Manning throws TD, Umenyiora scores in 23-17 win

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP)—The New York Giants didn’t find a replacement for Plaxico Burress(notes) in opening defense of their NFC East title.

They added something just as valuable, a healthy Osi Umenyiora(notes), and he’s as good ever.

Returning from a major knee injury that wiped out his 2008 season, Umenyiora scored on a 37-yard fumble return after knocking a ball loose on a sack in leading the Giants to a 23-17 win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

“It was unbelievable and now all that is in the past,” Umenyiora said after his first meaningful game since the Super Bowl in February 2008. “I can’t even explain it to you, when something like that is taken away from you. Last year I missed it. I was happy I was able to come back in there.”

So were the Giants, who once again had no problem handling the Redskins, even with their addition of $100 million defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth(notes). They swept both games last season and again dominated.

The Giants jumped out to a 17-0 first-half lead and were never threatened by the NFL’s so-called best last-place team.

Eli Manning(notes) threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Mario Manningham(notes) and Lawrence Tynes(notes) added three field goals, including a 45-yarder in the fourth quarter that was set up by an offside penalty by Haynesworth, who stuffed the middle of the line but did little else in his Washington debut.

The game-breaking play was Umenyiora’s second-quarter return. The two-time Pro Bowler beat tackle Chris Samuels(notes) with an outside speed rush, knocked the ball out of Jason Campbell’s(notes) hands and then picked it up and pranced his way to the end zone.

“To be honest, I don’t know what happened,” Umenyiora said. “That’s the way most plays are made. You just go out there and sometimes good things happen. They always get on me about knocking the ball out and not picking it up. When I saw it, I just picked it up.”

“Osi made a great play on the ball,” said Campbell, who was 19 of 26 for 211 yards and an interception. “It’s something you have to understand as a quarterback you have to feel it more or slide up in the pocket.”

Campbell held it too long, and Umenyiora made him and the Redskins pay.

Washington, which trailed all game, drew within 23-17 with 1:30 to play on a 17-yard touchdown pass from Campbell to Chris Cooley(notes). Steve Smith recovered the onside kick and New York ran out the clock.

Washington also got an 8-yard touchdown run from punter Hunter Smith(notes) on a fake field goal late in the first half and a 27-yard field goal by Shaun Suisham(notes) in the third quarter.

“Not only was it a W, but it was against an NFC East opponent,” Umenyiora said. “It was a great game.”

The Giants came into the game wondering whether they could replace Burress and Amani Toomer(notes) at receiver, and whether the defense could dominate under new coordinator Bill Sheridan, who took over when Steve Spagnuolo became the Rams head coach.

There are still questions to be answered with the receivers, especially with top draft pick Hakeem Nicks(notes) spraining his left foot in the second half. However, Manning (20 of 29 for 256) spread the ball around, connecting with Steve Smith six times for 80 yards.

The defense was outstanding, limiting Washington to 272 yards, forcing two turnovers and getting three sacks. Washington’s two touchdowns were on the gadget play and one late one after Tynes kicked his third field goal for a 23-10 lead in the closing minutes.

Tynes’ 28-yard field goal gave New York an early 3-0 lead and Manningham personally stretched it to 10-0 after taking a short pass from Manning. The second-year receiver deked Fred Smoot(notes) at the line of scrimmage, avoided a pushout attempt near the sideline by Andre Carter(notes) at the 20 and stopped short to avoid a tackle by DeAngelo Hall(notes) for his first NFL score.

Washington, which ran itself out of a scoring opportunity on its opening series with an ill-advised gadget play, used one to get on the board with 21 seconds left in the half. Faced with a fourth-and-goal at the Giants 8, coach Jim Zorn went with a fake and it caught New York by surprise, allowing Smith to jog in for a touchdown.

“It was really neat, but it would have been neater had we been able to capitalize and win the game,” Smith said.

Suisham’s short field goal was set up by Hall’s interception of Manning deep in New York territory.

“Not getting seven on that hurt us,” said Clinton Portis(notes), who finished with 62 yards rushing on 16 carries.

^NOTES: Hunter Smith’s touchdown run was the second of his career. He had one with Indianapolis on a fake field goal in 2003. … Giants backup halfback Danny Ware(notes) dislocated his left elbow returning the opening kickoff. He watched the second half wearing a sling. … Manning lost a second-quarter fumble on a play with Carter grabbing his facemask. No call was made. … With Aaron Ross(notes) and Kevin Dockery(notes) out, the Giants played with three cornerbacks. Corey Webster(notes), who got into a scuffle with Santana Moss(notes), had an interception.

todd m measures stats(yards) and how many players they hurt on the other team- it is called moral victories. This MORON made a bid deal about beating the Steelers in a preseason game in which Big Ben did not play. Then he got his rocks off because the Redskunks roughed up Brady in the next game vs. Pats and Drew in last preseason game vs. Jags. Both of them played in the first regular season game- so you didn't hurt them that much. Now he is still talking trash after another loss. As I already told you get prepared to finish dead last in your own division. I just hope for your sake that they can beat the hapless Rams!

Todd M 172, what kind of drugs are you on

Manning's fumble was a facemask, instead of theskins having the ball, the Giants should have the ball on the skins 25.

Deangelo Hall's int was from a lucky tip on a blown coverage

I do not thinkt he Giants were lucky at all

nerxt week is gonna be great. two of the luckiest teams in football play each other. last year dallas jhad about 50 fumbles and only lost 5. last week every fumble went right to the gaints to help them beat the skins. this week i bet when either team fubles it . the ball will go straight up and hit the big tv screen i bet. thats how lucky they are!!!

I am not really sure how anyone can say that this game was close. The Giants thoroughly dominated both sides of the ball. Sure there are a few fluke plays every game. But in all reality the Giants played a solid Redskins team. The Cowboys played a garbage Bucs team. The Giant defense is still not intact fully. Dockery and Boley will hopefully be back this week. Tony Romo will not be lighting this defense up. Truth be told we will likely be on his back most of the game.

I live for this rivalry. Cowboys vs Giants. The Gmen are going to go into Dallas' big new stadium and dominate both sides of the ball for a 27-17 victory.

The thing I notice about Zorn is he has no clue what to do when the ball is inside the 20,. All of you who say Campbell played bad, look at the stats, he outplayed Eli, Eli just has better coaches so he got the win. Eli was throwing the ball 20 yards downfield to WRs who didnt have a defender within 5-7 yards of them. Everytime Cooley or Randle El caught a pass (cause they were the only ones catching them) they either were tackled or had to break a tackle. The thing that gave me the most hope about our QB last night was after he had the fumble he came back and marched the team downfield going 4-4 for 72 yrds on the drive. Then came Zorn and his bogus play calling with the same ole run plan and the BS screen pass to the short side of the field. They started Kelly for the redzone with his 6'4 frame but Zorn did nothing to use it yesterday. Zorn and the DC need to step there coaching skills up. Its sad the Campbell is gonna take the fall with Zorn though, thats really gonna set us back and he will go somewhere else (prolly Carolina) and SHINE. I'm from NC and I hear alot of Panthers fans say they hope we let him go.

    LOL @ 120 f

First of all, Jacobs was in the air when fletcher hit him! Are you freakin KIDDING ME? I could lay out jacobs if he was in mid air...

And wow you scored on us in garbage time and you had a bush league touchdown via a fake punt..

The giants did not play nearly to there potential and guess what? Still good enough by a mile to destroy the skins...

Our defense had 3 starters out not to mention.

Oh and when the giants put their $h!t together...it wont even be a close game. Go back to imagination land where the redskins are good..

    Nuff said.

I Don't know why people keep raving that this game was so close if they had actually watched the game, they could see that the Giants dominated the whole game, and the only reason the redskins scored was because of a sissy trick play and a cheap TD in garbage time. GO GIANTS!!

As a Skinz fan, congrats to the G-Men on their win and the Skinz fans need to listen up. It isn't about Campbell or the O-Line or anything else. I've been following this team for 40 years and it's about coaching here. The staff is out coached each and every week and the game plan is pathetic. When they play a team of equal or better talent, they can bearly put 7 on the board. When they play teams that are inferior, they beat them by a field goal or less. This team has talent, but it isn't gonna get any better with this staff in place. You think it's bad now? They have a schedule that dicates playoffs with their talent, but watch how many games they win. Maybe another 8-8 season at best.

I will admit, the cowboys D aint lookin too good...but if the Giants beat a sorry Deadskin team by only 6 points, there is no way the Gnats can come to Dallas and expect a win.

The G-Women better be prepared for the 'Boys and our explosive offense to light that a$$ up!!!!

Oh and expect SHE-LI manning to be sacked a minimum of 4 times....

Good point Jeff C. The Giants dressed three corners for a game vs. a team that runs the "wuss coast offense," the kid playing in the nickel was an undrafted free agent rookie, and still the Redskins offense did nada. The Giants have the deepest and most talented defense in the league.
