In the thick of the NFC playoff race, the Green Bay Packers are preparing to play the rest of the season without two stalwarts on their formidable defense.

While the Detroit Lions don’t have the same postseason aspirations, they might have to play this Thanksgiving Day game without the reigning NFC player of the week.

The banged-up Packers will rely on a makeshift defense Thursday when they try to continue their dominance over a Lions team that will likely be without Matthew Stafford(notes), who was injured while leading his team to exciting comeback win last week.

Green Bay (6-4) ranks first in the NFL in total defense, allowing an average of 295.8 yards, but that unit took two major hits when cornerback Al Harris(notes) and linebacker Aaron Kampman(notes) were hurt on separate plays in the second half of Sunday’s 30-24 win over San Francisco.

Without those two veterans in the lineup, the Packers struggled to shut down the 49ers, allowing 21 second-half points.

Green Bay is going to have to get accustomed to playing without Harris and Kampman, as coach Mike McCarthy said Monday that both will have season-ending knee surgery.

“Not seeing ’74’ and ’31’ in the huddle, it’s going to be different,” McCarthy said. “It’s a challenge to our players, they’re going to have to step up and get ready in a short week for Detroit.”

McCarthy said Harris, a standout player known for his physical coverage, will be replaced by No. 3 cornerback Tramon Williams(notes) while seventh-round rookie Brad Jones(notes) will likely take Williams’ place.

Green Bay’s makeshift defense will likely not have to face Stafford, who dislocated his left shoulder in Sunday’s 38-37 win over Cleveland, which snapped the Lions’ six-game losing streak.

“It’s unlikely that he’s going to play, but we’ll see,” Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said. “It’s a deal if it gets better in a couple of days and it’s not as painful, he’ll be able to get out there.”

It would be a big blow for the Lions (2-8) if Stafford couldn’t play, considering the No. 1 pick of this year’s draft is coming off the best performance of his young career. Stafford set an NFL rookie passing record with 422 yards Sunday and became the youngest player to throw five touchdowns in a game.

The fifth TD was a game-tying 1-yard pass to Brandon Pettigrew(notes) with no time left on the clock. Jason Hanson’s(notes) extra point gave Detroit the win.

The Lions got that untimed play because Cleveland safety Hank Poteat(notes) was called for pass interference in the end zone when Stafford heaved a desperation attempt. Stafford was crushed beneath a defender after throwing that ball and came to the sideline with the shoulder injury, but he was able to return because the Browns stopped the game with a timeout. Daunte Culpepper(notes) briefly took the field in Stafford’s place but never had to take a snap.

Culpepper would likely make his third start of the season if Stafford can’t go. The 11-year veteran made two starts when Stafford was out earlier this year with a right knee injury, including a 26-0 loss at Green Bay on Oct. 18, Detroit’s eighth straight loss in the series. Culpepper was 6 of 14 for 48 yards with one interception in that game.

Dynamic wide receiver Calvin Johnson(notes) also missed the first meeting with the Packers because of hand and knee injuries and could miss this contest for the same reasons.

Johnson, who had a career-best 161 yards receiving and a 75-yard TD Sunday, has missed two games this year because of these nagging injuries.

Without Stafford and Johnson, the Lions could have a hard time ending their recent Thanksgiving Day woes.

Detroit has been outscored by an average of 23.4 points in losing its last five Thanksgiving Day games since defeating the Packers 22-14 on Nov. 27, 2003. The Lions lost to Tennessee 47-10 last Thanksgiving.

While Detroit’s offense might be missing some key components, Green Bay’s offense is rolling after racking up a season-best 484 yards Sunday.

Led by Aaron Rodgers(notes), who completed 32 of 45 passes for 344 yards with two touchdowns against the 49ers, the Packers are fourth in the NFL in total offense, averaging 403.4 yards, and eighth in scoring offense, averaging 26.2 points.

Green Bay shouldn’t have much trouble moving the ball against a Detroit team that ranks last in scoring defense (30.1) and 31st in total defense (401.9).

Rodgers threw for 358 yards with two touchdowns and one pick against the Lions last month while Ryan Grant(notes) rushed for 90 yards

In three career games against Detroit, Rodgers has passed for 994 yards with eight touchdowns and one interception.

    Another fact:

We won't always have Favre, but we'll always have Adrian Peterson.

Vikings will still win, even with no Favre in the future.

    Vikings rule.

    Forever.

PJG, we're aware that Favre can't play forever. Most likely, he'll give us a Super Bowl ring before he goes.

You think the Vikings are gonna be sorry when Favre's gone, PJG?? You're WRONG, DEAD WRONG!

Remember last year, when the Vikings won the division, went 10-6, and made the playoffs with NO BRETT FAVRE??

    Vikings will never lose hope.

Its not all about Favre PJG, its about the team. Plus we didn't have Favre in the 1960s and 1970s, and we came close to a Super Bowl Championship 4 times and won the NFL Championship once. Keep the predictions coming though. =D
    GO VIKINGS!

    Dave and Bruno -
Thank you for the kind words. I do enjoy good football conversations, no matter what side of the fence we're on. Although I am guilty of the name calling and such myself sometimes, I would much rather have an intelligent conversation.

    csurf-
Wow man, I try to have a good conversation with you for once and you prove to the world once again that you're nothing but a jerk and internet troll. Other Packer fans like Dave and Bruno could see what I was getting at, but you on the other hand put on your blinders and completely ignore my point, throwing some insults in for good measure. I know both Vikings and Packer fans have their good and bad elements on these blogs, but you my friend, are certainly the lowest of the low on your end of the border battle.

GO VIKINGS - (1969 NFL Champions whether csurf like it or not!)

Surf, having history is what I just explained, you clown.

At least we Vikes fans have the sense enough to look past the history (whether good or bad) and find ways to win so that we can get our 1st championship ring. For you Packers fans to keep looking back on your previous 3 titles isn't gonna help guys win. If yall had sense, yall would stop looking on the past and focus on winning a fourth one.

    Neither are the Vikes.
It's not living in the past. It's called having history which the Vikes don't have.

Surf, you an idiot. You Packers fans are as redundant as ever.

You guys are always living in the past.

The Pack's 3 SB wins are history.

The Vikes 4 SB losses are history.

Who knows, who cares, if the packers are making the playoffs? But they damn sho not going to Superbowl XLIV.

This is gonna be a new beginning for the Vikings. I understand the facts perfectly, Surf, no need to waste your time explaining.

Vikes go all the way. Point proven.

    Rodney @ # 406,
I realize you are an illiterate, uneducated, misinformed Vikings fan from the losing state of Minnesota. But I will give this one more try. When the 2 leagues agreed to play the SB in 1966, the winner of this game was to be the league champion, hence the trophy & team rings. Winning the NFL or AFL was no longer considered to be world champs. A team had to win the SB to get that title. GB WON the SB in 1966 & 1967 making them world champs. The Vikes LOST their SB in 1969 making them the runnerup. NO TROPHY & TEAM RINGS WERE GIVEN TO THEM.
Stop with your stupid bullsh!t and accept the fact that your boys have yet to win a world championship.
I will update my post so even morons like you, Dan G, GROT, & the King can understand.

GB 3X SB CHAMPS & 12X WORLD CHAMPS
MIN ZERO & ZERO PLUS 4X SB LOSERS

    READ IT AND WEEP

    Hey King @ # 404,
You just keep telling yourself that the Pack won't make the playoffs. We will be there.

    thanx bruno.

a lot of the problem in these blogs is that its hard to read emotion. you cant read how someone is saying something, pitch and tone of voice for instants. peope get offended and go nuts. All in all, i do think that even though people get outa control they generaly respect the teams(maybe not the fans so much)

    Rodney Danger and Dave,

I applaud both of you. I really do. I'm sincere in saying this. Your interaction is how it should be for blogs like this. Even though you root for different teams (rivals even), you have a very civil, intelligent conversation. There was no name calling, insults, etc. Just the facts with some personal interpretation to make it all come together. It gives off a very positive vibe. Many times you come into these blogs and it's just dripping with negativity and immaturity (Fudge Packers, ViQueens, Gay Bay Pukers, Slackers, Purple Dick Eaters, etc. etc.) when there really doesn't need to be. By how you talk, I think I would really enjoy a conversation about football with both of you (yes, even you Rodney, a Viking fan). I'm as guilty as any for getting rather passionate about what I talk about regarding Green Bay, but I do try my best not to get into name calling. If this is how all blogs could be, I would probably post more. But alas, it's very difficult when you post something positive about your favorite team and someone busts in, reads it, and interprets it as being against their team. It really doesn't have to be that way. Just because I think Aaron Rodgers is a good QB doesn't mean I think Brett Favre is terrible (although I still do believe he will make mistakes down the stretch like he always has - he wouldn't be Brett Favre if he didn't try to gun sling the ball around and get into trouble at times). And because Brett is on a different teams these days, there's really no need to mention him at all in a Packer blog (unless they talk about him coming back to retire or something in the article).

So, I say kudos to both of you. If more posters were like you, these blogs would be a much better place.

There we go, now we're on the same page, heh.
Overall what I was saying was in response to something csurf posted on the Vikings blog yesterday about "the Packers having 12 NFL Championships and 3 Super Bowl Rings compared to the Vikings big fat zero" when the Vikes do have that one NFL Championship from 1969.

my mistake on this whole thing, they didnt count those twice. its not 10-3 or 12-3. its 12 total. NFL champs-1929, 1930, 1931, 1936, 1939, 1944, 1961, 1962, 1965, NFL champs and super bowl champs-1966, 1967, NFC champ and super bowl champs-1996. so that is correct.
