SEATTLE (AP)—The feisty, new-look Seahawks of coach Jim Mora attacked on defense during plays—and scrapped after them.
On offense, they showed balance between run and pass, and did a good job of protecting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck(notes).
It was as if 2008 never happened.
St. Louis resembled the same old Rams, who went 2-14 last year and got Steve Spagnuolo his first head coaching job.
Hasselbeck, playing his first game since Thanksgiving Day, overcame two interceptions in his first nine throws Sunday to connect with John Carlson(notes) for two touchdowns in Seattle’s 28-0 romp past the Rams.
Hasselbeck, who missed nine games last season with a bad back, finished 25 of 36 for 279 yards passing, his most for an opener.
Seattle’s first shutout in almost two years was its ninth consecutive win over its division rivals. It was also Seattle’s biggest win to begin a season since a 38-0 victory over Philadelphia in 1998.
“The whole offseason, they said our team was soft,” said rookie outside linebacker Aaron Curry(notes), the fourth overall pick who scuffled repeatedly with Rams running back Steven Jackson. “We’ve got to change our image.”
Mora was smiling after his first game as a head coach since the end of the 2006 season for Atlanta. Nine months ago, the Seahawks were 4-12 for Mike Holmgren.
The former visiting locker room attendant for the Seahawks at the old Kingdome returned to his hometown for a day he said he’d thought of “for a long, long time.”
“It was especially emotional for me, because there is some significance to it. I’d be lying if I told you there wasn’t,” the 47-year-old said. “It was kind of a surreal experience.”
His revived Seahawks took advantage of a rare use of instant replay to cruise over the sloppy, undisciplined Rams, who pushed and shoved their way to 10 penalties. Two of them were personal fouls after plays by offensive lineman Richie Incognito(notes).
“Would you rather us just get our tail kicked and walk back (to the huddle)?” Jackson said. “You saw some fight in this team.”
Yet St. Louis gained just 247 yards in an effort similar to its 38-3 loss against Philadelphia that opened last season.
“Yeah, I’m not going there,” said Spagnuolo, who was the Giants’ defensive coordinator at the time.
The game’s most decisive—and weirdest—play came late in the first half. Seattle’s Olindo Mare(notes) struck a 49-yard field goal try low. C.J. Ah You(notes) blocked it, and three other Rams could have. Quincy Butler(notes) scooped the ball and ran 49 yards for an apparent touchdown.
As the Rams were about to snap for the tying extra point, referee Pete Morelli announced the booth officials had called for a review—for whether St. Louis had 12 men on the field.
Turns out, they did. The Rams’ sideline had almost no reaction to the rare reversal. Three plays later, Hasselbeck found Nate Burleson(notes) for a 12-yard touchdown. Instead of 7-7 at halftime, Seattle led 14-0.
The Rams never recovered.
“They count (players) every play, just in case that foul is called,” Morelli said of the replay officials.
The issue of giving replay officials authority to review such plays grew after an infamous incident involving former Steelers coach Bill Cowher in 1995, four years before the current replay system began. The late referee Gordon McCarter incorrectly called Pittsburgh for 12 men on the field during a game against Minnesota. Cowher was fined for comically stuffing into McCarter’s pocket a photo from the press box showing 11 Steelers on the field.

Spags and front office changes could turn things around, especially with younger, hungrier players.
Don't forget the Rams have $20+ million in dead money from busts like Hill, Bennett, Pickett, Chillar, & Kennedy.
It's a uphill challenge but I do remember going 4-12 to Super Bowl winners in 99. Hopefully we (Rams) can stay competitive and the worm is turning for the better and it will take some time.
It's nice to see us play with some heart instead of giving up and I give Spags credit for that. Hawks are underrated as are the 9érs but the curse of Fitz on Madden cover and Super Bowl losers will be too much to overcome. Maybe we can sneak into 3rd in our division, but that's wishful thinking.
Hopefully we will get a good draft pick (not a 1st round bust) that can count in '10 draft.
Hang in there Rams fans, we have better days ahead.
Cardinal fans will have a chance to see a World Series contender play in the baseball playoffs.

ive been a seahawk fan my whole life. fact matt is the best QB seattle has ever had, he is also better than every QB except kurt in the NFC West. he does get hurt to much but if he stays healthy this year seattle will be good. another fact we have the best set of reciever this year than we have ever had. i think our RB's suck but they will do decent. if our Deffense is just average this year we have a chance. i dont think we can beat the giants, or minnesota in the playoffs though. predictions seahawks 10-6. 49ers 7-9, cardinals 6-10, rams 2-14.

Mike teel is a great QB, better then seneca.
If beck gets hurt, Teel will just get a jumpstart, And although he prob wont be succesful in this scenario the year following he will kill.
The hawks need to worry about Walter Jones replacement, even though we manage well without him.

Admittedly, the Rams aren't a terrible threat. But if you're a good team you have to handily beat a bad team to still prove your worth. Seattle did just that. Just as New Orleans did with Detroit. Just as the Chargers should against Oakland tonight.

You are obviously a loser because you care about other people opinions of their teams. Who cares? Let us Hawks fans be happy and keep the douche bagary to yourself. The season is young and nobody is predicting a superbowl championship. But 28-0 in the opener is pretty.....pretty.......pretty good against any NFL team. Especially when we won 4 games last year. We WILL make the playoffs because our division is garbage and who knows what will happen after that. But we have the luxury of not needing a championship for a successful season. So live your life and don't be concerned with other people. You just make yourself look petty and self conscious.

You guys make me laugh with your dellusions of grandeur.
The freakin Lions, Browns or Bengals could probably beat this Ram team or the one from last year. You guys have proven only that you don't have the worst team in the league.
Win just ONE superbowl, then I'll listen to your dellsuions. Until then you guys are nothing more than an inept middle of the road franchise that can't win when it matters(January). You guys are seriously freakin hilarious, almost as hilarious as listening to ARI Card fans that think they're something special just because they were the first losers last year.
There's only one goal in this sport & that's to win the superbowl, not win a division or conference title and then loose a superbowl.
I wish everyone good health.
Have a great week all.

We don't succ because of one weak position, we succ because the drafts of the last decade have overall succed. Bulger has had his brains beat out by an inept O-line the last 5 years.
They've improved the o-line this year, but its probably too late. Theres just too many holes EVERYwhere on this team to have a winner.
Before anyone gets excited about next year when there will likely by no cap, I'd like to warn those dreamers before it gets here:
Atm there is both a max and minimum cap for all NFL teams, next year we will likely have neither and because the owners are expecting to have a lockout in 2011, they'll be looking to save money instead of overspend next year. It has been hinted by insiders that the Rams and about 80% of the rest of the NFL will try to get their player salaries down to 80 mill next year so they can save up some cash for the 2011 lockout.
The rams aren't going to get any better anytime soon. I feel sorry for Spags, he actually seems like a good guy & didn't deserve this mess. Then again neither do us fans.
