Cutler leads Bears over Broncos in Denver return

DENVER (AP)—Heckled and harassed by a hostile crowd, Jay Cutler(notes) silenced the jeers the best way he knew how—with his powerful right arm.

The Chicago quarterback played the role of villain to perfection in his return to Invesco Field, leading the Bears team to a 27-17 win over the Denver Broncos on Sunday night.

“This isn’t your everyday situation,” Cutler said.

Far from it.

Cutler had a very public spat with new Broncos coach Josh McDaniels after Cutler decided he didn’t want to play for him anymore. The rift came to a halt on April 2 when the Broncos dealt Cutler to Chicago for Kyle Orton(notes) and a handful of picks.

Now, Cutler is more interested in putting the past behind him.

The crowd, though, wasn’t about to let him forget, taunting him the entire game.

“We knew coming into this it was going to be a hostile environment, which was good,” said Cutler, who threw for 144 yards and a touchdown. “It’s good preparation for us.”

The louder he was booed, the more he bore down. That’s what running back Matt Forte(notes) noticed in the huddle.

“He was calm, and kept everyone else calm,” Forte said.

After Cutler led the Bears on a 12-play, 98-yard drive just before halftime, he pumped his fist in exhilaration, almost a “take that” sort of gesture.

So, was it?

“I think any quarterback is going to be happy with that,” Cutler said. “To go 98 yards in this league is hard.”

Not to mention in a place like Denver, where the Pro Bowler once was viewed as the next coming of Hall of Famer John Elway. It certainly made an impression on defensive lineman Tommie Harris(notes).

“Jay is Mr. Consistent,” Harris said. “He looked good out there. We’re just fortunate to have him in our orange and blue.”

Cutler’s performance may make those fans deriding him Sunday wish he was still wearing the Broncos’ orange and blue.

“It went well,” Cutler said of his return. “It was a little bit weird— different locker room, different sideline. But that’s how it goes. I love where I’m at in Chicago. I think we’re heading in the right direction offensively.”

Meanwhile, the Broncos are searching for answers for their lackluster offense. They lost Orton after he cut his right index finger on a helmet late in the second quarter.

Orton immediately looked down at his bloody finger, showed it to the sideline and then trotted off the field. He was taken to the locker room, his night finished.

As for how long he might be out, McDaniels wouldn’t elaborate, saying only “I’m not going to talk about that or the extent of it yet.”

The team already is missing backup Chris Simms(notes) after he sprained his ankle in a preseason game last week at Seattle.

“I’m going to work as hard as I can,” said Orton, who was 12 for 16 for 96 yards before suffering the gash on his finger. “I don’t know how long I will be out, but mentally I will be ready to go and I think physically I will be, too.”

Denver’s sputtering offense only generated Matt Prater’s(notes) 31-yard field goal in the first half. The team also was plagued by penalties (10) and turnovers (2).

With just one preseason game remaining—and the starters not expected to see a lot of time—the Broncos are running out of opportunities to shore up deficiencies.

“There are some things that we have got to get fixed reasonably quickly,” Orton said. “We have got to play better than we have been.”

McDaniels certainly wasn’t pleased with his offense, especially the long-yardage situations.

“Sloppy, certainly,” McDaniels said.

As for Cutler’s return to Denver, McDaniels summed it up succinctly.

“It’s over,” he said.

But he quickly added that wasn’t the focus—just a little extra drama.

“It was a great atmosphere to play in for our football team to try and get ready for the regular season,” McDaniels said. “He did some nice things for them and I’m sure he will have a good year out there in Chicago.”

    Sinking Ship....

Layoff the alcohol and drugs. You're really making me feel sorry for you.

Wow....evidently you have someone else read the posts for you or you're just an ignorant inbred. I AM FROM CHICAGO....not England. I live in Naperville, IL. I am working in England. Do you understand? Born in Chicago, attended Loyola University....lived here all of my life. Working in England temporarily. What a dumb@$*@. Geesh. Total moron if you can't understand that.

You are seriously one of the dumbest individuals I have ever encountered on the internet. You can't even make an argument or debate something without resorting to childish behavior. Forte, as I said before, is a good running back. He is not great. No one player in NFL history can ever be considered GREAT after ONE season. There have been NUMEROUS "one year wonders". I even pointed some of them out for you.

You are seriously one pathetic individual. All three of your last posts did nothing but prove how ignorant you are. Each one of them blasted me for "being from England" which I am not and if you would have read, or comprehended the previous posts, you would have understood that but you are so set on blasting someone that you didn't even bother reading my previous posts in which I have said over and over that I am here working.......not from here.

I seriuosly hope you haven't reproduced yet because our society definitely doesn't need anymore individuals like you in it.

PS......looks like your GREAT RB did a phenomenal job tonight......as well as the Pro Bowl QB Cutler. Points proven......yet I really didn't have to prove anything now that I no of the intellect that I'm dealing with.

If you want to come back with something.....don't make yourself look so pathetic this time. Seriously....it's taking the fun out of this.

Oh I'm sorry you're such an expert because the esteemed Sir Cumguzzler Von Crapper (your country's leader & highest IQ holder at 65) said he watched a football game once & said some bunch of bull@#$% & you swear to it like its the bible! You got everyone on this board there. Go watch your fruity soccer that disgustingly uses football. Another reason England sucks! The gayest sport in the world trying to compare to the NFL! It was an estimation you stupid @#$% Limey! An average of 28 points SUCKS! For any defense in the league. You act as if oh no problem perfect defense. Thats horrible. Newsflash stupid (I guess math isn't something they do in England) an average means yes there were a lot of games at that 28 pt level (awful), a few under (probably like 20 which still sucks as a defensive best) & even ones MORE than 28 at 35-45, you dumbass Limey douche! Go drink tea play cricket & stalk American male actors like your creepy @#$% local countryman John Hurt! Douchebag!

You read a couple of things in your gay BBC paper & say HEY I KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT FOOTBALL! Listen you dumb@#$% Limey we have no use for you. oh....Sinking Ship...

35-45 points a game? Do your homework. It was 28 points a game. 20 (18 INTs / 2 Lost fumbles) by Cutler. How many of those turnovers do you think attributed to points? That's giving the ball back to the other team more than once a game. Is that good? Go back and look at how many of those interceptions were when Denver HAD the lead.

    Let's see...

First.....hellbilly (the name pretty much implies it all) Before you try to slam someone, read my posts. I said I'm currently working in England, not that I'm from here. I sell heart valves and implantable cardiac defibs and am building a team of reps in England. I actually live in, and am from, Chicago but as I stated, I am currently IN England. You didn't even make an argument, nor read my posts, so who is "this stupid"? Pathetic.

Cale...wow.....you're pretty mature aren't you. I had a debate going with an individual and we kept going back and forth, so sure, why wouldn't I come back to see what he had to say. Now in response to your little tidbit of info....I am not going off of just one article. I'm going off of stats, what Ditka said, what Butkus said, what several others have said as well. Cutler has never been a winner, at any level, and for people to all of the sudden believe that he's a "savior" is just plain foolish. Intelligent people usually base things on FACTS. I've even said that while Cutler is an upgrade, he still hasn't proven anything yet. All I've pointed out is exactly what his stats have proven throughout his college career and pro career thus far. So what are you basing your argument on? Wait.......first, what is your argument? Ah....you have none. Go for it.....let's see how intelligent you really are because I'm fairly positive that I can squish that pea brain of yours.

Ahh........and finally, the laughable, Sinking Ship Captain

What's your point? I said that Forte is a good RB. My argument was that he is not a great RB. One year and people are going to say he's great. No player, ever, should receive a claim of GREAT after just one year because you know as well as I do that there have been many one year wonders. We can sit here and debate your claim that Cutler was on horrible defenses his entire career (college and pro) and that's why he's has a losing record. Bottom line is this......did his defenses tell him to turn the ball over as much as he has, or have one of the worst completion percentages on 3rd downs? No. Poor decisions lead to turnovers. An offense is only as good as their defense and vice versa. If an defense is on the field due to turnovers then they're going to tire out and get eaten alive by any offense. What's the number one thing that coaches teach.......ball control. When your offense cannot control the clock, and the ball, it's going to lead to points for the other team. Do I read stats? Obviously you don't read posts because you wouldn't even be asking that question because I've been referring to stats throughout my entire argument. So it's nice to know that you read stats as well but at least I'm interpreting those stats for what they are and once again, just for you, since you obviously did not do your homework and read everything....I said I am "currently" in England but I am from Chicago so before any lame attempt at blasting someone and in the process, making yourself sound even more ignorant, READ. If the words are to tough for you then you might want to seek some help. Great QB? Great RB? Wow......you're hopeful and there's nothing wrong with that. I'm not disillusioned by one Pro Bowl appearance and a rookie RB who is better at a receiver than his true position. As for pulling stats out of my ass......are you referring to the actual stats that each of these players compiled last year because if that's the case then how is that pulling stats out of my ass? Seriously......if you're going to try to insult someone let me give you some advice first. #1) make sure you're not insulting yourself first (read everything - I said I'm from Chicago in a previous post) #2) I'm using all verifiable stats #3) make an actual argument #4) if you're going to claim that these players are great, then define how they're great because ONE season does not define greatness.

How does someone from England even know anything about real football! Not soccer trying to use a tough game for a fruity sport. Go stick to your British lame sports like soccer & cricket & tea time crapping!

Dude by the way, The Couch Slouch SUCKS! I guess Dan Marino was a loser to. He never won a Superbowl. Clearly his 'losing record' is not his fault. Both the Broncos & his college team had the worst defenses. When you're putting up fantastic QB numbers you are doing your job. He doesn't play defense & no one quarterback historically can consistently put up huge numbers week in & week out to over compensate for a Defense allowing 35-45 points on the board every week. Its unrealistic & pretty much the problem Aaron Rodgers is dealing with. The only loser is Couch Slug who obviously didn't take 5 whole minutes to research that. More toilet paper in a newspaper! UGH!

    David V,

Do you read stats? Really at all? Forte is not only a RB but a WR. He had almost 500 yards in receptions (alone) & 1200 rushing yards while Adrian fumbled 9 times to his 1 fumble. I seriously Peterson could ever be a dependable receiver option consistently like Forte. Like ok the Bears going to the Superbowl is laughable? Oh so we should go forfeit the season because some bitter @#$% who likes the Lions says were not good on no viable information? If I recall the Cardinals were called the worst team to make the playoffs & underdogs in every game as were the Giants. Both teams made the Superbowl. The Giants won it & the Cardinals barely lost it. I mean really try watching the game & stop pulling stats out of your ass.

The Bears have a great QB, a great RB, a much improved Defense, although a suspect CB situation still but a lot of talent. This WR BS is blown out way too much by the scumbag media with their toilet paper newspapers. Bennett was never given a fair chance by a moron (Lovey Smith) who let him get 3 chances at a reception widely split over a 16 game season in 08. Yeah there's a great barometer for success, NOT! Hester busted a ton of yards no better no worse than most #2s as it is. So whats the problem? Bennett is Cutler's WR from college & they haven't shown any rust at all. So I don't see why they wouldn't have a shot at playoffs. Then you go from there. One step at a time.

    oh, poor baby Jeremy.

It's over? You win? Jerkoff? What a sad, sad little boy.

I currently live in Bedford, England so before you start assuming something you little twit make sure you know what you are talking about before you make yourself look/sound even more foolish.

All you are doing is making my case for me.
Yes.....there is more than the ypc stat for an elite back but bottom line is that he is a RUNNING back. That's what his position is.....I've never seen a position title called CATCHING back. His PRIMARY job is to RUN the ball.

Abo@#$%ely.....those RBs I mentioned were future hall of famers based on their number of catches out of the backfield and their ability to pick up a blitz. That's what they were drafted for......not their ability to run.

You are making any headway here, in fact you're showing that you have no argument.
Bottom line is this: A RBs is drafted to RUN the ball. The other aspects of his game are called intangibles. A 3.9ypc / 77 yrd/game average is mediocre at best, plain and simple.

Jerkoff.......LOL....I guess my "cliche" in my earlier post was appropriate afterall.

Wow....you have way to much time on your hands......or no real life.

You're going to compare Bettis to Forte? Now that is just sick, and disturbed. What type of running back was Bettis? Slash and Dash, burn ya for an 80 yd breakaway, get on the outside edge and blow past everyone? LMFAO....get real.

    Let's see....
    Natrone Means (3.9 ypc 1350yds, 12td, 40 rec, 235 yds = 1685yds) GREAT RB right?
    Terry Allen (3.9 ypc - 1353 yds, 21td, 32 rec, 194 yds = 1547yds)
Ronald Moore (rookie season 3.9 ypc, 1018 yrd, 9 TDs) Remember him?

The list goes on....don't try to look up stats because what Forte did last year was nothing special. It's not like it hasn't been done before.

No......I never said that I would call him great regardless of what numbers he puts up. Keep reading the posts and you'll see what I was referring to.

I am being consistent. Again.....keep reading. You're not doing yourself any favors by making these comments. Just proving my points for me...........just like the Pace comment. Yes....he had a HOF career, but not based on anything he's going to do with the Bears. Did you see a 5'11" Defensive End/LB blow past him and shove him around like he was your little sister?

Well I hope that Forte can catch passes or Cutler is going to be in a lot of trouble this season......but, I don't know.....for some reason, I'd prefer drafting a RB that can actually punish a defense and wear them down......and, maybe this is foolish thinking, but hopefully put up a few hundred yard games.

There's more than ypc? Of course there is. Thanks for pointing that out. How about yards per game? That's kind of an important stat for RBs isn't it? Especially if that RB is on a team that utilizes the running game so much.

I didn't refuse to read your statements in your other post. They're just not worth commenting on because they're pointless.

Wow........I guess you must be a football God or something. I mean......Ditka's comments are stupid too now? I guess that settles it........you're right. LOL....sad, just sad.

"When is 77 yards and 3.9 yards a carry good?"

    Jerome Bettis (career) - 3.9 y/a, 71.2 y/g, 13662 yds, 91 TDs (i know, he's SO @#$%y, right?)
in 2004 LaDainian Tomlinson also had a 3.9 y/a, yet despite such a craptastic year he still somehow managed to put up 1776 yards from scrimmage (only about 50 more than Forte last year) and he led the league with 17 rushing TDs.

"You think because the box was stacked that is an excuse." what's to be excused, 107.2 yds/gm from scrimmage? what i was saying was forte was the only real threat opposing defenses had to gameplan against.

"but to say he is GREAT is just plain idiotic when he can't break a 4.0 per carry average." he's been in the league one year, and all he needed was 26 (26!) more yards to break that "elite" 4.0 average. so what your telling me is just 26 yards and you would call him great? ha!

"Quite a few of you Bears fans are declaring the Bears as Superbowl bound after they dismantled Denver's defense"
You watch some of the qbs that have come through the franchise and tell me you wouldn't be excited to finally have someone whos not only competent, but has the talent and potential to be great. I wouldn't agree with them in saying there super bowl bound, but i share their excitement.

"especially with Forte's 2.3 ypc against the worst run defense in the league last year."
You can't tell everyone to stop being excited about a preseason game then act like this stat is a trend. be consistent.

"So what that he caught a lot of passes. Isn't that part of his job?"
Yes, and he just happens to be damn good at it too. Listen to any analysts and they'll say one of the greatest parts of his game and it's what separates him from other rbs. you know whats funny, me and my friends were arguing about how great albert pujols and michael jordan are/were, and heres what they said:
"So what he hits a lot of home runs. Isn't that part of his job?"
"So what he won a lot of championships. Isn't that part of his job?"
Part of his job. Ha. quite possibly the single dumbest argument i've ever seen.

"It just goes to show that if he is your number one receiver then that says a lot for your receiving corp."
no argument there, but that doesn't have anything to do with forte. some would say that tomlinson in his prime was san diegos best receiver, even when they had antonio gates.

"his 1200 yards at 3.9 ypc is crap. And I'm sure that anyone who isn't biased (Bear Fans) would pretty much agree. 3.9 ypc is not GREAT"
ya know it's funny you said something about taking off blinders or some dumb @#$%, yet the only stat you ever bring up about forte is his ypc. theres more to football than just ypc, you know?

    "Let's see.......Adrian Peterson....no passing game. box stacked against him every play....4.8 ypc...now that's great."
yes, AD is also one of the most talented ever, and in just two seasons, hes in the top 3 rushers ive seen in my lifetime. your not exactly breaking any new ground by calling him great.

"Stats don't lie so don't give me lame excuses."
Your right, and i gave you plenty of them in my previous post that are definitely more telling of how good a rb is, yet you refused to read them. i never gave any excuses.

"What's so funny about all of this is that every Bears fan seems to think that they have Hall of Famers all over their roster and that the only thing missing was a Quarterback"
Where have you seen this? reading through this comments ive never read anything like that. they do have a few potential hofs (pace(way passed his prime, but still),urlacher, briggs(still too early to tell, but hes one of the best wslb in the league)), thats 3. show me someone whos said otherwise.

"watching a sportscast yesterday with Ditka on it and his exact words "Forte needs to improve upon his yards per carry before he is considered an offensive threat""
If those are his exact words then, yes this is also a stupid comment. granted if Forte needs to improve on anything it would be this, but to say that he isn't an offensive threat, ridiculous.

"Make sure you brush your teethy before you put your Bears PJs on. "
you know i would think this is clever if i haven't seen it in just about every argument ever had on the internet. please, leave the cliches alone.

    Jeremy / Joey

Please don't hurt my feelings anymore. I guess you have put me in my place. Wow. My limited football knowledge has been exposed.

Give me a break you morons.

3.9 yards per carry is what it is. It sucks. Now you're making excuses as to why he only gained 77 yards a game or 3.9 yards per carry.

OK.......again.....let me educate you since you obviously can't take off your blinders.

When is 77 yards and 3.9 yards a carry good? You think because the box was stacked that is an excuse. Hmm.....look at all of the RBs that averaged more yards per carry than him and tell me that every single one of them had better QBs on their team to stretch the field. So if they didn't have better QBs then based on your statements they went up against the same defensive fronts yet unheard of RBs did much better than him.

I never said that Forte wasn't good.......but to say he is GREAT is just plain idiotic when he can't break a 4.0 per carry average.

Quite a few of you Bears fans are declaring the Bears as Superbowl bound after they dismantled Denver's defense.......ooooh.......I'm really impressed, especially with Forte's 2.3 ypc against the worst run defense in the league last year.

So what that he caught a lot of passes. Isn't that part of his job? Thanks for bringing that stat up too. It just goes to show that if he is your number one receiver then that says a lot for your receiving corp.

Ya.......his 1200 yards at 3.9 ypc is crap. And I'm sure that anyone who isn't biased (Bear Fans) would pretty much agree. 3.9 ypc is not GREAT........plain and simple.

    Let's see.......Adrian Peterson....no passing game. box stacked against him every play....4.8 ypc...now that's great.

Stats don't lie so don't give me lame excuses.

What's so funny about all of this is that every Bears fan seems to think that they have Hall of Famers all over their roster and that the only thing missing was a Quarterback. I am not against the Bears. Hell.....I grew up in a Bears family but I call it the way it IS.

Funny.......watching a sportscast yesterday with Ditka on it and his exact words "Forte needs to improve upon his yards per carry before he is considered an offensive threat". Maybe you should tell Mr. Ditka that his football knowledge is limited.

Want to educate me some more? I'll be up for a few more hours if it's not already past your bedtime. Make sure you brush your teethy before you put your Bears PJs on.

lets see forte was a ROOKIE last year and was 36% of the offense with a so so QB now with cutler
someone you are gambling with if you load the box cuz he can throw the ball very well
this guy forte well be better then last year to say that his 1200 and 1700 yards is crap is crazy
12 tds yes there are a lot of great backs in the league but most have really good back ups

the bears D spent most of the time on the field last year and had very bad forth quarters
and played with a slim lead i think cutler is going to fix that

Damn i thought you fell asleep on me you old fart. No offense to you older guys out there. Now you want to talk about my spelling but check out this sentence you put out. "long enough to realize that maybe broken bone was making his finger bleed" you think you might of missed a letter there? Stop criticising and make some more sense pops. I never said ORTON wasn't a man. I said yesterday was a big game for him and the BRONCO fans, he could of gave the BRONCO fans something to cheer about by showing his toughness and coming back in for them. Who cares what a QB did in college? Many great/good college QBs aren't very good in the NFL & sometimes some not so great QBs become great in the NFL. Look at what FLACO did for the RAVENS last year, sh!t do i even have to mention TOM BRADY who was drafted real late in the round. College stats don't mean squat.

And for you to use the excuse about ORTON having to deal with 1st and 20 because of the penalties is just adding icing on the cake. I thought you said that preseason didn't mean much, it sounds like you're keeping track of what was done in this game. Don't be a hypocrite. Look at the field position CUTLER had to deal with in the 1st quarter? When did you see ORTON drive DA BEARS that far down the field? I'm not saying that ORTON isn't a good QB but I'm saying that you obviously don't know much if don't think CUTLER isn't a better QB overall.

I have definately had too many beers but you definately need to get your finger out your as*...

"A RB could carry the ball 400 times and get 1200 yards. Is that good?"

First off, RBs very very very rarely get 400 carries. and if they were averaging a putrid 3 yards a carry there is absolutely no way they would ever get anywhere close to that kind of workload.

"A 3.9 average is nothing impressive. Forte averaged 77 yards a game rushing. That's crap."

    A. Forte was basically the entire offense last year and defenses basically set there entire gameplan around stopping him by loading the box.
    B. Despite this, he still managed to put up 1238 rushing yards, good for 7th in the league, since when was being in the top 10 considered crap?
    C. As i'm sure you well know, the point of football is to score touchdowns, Forte's total of 12 was also good (or crappy as you would believe) enough for top 10.
    D. Since I can tell your football knowledge is limited, i give you this very important (probably the most important) is that forte was also the leading receiver, which brings his total yards from scrimmage to 1715 yds, good for 3rd in the nfl.

If you still want to be as closeminded as to say yds/carry is the only measuring stick of a rb, fine, be an idiot. but if you decide not to be such a dumbass and take into account all parts of the game, you realize, yes, forte is an elite rb.
