yes it was by far the highest rated in viewership. Proving that these teams have the greatest fans of all.

The Dallas Cowboys are America's Team

Blow hards, fact is the Cowboys and Steelers both have great followings and travel well. Many of us grew up on the fabled doomsday defense and steel curtain glory days. Show some respect, they are both great organizations and their records prove it. I'm a Cowboys fan and so is my daughter, she married much to my chagrin a Steelers fan. Always makes for an interesting Thanksgiving though. We keep it respectful though, it shows maturity and class. Something you guys sorely lack. It's football, talk trash but just being ignorant and ugly doesn't accomplish anything but showing what jack*sses you are.
