49ers beat Arizona 20-16 with late 80-yard drive

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP)—The NFC championship banner was freshly hanging from the stadium rafters. The offense that helped Arizona win it was rarely on display.

San Francisco’s, on the other hand, showed up just enough.

The 49ers went three-and-out on five of their six second-half possessions on Sunday, but Shaun Hill(notes) directed a masterful 15-play, 80-yard drive on the other. His 3-yard touchdown pass to Frank Gore(notes) with 7:26 to play was the difference in the 49ers’ 20-16 victory over the Cardinals.

“It wasn’t anything necessarily that I said,” Hill said. “The whole unit was saying the same thing: ‘Hey, it’s time to go.”’

The Cardinals looked a lot like the team that went 0-4 in the preseason and not much, at least on offense, like the one that won three playoff games before a near-miss against Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl just a few months ago.

“We’re just not meshing,” said Kurt Warner(notes), who threw two interceptions and faced a fierce pass rush much of the afternoon. “We never seem to get into a rhythm. There always seems to be something to stop us.”

The 49ers, who endured a brutal training camp under coach Mike Singletary, gave the coach a victory in his first opener after taking over for the fired Mike Nolan seven games into last season. It was Arizona’s first loss to an NFC foe in two seasons.

“To come in their backyard, after everything they’ve accomplished, we knew it was going to be a tremendous challenge,” Singletary said.

For the seventh time in the last eight meetings between the teams, the final margin was seven points or less.

Arizona rallied from 10 points down to go up 16-13 on Neil Rackers’(notes) 44-yard field goal with 14:52 to play, but the 49ers regained control with a drive that used up nearly half of the final quarter.

“We’re definitely too good to be having these kind of performances,” the Cardinals’ Larry Fitzgerald(notes) said.

The Cardinals held Gore to 30 yards in 22 carries and sacked Hill four times, but Arizona committed 12 penalties for 82 yards and had its pass protection break down at crucial times.

“The one thing I want to say for us is that you can’t have penalties, you can’t have mistakes and expect to win,” Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said.

After the 49ers had to punt from their 1 late in the game, the Cardinals had first down at the San Francisco 39.

But a false-start penalty and a holding call pushed Arizona back 15 yards and the threat ended when Warner was leveled by Justin Smith(notes) as he threw on fourth-and-5 at the San Francisco 33 with 1:51 to play.

“I’m really most upset by getting the ball back in the fourth quarter in the plus territory and going back 15 yards,” Whisenhunt said. “That’s horrible. That’s unacceptable, and it’s what causes you to lose football games. I said to the team afterward, guys that make penalties are not going to play.”

Arizona had it once more, this time at the 46 at the finish, but another fierce rush by Smith forced Warner’s fumble as the game ended.

Hill completed 18 of 31 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown and wasn’t intercepted. Warner was 26 of 44 for 288 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions.

Arizona’s Tim Hightower(notes) caught 12 passes for 121 yards, the second-most receptions by a running back in Cardinals history. Fitzgerald, who didn’t make a catch until the final seconds of the first half, had six for 71 yards. Anquan Boldin(notes), playing despite a sore hamstring, caught one for five yards.

Arizona was without its No. 3 receiver Steve Breaston(notes) because of a sprained kneecap.

The 49ers went three-and-out on five of their six possessions in the second half.

But one drive was a doozy.

“We just moved the chains,” Hill said. “I don’t believe we got any big plays on it, just executing and moving the change.”

After the Cardinals had scored 13 points in a row to take the lead, Hill drove the team downfield, converting four third-down opportunities in the process, two on passes to the venerable Isaac Bruce(notes), who had a 50-yard catch in the first half.

On third-and-goal at the 3, the 49ers sent Gore out on the flat and no one followed him. He caught the short pass and scored with no one near him.

“We made a play here, a play there, and we won,” Gore said.

NOTES: The record for catches by a Cardinals running back is 13 by Larry Centers against St. Louis in 1996. … The two teams opened the season against each other for the fourth straight time. … San Francisco’s Joe Nedney(notes) kicked a 50-yard field goal, making him 14 of 30 from 50 or longer in his career.

JamesJ: Thank you. I have been wondering why no one is mentioning that, especially given how Arizona's last game (the Super Bowl) ended prematurely as well. Let me be clear...I am a die-hard 49ers fan. I remember throwing things out the window of my dorm room the year SF lost to Atlanta on a last-second Hail Mary pass which eventually led to them being the first 10 win team to not make the playoffs.

That being said, as far as I can tell Arizona got screwed. The ball was CLEARLY out of bounds with about 1.5 seconds left on the clock after Warner's sack/fumble. It should have been their ball on 3rd down, which is still a longshot, but with their receivers, not impossible. And that's ignoring the fact that the 49ers came on the field before the ball even rolled out, which should have been a penalty preventing the end of the game as well.

Hahahahaha! What now Hill bashers! Looks like this so called journey man beat the defending NFC champions. Oh, let me gues its another one of those wins against bad teams. I guess every time HIll wins its because its a bad team. I see people are bashing hill for his third quarter play, ignoring his play in the fourth quarter. Im sorry but ill take a great fourth quarter over a third quarter any day. And for those attacking hill for those three and outs, he was forced to HAND THE BALL OFF EVERY D_MB TIME. They even handed off the ball on third and nine, so how is was that hills fault. Yes, he made a few careless throws but you dont get a passer rating of 89 by playing terrible. Face it, the only reason people are attacking him is because he's not throwing the deep throws (even that he accomplished with a 50 yard pass to bruce). Instead he's running the clock, keeping the other team's offense off the field and still getting the same results as a long touchdown pass.

People... this is one game but showed us that promise that the Niners are better this year. The O-line has a lot of work to do to get the running game going. The Def line finally woke up and showed life. Willis is again a BEAST! Who needs Craptree when you have Bruce, Morgan, Davis and Battle. Craptree is now so way behind, he'll only bring disruption to the game and core. GO NINERS!

yes they won the game but Hill played almost cost them he missed wide open rececivers like gore and others. The play calling was stuck on run , the line does pass block well.Look at this game as LUCKY with a big L. Because the Def...was very good. I see rest of nfl teams stacking it all day on 49ers . P.S. That was indeed a close and thrilling 4th quarter to say the least - being a Niners fan last year meant sitting on pins and needles for the last few minutes and just waiting for the loss. A win, especially against the Wonderboy Warner Cardinals, was amazing. I'll grant that Gore, Hill, and the rest of the offense company delivered in the clutch again, but those 3 and outs were getting WAY too predictable watching online - keep bashing with the run game, but be a little more innovative in doing so. And Hill had better start paying attention to passing situations more - not to give him a minor break this time - he's our starter now, and hopefully just this game will be enough of a boost for him to wake up. As for the defense...genius. I loved watching Warner end up on his arse time and again. Looking forward to Seahawks next week, and how the Cards fare in Jacksonville. A Candlestick victory with a decent point margin and another poor Arizona showing may be a sign that the 49er drought is finally ending. Just keep pounding Singletary, and the troops in red will respond. GO 49ERS!

The 49ers are going to have a lot of trouble beating the Vikings if they can't get their running game going. Hill is not a QB who can carry the team every game.

It might be a moot point now because the Cards did not protest it but... Did anyone notice at the end of the game yesterday that Warner fumbled during the sack and it was a live football? The niners sideline ran on the field during the play as well as the fact that the ball rolled out of bounds with 1 second on the clock. This should have been a 15 yard penalty from the spot where the ball went out of bounds. This is up to the officals and more importantly Wizenhunt to lobby for one more shot. Unless the play was whistled dead to begin with of course.

Did any niner fans actually watch the last drive..... Hill was anythnng but masterful. In the final scoring play drive within ten yards. Hill missed gore wide open in the flat on first and second down. The coach had to call a timeout and call hill over to tell him gore was wide open twice. And the dumb cards let the same exact play go again and hill hit gore. Hill is not solid and has a lot of work to do in going throughthe passing checkdowns. He seems a little flustered out there, almost like his anxious. He needs that poise. The niners off. was lacking the whole game. We shouldve won by more than 14 the way the cards played. Clements finally is playing with heart and is one of the best at db in the game. Give him props.

The Niners play smash mouth defense and Arz had no idea what to do vs the Niners pass rush. If Gore can get on track, Hill looked good and the defense looked great, we will be a team to reckon with. FRISCO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
