According to special teams coordinator Greg McMahon, the Saints did not merely re-sign 42-year old John Kasay for insurance reasons in case Hartley was not fully healed from the injury that sidelined him last year, but rather plan on holding and open competition for kicking duties, reports the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Recommendation: If Hartley thought that the starting kicking spot was simply going to be handed to him after missing all of last season, he was sorely mistaken. Kasay excelled in Hartley's absence, and while the Saints would prefer Hartley win the job given the significant difference in ages between the players, he will have to seize the opportunity in training camp.
