GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP)—Look past the towering rock concert stage that engulfs part of the Lambeau Field parking lot and there’s a pair of massive banners depicting Aaron Rodgers(notes) and Drew Brees(notes) hanging off the arena across the street.

Hotels will be full. Schools will close early. Coolers will be stocked and grills will be sizzling as a presidential speech goes largely ignored. As Kid Rock warms up for a pregame concert, there will be no doubt that a bigger-than-big game is hitting the NFL’s smallest market.

Rodgers and Brees are the last two Super Bowl MVPs, leading the last two Super Bowl winners into Thursday night’s opener. For the league, it’s a chance to finally put away any lingering resentment from an offseason filled with ugly and tense—and ultimately successful—labor negotiations. For the Saints and Packers, it’s a chance to send an early message that they intend to contend again.

Greg Jennings(notes) said it feels kind of like a “mini Super Bowl,” but Rodgers wasn’t quite willing to go that far.

“It’s a similar feel to a big game, a playoff game,” Rodgers said. “I don’t want to say the Super Bowl. There’s a big atmosphere outside the stadium. But the only thing that matters is taking care of business on the field.”

[Related: Packers sole focus remains on winning]

Brees knows no big-picture objectives will be won or lost in the first week of the season.

“I’m sure we’re going to get questions about future playoff implications and all that stuff about this game,” Brees said. “We see ourselves as a great team and as a contender. They see themselves as a great team and as a contender. The fact of the matter is it’s one game and it just happens to be the first game of the season on a Thursday night on national television. But you just try to cut through all that and understand it’s just a game, and it’s just one game.”

After last year’s stunning playoff loss to Seattle prevented New Orleans from repeating, Brees knows firsthand about the scrutiny that comes after winning the Super Bowl.

[Related: Video: Is Packers’ Aaron Rodgers an MVP favorite?]

“You lose a game or something like that, it’s like people are just waiting for something bad to happen to your team so they can say, ‘I told you so,”’ Brees said. “There’s pressure with that, and obviously the expectation level after winning the Super Bowl, the thought being that, ‘Hey, there’s no reason why we can’t go do it again.’ You just have to be careful that there’s not a sense of entitlement there. It almost becomes even harder the next year because everybody’s gunning for you.”

What Brees doesn’t know is how the lockout will affect the Packers—or any other team, for that matter. The Saints got together for informal, team-wide workouts during the lockout, organized by Brees. The Packers didn’t, and Rodgers and other Packers players have publicly dismissed those workouts as not being worthwhile.

“We tried to simulate as best we could a normal offseason, albeit it wasn’t at our team facility and we had to make other arrangements on our own and do everything on our own,” Brees said. “The hope was that that would be able to put us into a situation where we felt like we still had an offseason. … It would feel like we were just going to training camp, just like we were every year, but we were a little bit ahead of the game and maybe would give us an edge.”

The Saints are recommitting to the running game and have some new faces to make it happen. Reggie Bush(notes) is gone, but Pierre Thomas(notes) returns after being slowed by an ankle injury last season. He’ll be joined by free agent addition Darren Sproles(notes) and first-round rookie Mark Ingram(notes).

“There’ll be plenty of touches not only for Pierre, but for Mark and Darren,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “And it’s our job to mix those up and also to let the running back get comfortable and get in a rhythm when he’s in the game.”

New Orleans will be without wide receiver Lance Moore(notes), who has a nagging groin injury.

When the Saints are on defense, coordinator Gregg Williams loves to call blitzes. But that’s where Rodgers is at his best.

“The one thing about Aaron Rodgers that’s most impressive is that he was the best quarterback last year against the blitz and the pressure,” free safety Malcolm Jenkins(notes) said. “He gets the ball out of his hand quick, so we’ve got to find ways to create some things.”

Despite the condensed training camp, the Packers have added new wrinkles to their offense, including a no-huddle look that proved successful in the preseason.

[Related: Where do Pack rank among NFL’s most valuable teams?]

The Packers also are getting at least three likely starters back from season-ending injuries: tight end Jermichael Finley(notes), safety Morgan Burnett(notes) and running back Ryan Grant(notes); Grant will split carries with James Starks(notes). A fourth potential starter returning from injury, defensive lineman Mike Neal(notes), has a nagging knee injury and his status for Thursday is unclear.

The Packers think the reintroduction of those injured players, along with some incoming rookies who may play significant roles, will help them fend off any sense of complacency that may have prevented past Super Bowl winners from repeating.

After spending last year’s Super Bowl run on the sidelines, Finley isn’t shy about his goals.

“Win the championship, man,” Finley said. “If the chemistry gets back to where it was last year, it’s going to be all good from there.”

Rodgers thinks the Packers can be perennial contenders.

“If you think about ‘teams of the decades,’ those teams won multiple Super Bowls,” Rodgers said. “The Steelers of the ’70s, Niners of the ’80s, Cowboys in the ’90s, Patriots in the 2000s were multiple Super Bowl victors. We want to want to re-establish that tradition of going deep in the playoffs every year and making runs at Super Bowls.”

Since I was born & raised in Louisiana, I have been a Saints fan all of my life. I moved to Illinois 21 years ago and became a Bears fan whenever the Saints were out of the picture for going to the playoffs. This came to an abrupt end years ago when the Bears fans were throwing snowballs at the saints fans during one of their games in Chicago and I then lost all respect for this team & their fans. I then chose the Greenbay Packers as my second choice in teams. I loved what Aaron Rodgers did for this team and had a lot of respect for them but after seeing the post game interview with Aaron bashing the Saints for having off season workouts, I was ashamed to say I was a Packers fan. What an arrogant a**hole he turns out to be! You will never see Drew Brees making these kinds of remarks after winning a game. He always shows the utmost respect for the other teams. Besides.... the Saints only lost by 8 points and if it weren't for the Saints making mistakes, they would have beat the Packers. I am sure there are a lot of other Americans who were just as upset with his arrogance & rudeness. I know that Aaron is a good quarterback but it takes more than winning a game to be great in my book. I am proud of Drew Brees for helping us to win the Superbowl, but I also have great respect for him because he is such a nice person who is not afraid to admit his mistakes and would never lower himself to bash another team after winning. This is what makes a great quarterback that the fans can be proud of!

I guess someone forgot about the Super Bowl last year, but no need to worry. The way the Steelers played today against the Ravens, I don't think we have to worry about meeting them this year. LOL!!!

1 game dosnt silence anything.....So rogers comes out has a good 1st game of the season, then runs his mouth. What about next week rogers? and the next, and the next, your TEAM, I say team, has a whole lot of football left to play, and on any given sunday something can happen. Sometimes its best just to remain silent instead of running your mouth...what if you lose the next 5 games, your going to look prety silly

Let's be honest here - if you were putting together a team in the NFL for real, the first player to be chosen would be Aaron Rodgers. He's just as good as Brady or Manning and is much younger. Anyone who would argue this statement is an idiot.

    GO PACK GO!!!

@#$% about the rule changes created a higher score in this game??? It was awesome QB play on both sides of the ball and poor D. The secondaries on each side were completely overwhelmed. GB might be like the Colts of yesteryear, a D predicated on having a lead and maintaining it. Should be an exciting year!

Check out the stats ~ Green Bay punted the ball 4 times & the Saints punted twice...!!!...

The Saints lost because the coach got GREEDY trying to win which is ADMIRABLE but YOU TAKE THE SURE POINTS over possibly turning the ball over on downs...!!!...

In the press conference afterwards ~ Brees / Peyton & even Green Bays' coach alluded to THESE FACTS ~ IN CODE ~ YOU HAD TO READ BEWTEEN THE LINES ~ but they said it in a round about way...!!!...

A great game all the same ~ I said if this game goes to overtime ~ IT IS FIXED...!!!...

A real close nail biter ~ I know most of my nails are gone...!!!...

NOW ~ I HOPE THAT THE RAVENS DESTROY THE STEALERS...!!!...

It was a great game. I like the way the Saints never gave up and kept playing 4 quarters of football.
But even though Green Bay won the game and I am a Green Bay fan they only played 3 quarters of football.
Green Bay let up at the end and that almost let the Saints back into the game. Granted the defense made the stop. But the offense should have driven the ball down the field and scored at least a field goal on the last Green Bay posession. Made it an 11 point game with less than 50 seconds left on the clock.
That 3rd down pass was so under the 1st down goal it was designed to fail. That bothers me. Sooner or later that kind of game play will cost Green Bay a game or two this season. It is not the kind of game play I expect from a champion team. The Saints played more like a champion team IMHO.
They never quit or let up even when down. Green Bay you guys can learn something from them.
If Green Bay wants to repeat the Super Bowl they are going to have to step up the game play. Too many other teams are going to be gunning for them the defending super bowl champs. Lets live up to it guys.
You played great for 3 quarters but that is not enough in my book. You can do better than that.

Why is it that when I post a comment regarding the lack of discussion in the broadcaster booth about Hawk's penalty, it doesn't get posted? Is there something to the hush hush?

I am not trying to cast aspersions on anyone, both teams played well offensively…I am just curious.

Let's get real ~ had the saints kicked those 2 field goals & made them + go down the field on the last drive like they did & kick another field goal ~ the final score would have been 43-42 saints...

These are my 2 NFC teams ~ it just sucks that one had 2 lose ~ this game may have been a preview to the NFC Championship game if life go on that far...!!!...

The defenses did not suck ~ it was that ELITE QB's picked them apart ~ not many teams will score like these 2 did on each other...!!!...

Hawk made the best play of his career and got flagged! He hit the ball before the WR! But Defense let NO score 34 points! Unacceptable! The team needs D to shut down teams and not put it on Rodgers to keep scoring. Defense has a long way to go, NOs defense looked bad too! Defense didnt win the championship last year, Rodgers did!

It never even should have come down to that. The play before was not interference, it was a clean knockdown by Hawk on a super athletic move. He didn't even touch the receiver until after he deflected the ball away.
