Ravens frustrate Sanchez in 24-23 win over Jets

BALTIMORE (AP)—Once he gains experience, New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez(notes) will probably become more comfortable and confident in the pocket.

And, if the rookie is looking for a real positive, there’s this: He won’t have to face the Baltimore Ravens again this year.

Vying to become the Jets starter, Sanchez got off to a wretched start Monday night and finished with a flourish in a 24-23 preseason loss.

Starting for the first time, Sanchez handed off the ball on the game’s opening play from scrimmage. Then he forced a pass while being hit in the stomach by middle linebacker Ray Lewis(notes). The ball was intercepted by Haloti Ngata(notes), who rumbled 25 yards for a touchdown to make it 7-0 with 52 seconds elapsed.

“Not obviously the way you want to start. I thought I was doing the right thing; I felt Ray come free on the right side from the protection,” Sanchez said. “I was checking it down to the flat, perfect. Haloti just jumped right in front of the ball and made a really athletic play.”

Sanchez nearly had his second pass picked off, too. On his final play, however, the first-round draft pick threw his first NFL touchdown pass—a 19-yarder to running back Leon Washington(notes) with 5:50 left in the second quarter.

Drafted fifth overall out of Southern California, Sanchez went 3 for 8 for 43 yards. He didn’t experience success until the Ravens removed several players from the first-team defense, including Lewis and safety Ed Reed(notes).

Jets first-year head coach Rex Ryan spent the previous 10 years building the Baltimore defense, but there was no way he could fully explain to Sanchez the experience of going up against the wickedly effective unit.

“You put a young guy like Sanchez in there and you see our defense, it can be difficult,” Lewis said. “You saw his eyes get big, and he was jumping around in the pocket. Bottom line: We gave a lot of looks and disguises and we confused him a little bit.”

To say the least.

“Oh, they were flying. They were flying around,” Sanchez said. “You practice for it and you see it on film. These guys were doing it. You’re trying to keep one eye on Ed Reed and one eye on Ray Lewis and a D-lineman gets you.”

Long after Sanchez departed, third-string quarterback Erik Ainge(notes) scored on a sneak with 22 seconds left to get the Jets to 24-23. Ryan called for a 2-point conversion that failed.

Kellen Clemens(notes), who started New York’s other exhibition game, was 5 for 10 for 60 yards. Like Sanchez, he had an interception returned for a touchdown and threw a TD pass (a 28-yarder to David Clowney(notes) in the third quarter).

The Ravens looked forward to seeing Ryan again, but made it evident they can survive without him. Baltimore returned two interceptions for touchdowns, forced two fumbles and had a sack.

“That’s a great defense over there, and we’re striving to be a great defense over here,” said Jets linebacker Bart Scott(notes), who followed Ryan to New York.

The Jets didn’t get a first down in their opening three series, and Baltimore used a 43-yard pass from Joe Flacco(notes) to Derrick Mason(notes) to set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Ray Rice(notes) for a 14-0 lead.

Another Jets punt ensued, and Baltimore moved 62 yards before rookie Graham Gano missed a 46-yard field goal. Gano, who is competing against Steve Hauschka for the starting job, has missed twice in two games.

Following the miss, Sanchez finally started to move the offense. A short pass to Washington on a third-and-12 went for 16 yards, and a run by Washington for 15 yards on a third-and-10 set up the TD pass.

“I’m proud of the way he responded,” Ryan said of Sanchez. “It ain’t going to be perfect; sometimes you have these type of nights. You’ve got to give credit where credit is due, and most of that goes to their defense.”

Notes: The Ravens attempted half as many passes against the Jets (27) as against Washington (54) in the preseason opener. … Baltimore TE L.J. Smith(notes) left in the fourth quarter with a hamstring problem. … New York RB Shonn Greene(notes) got hit in the ribs, but Ryan said the injury was not serious.

Is it just me or do Sanchez look smaller than what he is listed at? It seems like he did well when they have him pass outside of the pocket. Maybe the Jets will run more boot-legs this year. He dose have an accurate arm and he can move pretty well. All in all not a bad quarterback.

It's REAL simple the more you want the Jets offense to move, the more you give the ball to Leon Washington. Shotty should be fired if he limits his carries again this year.

You have to the the deer in the headlights look on Sanchez face when he is getting drilled on the second play of the game by Ray Lewis while Ngata runs it in for a score. He's never seen a defense like that built by his own coach. Talk about being thrown to the wolves, but then again he is in the NFL an it's time to man up. Preseason or not, sorry jets fans, long season.

I agree Leon Washington is a beast, they better use him.

for being a rookie in his first real test against a top notch defense i think the kid did good. he got up dusted himself off and put up 6 points. with the good runnin game and decent defense they shouldnt ask him to do a whole lot plus the first 5-6 games on the jets schedule are tough. by the middle of the season you'll see he's the real deal. so all you haters and naysayers(especially pat fans who are a lil nervous about the kid in ny) y'all need to chill with that noise. its a rookie qb just startin out y'all expectin him to go out there and light it up but the real football fan knows the deal.

"What I;ve noticed is that not many players from USC are making much noise once they get to the NFL; they kidda fizzle out and just collect a paycheck."

You can say that about any school. Like you said, college success doesn't equal NFL success; if a lot of USC players fizzle out, part of it is because a lot of USC players get drafted, it's a numbers thing. And even though most do, one shouldn't overlook the non-glamour OL and defensive positions (where a fair share of Trojans are doing well). If Sanchez gets the nod, then 3 USC QB's will be starting this NFL season, not too shabby.

"Rememebr, the coach Pete Carroll couldn't make it in the NFL and it looks like his players cannot."

Two different games, just ask Charlie Weiss. CFB is all about recruiting and relating to and motivating kids, most of whom aren't even old enough to drink; the NFL is a business, pure and simple. Carroll's job is to win at USC, the NFL is irrelevant to his situation. He figured out what he does well and few do it better. NFL legend Bill Walsh finished his last two seasons at Stanford with 7-14-1 record. Doesn't taint his legacy one bit.

Im just glad the media types aren't all over Sanchez's jock like they were after the first game. They keep trying to make him the second coming of Joe Montana, but his poor performance didn't give them much to crow about.

Although I was sick of hearing the broadcaster talk about how well he responded to adversity. He threw a TD pass against back-ups on a busted coverage! The saftey was supposed to roll over the top with the linebacker in coverage. Ed Reed picks it off or blows up the RB.

Clemens did just as well and has more experience, but ur right they are going to start Sanchez. He is going to be destroyed in the AFC East.

Mjhst67 what games have u watched over the last couple years. Neither the Stealers or the Ravens have beat the Patriots. The Ravens haven't beat the Stealers YET! Both the Ravens and Stealers attempt to use intimidation when playing other teams, but the Pats are not intimidated. The Patriots players are smart players which is why BB selects them. It's not all about brute and hitting; you have to be able to think and distinquish. Joe Flacco is a good QB considering he came from a little known school without all the hype like Sanchez. What I;ve noticed is that not many players from USC are making much noise once they get to the NFL; they kidda fizzle out and just collect a paycheck. Rememebr, the coach Pete Carroll couldn't make it in the NFL and it looks like his players cannot. A great college career doesn't necessarily translate into a great NFL career. Look at Vince Young still fighting just to remain with the Titans? He had one good year in college which allowed him some looks going into the NFL. He was not ready. Is Sanchez ready? Probably not. Look at the success Eric Ainge had at Tennessee and he is a 3rd string backup in the NFL FOR THE JETS!

even though it was a preseason game it was very exciting. glad my ravens won too. the game would have been a blow out if it were an exhibition game. Sanchez is not doing well in the preseaon ,but look at flacco last year, he was terrible. regular season is where it counts and that is when you will see the real sanchez
