Romo, stadium dazzle for Cowboys vs. Titans

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP)—Dallas Cowboys fans got a glimpse of everything they were hoping to see Friday night.

Their new stadium dazzled. Tony Romo(notes) was darn good. And the Cowboys won, pretty easily.

In the first football game at the nearly $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium, Romo looked right at home, going 18 of 24 for 192 yards and sending Dallas on its way to a 30-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans in a preseason game.

“It was incredible,” Romo said, comparing the atmosphere to a regular-season game. “It’s really exciting to be a part of something this special. It’s only going to continue and get better as the year goes on.”

Thousands of fans rushed in when the doors opened two hours before kickoff, many eager to see just how humongous the overhead video boards are and some simply in a hurry to claim the best standing-room spots. By the time players walked through a club packed with fans to get to the field, they were all smiles about finally getting to play in this place they’ve heard so much about for so long.

“The electricity that we felt just prior to the opening kickoff was really special,” said Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who spent more than $825 million on the building, the rest of the $1.15 billion tab picked up by city taxpayers. “A great night. A great crowd. And an event we will remember for a long, long time.”

The Cowboys (1-1) played up to the mood, for the most part.

After losing a long kickoff return to a penalty then going three-and-out on their first drive, Romo controlled a 15-play, 90-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run from Marion Barber(notes). Although it technically was the first TD here, it won’t go down that way since this game doesn’t count—but Barber sure seemed excited to score it anyway.

Tennessee (2-1) answered with a field goal and a 17-yard touchdown pass from Kerry Collins(notes) to Justin Gage(notes), giving the Titans a 10-7 lead with 59 seconds left in the half. Then Romo used all but one of those seconds to move the Cowboys 79 yards for the go-ahead score. It came on another 1-yard run, this time by Felix Jones(notes), who got the drive going by turning a short pass into a 42-yard gain. Dallas gained 249 yards in the first half, piling up 17 first downs.

“We didn’t tackle the way we’re capable of doing the first half with our starting defense,” Titans coach Jeff Fisher said. “There were too many third-and-shorts and fourth-and-shorts.”

In the second half, Dallas backup quarterback Jon Kitna(notes) threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to undrafted rookie Kevin Ogletree, who tipped it to himself and made a one-handed catch while also being interfered with by the defender. The Cowboys got a safety when Tennessee’s third-string quarterback Patrick Ramsey(notes) was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone, then third-stringer Stephen McGee(notes) threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Rodney Hannah(notes) with 1:53 left.

Collins played the entire first half and was 8 of 11 for 55 yards and a touchdown, but the offense gained only 78 yards.

Tennessee went three and out on its first three drives, including the one that ended in a field goal; the Titans started at the Dallas 32 but had to settle for a 46-yarder by Rob Bironas(notes). They finally got moving on their last series of the half, going 69 yards in eight plays.

“It was really important to get that touchdown,” Collins said. “It was good to finish on a strong note.”

Vince Young(notes) started the second half for Tennessee and was 3 of 9 for 33 yards with a batted ball getting intercepted on his final attempt. He also ran twice for just 2 yards. Rookie Javon Ringer(notes) gained 33 yards on five carries.

Instead of announcing attendance, the Cowboys said there were 75,720 tickets distributed. The place looked mostly full, although there were some unfilled seats in the top-dollar areas. Most suites seemed in use, with folks even hanging out on the patios outside the field-level suites.

Customers didn’t get to see all the bells and whistles, though, because Jones kept the retractable roof and retractable end-zone doors closed, and the Ring of Honor had yet to be installed. There’s also no giant star on the 50-yard line, like the one made famous at Texas Stadium when Terrell Owens(notes) celebrated on it while playing for the San Francisco 49ers. Gotta save something for the home opener against the Giants on Sept. 20.

Perhaps the most notable stadium nugget Friday night was that Tennessee’s rookie punter A.J. Trapasso kicked the ball into the bottom of the massive video boards, forcing a do-over. He almost hit it on that kick, too.

The screen—which is 60 yards wide and 25 yards high—was an inviting target for Trapasso and starter Craig Hentrich(notes) during pregame warmups. Both hit it multiple times.

I am a Cowboys fan I think we should at least win ten games. I don't care how many games we win as long as we get to the playoff. And finally when a playoff game. I don't expected or think we will go undeafted. But this team does have a lot to prove and has to redeem itself from last year. They are making the Eagles the Cowboys of last season crowning them already. I do think the Eagles will be very good but we will see how they do without Jim Johnson. I like that we are under the radar and no one is showing us respect....

There are so many misspelled words on this thing, I'm embarrassed. Not for the Cowboys, but for America. Oh well, I wish y'all well. Go Cowboys! For that Pats fan that said Dallas wouldn't go to the Super Bowl because they couldn't get past the Patriots? If the scenario plays out, they would meet "IN" the Superbowl, Chucklehead! AFC? NFC? Nevermind. Anyway, if Romo can keep it zipped up for a season, hopefully they can make it past the first round of the playoffs. You Make the Call!

    Peace Out-Later

bill64111........I am a ex-Pennsylvanian living in Texas(SA). Been a Spurs fan since the ABA days and a Steelers fan since the early 70's. Only visited the Dallas story because I read most of the NFL team recaps. Just don't care for Oakland (Al Davis) and Dallas (Jerry Jones). Revisited this blog to see people like yourself whine. 10 championships with more to come!!!!!!!

So far one smart comment on the whole page and it's Pat's fan. They are the team to watch by the way (Brady is pissed and is out to prove he is the elite QB of the league), you won't go to the superbowl because you won't get past them. As a diehard Cowboy's fan, I did see improvement because I know the 3-4 scheme and what they've done to improve it, especially the nickle package which Wade Phillips is the best at in the league (see what he did in San Diego, Buffalo and Atlanta). If you watched the game Alexandra K we dominated them on both sides of the line, held them to 10 points (3 of which were because of a penalty that saved their drive). Twice the possesion time, twice the yardage (overall actually more than twice the amount) and we held them twice in the red zone limiting only 3 points. Our defense played very well against a team that had the best regular season schedule in the league last year. They never got their running game going, never. Our first team outplayed theirs. It's just preseason but I saw marked improvement. You classless idiots need to learn football before you spew your garbage. Thanks Matt for your objectivity, I hope you guys destroy the Steelers if you meet in the AFC post season.

Gary C........... I admit my typo, should have been "their". How about "thunk" as you stated? In San Antonio the Cowboys (we refer to them as Crackboys) have a lot of down right low class fans. I am not the least bit jealous of them. Been there done that as far as my teams are concerned. Ten championships between the Steelers and the Spurs so I could care less how Dallas does. It's really not fun anymore making fun of Dallas because of their lack of success in all their major franchises. My sister lives in Southlake so I frequently visit the city, just visit though.

Getting excited about wins or losses in preseason is about as dumb as the comments made by Sixburgh. And hey, Mr. Brilliant, try to figure out the difference between their, they're and there. Wow, there are numerous Cowboys fans in Dallas? Who would have thunk? One more thing. Learn how to use your apostrophes correctly. Plurals and possessives. Look it up.
    Uneducated, indeed.

WHAT A JOKE THIS GAME WAS!!!! I cant believe how everyone is saying "wow look at the Cowboys" "wow, we look good this year""what an easy win" .... guys, the Cowboys looked as horrible as ever and did not look ONE bit better than last year. They won this game, yes, but what did it prove??? NOTHING! Cowboys scored due to some Titan "flags" and did not impress me one bit. It is dumb to say they showed any kind of improvement and of course only Dallas fans' will say they did. They lost horribly to Oakland, and that wasnt a surprise to me at all. Give me a break, I cant wait to see these overrated Cowgirls play the real deal coming up soon, its time to hear bs excuses again of why they lost.

Sixburgh. You're retarded. You can't market a team if they don't win. And last time i looked in the mirror i was white and a cowboy fan and so are all my other white friends. You seem to be jealous of dallas even though yall got one more championship than us. Maybe you need to take your uneducated racist ass to pittsburg. Cause the team Cowher built isn't gonna last Tomlin too much longer.
