Colts’ defense preserves 14-12 win over Jaguars

INDIANAPOLIS (AP)—Indianapolis spent all offseason trying to fix the defense. Mission accomplished—maybe.

On a day Peyton Manning(notes) tied the franchise record for victories and Jim Caldwell won his NFL debut as a head coach, the game came down to two fourth-quarter defensive stops. The Colts made both of them to preserve Indy’s 14-12 victory over Jacksonville.

“Obviously, the defense played well and came up big at the end,” Caldwell said. “We thought it would be a grind, and it was. I think our team certainly played tough, played hard, played with a lot of energy.”

Now the defense must prove it can continue playing this way.

Caldwell has instilled a tougher attitude and new defensive coordinator Larry Coyer has implemented a more aggressive scheme to take advantage of the Colts’ speed. The changes paid dividends, especially late when pressure forced David Garrard(notes) into poor throws, bad decisions, and finally a four-and-out to end it.

The bulkier defensive line also held up better against an old nemesis, Maurice Jones-Drew(notes), who rushed 21 times for 97 yards and scored Jacksonville’s only touchdown Sunday. He had averaged 6.3 yards per carry in six previous games against the Colts

And it gave Manning win No. 118 as a Colt, tying John Unitas’ franchise record.

“I’ve never felt comfortable with comparisons with him. I think he’s kind of in his own category,” Manning said. “But I am proud of those wins.”

Manning, the three-time MVP, was 28 of 38 for 301 yards and one TD with an interception in the end zone that cost Indy one scoring chance. Joseph Addai’s(notes) fumble deep in Jags territory ended another drive, though he made up for it later in the first half with a 3-yard TD run.

Not exactly picture perfect.

Worse, receiver Anthony Gonzalez(notes) left late in the first quarter with a right knee injury. He ran across the line of scrimmage on a running play, didn’t hit anyone and crumpled to the ground. He did not return, and Caldwell had no update on the injury. Reggie Wayne(notes) made up for it by catching 10 passes for 162 yards, including a 35-yard TD in the third quarter.

“I asked (Rashean) Mathis what happened and he said, ‘I didn’t even touch him (Gonzalez),”’ Manning said. “He has worked so hard in the offseason, I just hope it’s not a season-ending injury.”

Defensively, things went smoother.

The Colts forced Jacksonville to settle for field goals until Jones-Drew finally took a pitch, made a nifty move in the backfield to avoid tacklers and then jogged in for a 7-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter. When Jones-Drew tried to tie it on a 2-point conversion out of the wildcat formation with 11:07 left, the Colts stuffed the middle.

“They just did a great job in the red zone stifling our offense,” Jones-Drew said. “My hat’s off to them. But we have to learn how to finish.”

Otherwise, it was a solid effort.

Jacksonville finished with 228 total yards, and had one last chance to win it—just it did last year on Josh Scobee’s(notes) 51-yard field goal with 4 seconds left.

But the Colts never gave Scobee a chance to get on the field this time.

After running back Donald Brown(notes) couldn’t convert on fourth-and-1 just before the 2-minute warning, Jacksonville took over at its 35 with one timeout.

Garrard started with a 2-yard pass to Jones-Drew, who dropped a pass on second down. Indy then pressured Garrard into back-to-back incompletions, including a desperation fourth-down flip, while being surrounded by Colts.

“I thought, ‘Here we go again, we have a great chance,”’ Garrard said. “You love to be in that situation. We were trying to get the ball to Maurice, but you’ve got to slow those pass rushers down. We did what we could do.”

The Colts’ defense was just better.

NOTES: Jags coach Jack Del Rio said defensive end Reggie Hayward(notes) bruised his shin or thigh late in the game. … Rookie cornerback Derek Cox(notes) had an interesting NFL debut: intercepting Manning, recovering Addai’s fumble and giving up Wayne’s TD. … The Colts played without safety Bob Sanders(notes) (knee) and defensive tackle Ed Johnson(notes), who served a league-imposed one-game suspension. … Garrard was 14 of 28 for 122 yards and Torry Holt(notes) caught five passes for 47 yards in his Jags debut.

You subtract the 2 turnovers, this game would not have been close. Colts are a much better team then the Jags. I like the more aggressive DF. Can't wait to see Sanders back in there. The new WR's did well also. As long as the line stays healthy, we'll be doing just fine. Look out New England and Pittsburg, the Sheriff is back in town.

I enjoyed the game despite both teams struggling in certain areas; it is still early in the season to judge anyone (team) just yet. I get a kick out of the Peyton Manning haters… Why would anyone not enjoy watching him compete? Manning plays hard and is a class act; he never talks trash and respects the game…. WTF? I am a fan of this team (Colts), but I enjoy watching other teams (including Jacksonville). I do not believe I have to hate an opposing player or team to enjoy mine more. Just watch the game and try to have some respect for the sport without trashing someone else.

MJD is the real deal but he was coming off an injury, why not throw a screen pass or two to Jennings and take some pressure off the QB and give MJD a little rest?

The Colts should have won this game 28-12! Peyton and his boys looked better than usual for their first game of the season, since it usually takes a few to get everybody on the same page. To everyone who said the Colts got lucky, check the box score and get back with us. Peyton outgained the entire Jags team 301-228 yards, and if it weren't for a couple turnovers while in scoring position, this game would have been put out of reach in the third quarter, if not earlier. The Pats suck ass, the Jags suck asshats, and the Colts and Steelers are the class of the AFC this season.

    GO COLTS!!!

I posted in the team report a couple of days ago. I'm a Browns fan, but I'm more of a Jags fan. I think that the Jags should go after Derek Anderson. He is overrated, yes, but I think a better fit in the Jags offense. I see Anderson as a Mark Brunell type player and could really help this team out.

Defense was better but offense still not gelling for Colts but lets not jump the bandwagon Jag fans its still early and your defense looked better. The year is young and offense can still get better Holt looked good fit just did'nt get the ball to him much but that had a lot to do with colts defense.

I am a jaquars season ticket holder from day but it will be my last season. they show nothing new. they think one player can win a ball game. every body was at fault. when playton has a bad day the jags has a bad day, they can never take over a game like some of the other teams do sometimes. they run the same plays with the same player.

Whoever said Colts got lucky did not watch this game. The Colts dominated but were sloppy at times. Had they converted more of their chances, this game would not have been close.

Jacksonville plays crummy football offensively and had no business even being in this game.

Why does Garrard still have a job? This guy has done nothing for us lately. Better not be another long season, but as long as this clown is starting I have a bad feeling about it.

Its the first week of the NFL.......it might take a week or two for teams to start to gel and eventually get hot. Give the colts a break........Their D looked a lot better this year than last year and we are still without Bob and Big Ed.

An all of you tards that think Manning is old, sucks, etc.., just remember he was named League MVP for the third time just last year. The only thing we have to worry about right now is our unlucky seasons of the injury plague. If we stay healthy for the most part, than you will see our NFL record of 10+ wins continue and more than likely a divison title.

    GO COLTS!!!!!
