Niners beat Raiders 21-20 in exhibition game

SAN FRANCISCO (AP)—Alex Smith showed he can deliver a crushing block and bring down a ball carrier with a tackle.

Unfortunately for Smith, those tasks are secondary when it comes to being an NFL quarterback. It was when he was called upon to pass that Smith struggled.

Smith completed 3 of 9 passes and threw an interception in what might have been his last chance to beat out Shaun Hill(notes) for San Francisco’s starting quarterback job before the 49ers held off the Oakland Raiders 21-20 Saturday night.

Hill, who started the exhibition opener, wasn’t a whole lot better, going 3 for 7 for 20 yards. Coach Mike Singletary would like to pick a starter before next week’s exhibition game in Dallas, putting more importance on this game.

“I wanted to see both of them do more in the time they were in,” Singletary said.

Rookie Nate Davis(notes) led the Niners to three scores in the fourth quarter, with Kory Sheets’ 5-yard run giving San Francisco a 21-14 lead. Charlie Frye(notes) scored on a 14-yard run for Oakland but threw an incompletion on the 2-point conversion attempt with 3:30 to go.

The game came the same week that coach Tom Cable was accused of breaking assistant Randy Hanson’s jaw in an attack that is being investigated by the police and the NFL.

Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft, is running out of time to convince Singletary that he should be the starter this season. Expected to be San Francisco’s franchise quarterback, Smith instead has struggled when healthy before missing much of 2007 and all of last season with an injured shoulder.

He completed a 15-yard pass to Vernon Davis(notes) on his first drive before it stalled and then made his best play on the second. On a reverse to Arnaz Battle(notes), Smith lowered his surgically repaired right shoulder into defensive end Greg Ellis(notes), knocking him to the turf. Battle lost 6 yards on the play, but Smith drew cheers for his block.

“It felt good,” he said. “As quarterbacks you don’t get to deliver many blows. It was nice to be able to do that.”

Two plays later, Smith threw high to Josh Morgan(notes) and the ball deflected into Ricky Brown’s(notes) hands. Brown returned the ball 47 yards before being tackled by Smith at the San Francisco 7.

Smith threw only one more pass before leaving after the first quarter.

“The numbers would say last week was better but I felt much better this week,” Smith said. “I think numbers can be deceiving.”

Hill didn’t get many chances to throw as the Niners relied heavily on rookie running back Glen Coffee(notes).

Coffee, a third-round pick out of Alabama, gashed Oakland’s run defense, ripping off four runs of at least 10 yards, including a 35-yarder that led to a field goal by Joe Nedney(notes). Coffee, who replaced Frank Gore(notes) after one series, finished with 129 yards on 16 carries.

“I think when you’re running it that successfully, why go away from it,” Hill said. “Sometimes that’s how it is.’

Cable was upset with his team’s discipline, especially on defense. The 49ers ran for 275 yards against a Raiders team that has spent much of training camp looking to improve a leaky run defense.

“I did not think we tackled real well on defense,” Cable said. “A couple of times we really had guys in the hole who had to just wrap up and they did not do that.”

Making the situation even worse for Oakland’s run defense was that middle linebacker Kirk Morrison(notes) left in the first quarter with a dislocated left elbow. Morrison is battling Brown for the starting spot and said he will miss a couple of weeks.

JaMarcus Russell(notes) started slowly for Oakland, missing an open Darrius Heyward-Bey(notes) on third down of his first drive and tripping over Darren McFadden’s(notes) feet on third down on the second drive. After Brown’s interception, Russell was unable to get Oakland in the end zone, throwing high to Murphy in the back of the end zone.

Russell found his groove on the next drive, starting with a 12-yard pass to Zach Miller. He completed an 11-yard swing pass to Justin Fargas(notes) and then got a 22-yard gain when Nate Clements(notes) was called for pass interference against Johnnie Lee Higgins(notes).

After a pair of penalties backed Oakland up, Russell took advantage of a miscommunication between Clements and Mark Roman(notes) to find a wide open Murphy in the end zone on third-and-21 to end his night. That was Russell’s only completion to a wide receiver all night. He finished 7-for-11 for 76 yards.

NOTES: Jeff Garcia(notes) made his Oakland debut and threw an interception to end his only drive late in the second quarter. … Michael Robinson(notes) added 97 yards on 14 carries for San Francisco. … Niners OL Adam Snyder(notes) limped off late in first half right ankle and knee sprain that is not believed to be serious.

Lets see the niners qb (none of them are as good as hassleback anyway) and all of their WR's and most of their OL get hurt and lets see if they can win a game!!

Seahawks will be the winner of their division!
Just remember that i said it when it happens

The Raiders' logo is going to change before the season starts. There is now going to be 2 eye patches over the face of their logo, because not even the logo can bear to watch them.

Neither team is going to the Super Bowl and for that matter most likely will not make the play-offs either I don't see either team winning more than 8 games and I am a Raider Fan just telling the truth about both teams.

Damn our run Defense is piss poor, yet San Fran's offense can only muster 21 points!!! Wow 49ers sure are on their way to a super bowl....hahahaha not lets watch them have a hugely disappointing season......275 yards running, where were they running to because it surely wasn't the end zone.....And the Raiders still almost won, they could have taken the tie and gone to OT, but why its the preseason, GOOD LUCK NINERS HOPE YOU FIND THAT EVER ELUSIVE END ZONE

To all Niners fans: Please stop making yourself as low as the Raiders fans! Their staduim is the black hole because, isnt it obvious...theres nothing there! Its a longshot to the Super Bowl my fellow 49ers but post-season is with in our reach! Seahawks fans are funny! Blame it on the injuries! hahahahaha! Hasselback is garbage stop licking his balls like he is a GOD! Seahawks are out of the picture you have to live with that this season! The 49ers are working up from a good base this season and there isnt any denying it! Their O Line is alot better, more organized! Running game, Frankie G and Coffee enough said! Morgan, Walker, Bruce, and Jason Hill as wide recievers have become a big improvement! Bly is an excellent addition to the D! QB will NOT be Smith for sure, i believe it will be Hill or Davis fighting for the position! Hill will be starter due to his experience!

Let the Hater Nation keep on hating, they know nothing about football so they devote themselves to trash talking! Raiders fans are never faithful only the old timers that remember the glory of playoffs and superbowl glory! Games are never sold out, never aired... you know you're in Oakland hahahahaha!! Trashy fans who just get drunk and fight is what the Raiders fans are. Went to the Niners-Raiders game and most of Raiders fans were ddrunk out of their minds and acting like monkeys! No suprise there! Move on with Russel, its not like your team can get any worse. . . maybe Cable should get a halftime show teaching how to break jaws, maybe that will fill up half the stadium!

I went to the game & it was dope to just be out there!! nothing looked to outstanding... at all. we won & i love it. but the sorry raiders gave us that game....let's keep things in perspective here. i look forward to our team growing better as we all do. alex smith is a hot pile of s%#t. our coach is off the hook as far as motivating these guys to go out there and beat some a#%. rate-her fans are a bunch of idiots who try & live up to their own bullsh%!....that was my son's first game & in the parking lot after the game he saw some stupid raider fans(2 guys) hitting cars with an object....so naturally a niner fan got mad at them for hitting one of the cars. the niner fan hopped out of his car & charged him w/ a knife as one of his friends(another niner fan) charged the other raider fan w/ a 4x4. i didn't stick around to let my son watch the rest. it was wack that you raider fans can't take a loss like men. preseason game too........ forty niners all day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    (104) another stupid niners fan that actually thinks they can make the playoffs with a helthy and improoved seahawks team in their division...

The seahawks wouldve been in the playoffs instead of the cardinals if it wasnt for injuries, now that they are healthy, the division is theirs again, the rams suck, the niners suck, and the cardinals arent good enough to be ahead of the hawks... the hawks will be in the playoffs, possibly the superbowl

If any RAYDUH fan takes ANYTHING from this loss, it's that the RayDUH's Run Defense is pathetic. It has been bad for several years now. They simply can not stop the run. Teams will continue to run the ball right at the RayDuhs and they will lose a majority of their games. It's not like they have some prolific offense that will outscore other teams! On the other side of the field, the Niners running game looks solid, and the offensive line looked tremendous against the Raiders the whole game. If the Niners can get any production out of Hill as a starter, they are going to win some games. The Niner defense played fairly well, and held their own for the most part against a pretty weak effort by the RayDuhs. Sure there were some mental lapses that allowed the RayDuh's to score, but by and large the Niners defense outplayed the RayDuh defense hands down. As a Niner fan, I am much more excited about our season and I can see that with a QB proclaimed starter, this team will get better and better on offense and the defense looks ready to play. WHAT do the RayDUHS have to look forward to? Their coach punching out a Ref? It is status quo in the RayDuh soap opera! If there are any RayDUH fans that somehow think there was some sort of moral victory out of this PRE SEASON game, they have drank their share of Koolaid. I predict that the Niners will make the playoffs this year and the RayDuhs will be in the cellar again. Tom Cable is a terrible coach who is a puppet to old man Alice. Singletary is a coach that the players respect and admire. The Niners are looking up and the mistakes they made are correctable. The RayDuhs have had the same problem stopping the run for the past 4 years. They just dont have the personnel to get the job done. Their offensive woes totally overshawdow their modest gains at the defensive end. RayDuh fan, the RAYDUH emblem has a patch over BOTH eyes this year and doesnt want to watch the train wreck that the RayDuhs are headed for. 4-12 looks like a longshot for the RayDuhs! 9-7 or even 10-6 looks very doable for the Niners! I am jazzed about the Niners this year and I hope they continue to improve! GO NINERS !!!

Raiders Kicked there A%! in the first half and that is all that matters in the preseason. It comes down to starters. raiders did not even kick that field goal but the Niners kicked theres so they could score on the raiders. How gay is that they where out to win in preseason even in the 4th quarter. raiders won that game hands down!!! Not even a chance if the raiders kept there starters in the whole game. Garcia could have beet them as a second string if they kept him in. shawn hill suck and so does Smith !!!!

If this RAIDER team dont get it together in the preseason, they are going to have a horrific season!!! 1)... PLAY-CALLING....you have to call plays that suit your team. They need to run the football... i think that might be a big reason they cant move the ball... 2) RED-ZONE.... we just cant score in the red-zone. 29th last year... have to go to your strengths, which is the rungame!! 3) RUN-DEFENSE... just plain terrible... definitely not tough enough, poor tackling, sluggish!!! 4) TEAM UNITY... Everyone has to get on the same page... havent had that since the MADDEN days..5) Overall this team has to get it together soon, or im afraid we RAIDER fans are looking at another 4-12 season!!!!

    niners in the playoffs?? NO!
ANYONE who thinks that'll happen this year is messed up in the head!
The only reason the cardinals were even in the playoffs last year was because the Seahawks had a boat-load of injuries.
With Hasselback back and with their recievers healthy and the addition of Houshmenzadah (or however that is spelled) the Hawks offence will be back and they will easily out perform anyone in their division.
As well as their offence, they have a great defence, especially the linebackers, with the addition of Aaron Curry, probably the best in the NFL linebacker wise...
I would know, i went to their training camp... Aaron Curry is a beast

i love how people are commenting that the niners are gonna be in the playoffs this year when we all know thats BS...
The only reason the cardinals even made it to the playoffs last years is that the Seahawks had so many injuries, now that they have a healthy QB and WR core, and with the addition of Housh, the seahawks will take back their rightful spot at #1 in that division
