QBs Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn continue to battle for No. 2. Three days after head coach Mike McCarthy declared that Flynn was "closing the gap" on Brohm for the honors of backing up Aaron Rodgers, neither of the two rookies distinguished himself in the Packers' 34-6 exhibition loss at San Francisco on Aug. 16. Both guys turned the ball over on a fumble, and Brohm nearly had a pass intercepted for the second straight game. Flynn was the better of the two in the preseason-opening, 20-17 loss against Cincinnati on Aug. 11, engineering a 12-play, 62-yard scoring drive late in the game that he capped with an 11-yard touchdown throw to running back Kregg Lumpkin. Brohm, who came to the team with more hype as a second-round draft pick out of Louisville, has been shaky since the outset of training camp, with fits of indecision in the pocket and poor throws. He's completed only 12 of 26 passes for 103 yards in the two preseason games. Flynn, a seventh-round draftee from LSU, has been more decisive with his reads and shown good poise under pressure. His preseason numbers are better than Brohm's: 17 of 27 for 130 yards. "I think Matt's getting more comfortable (with the offense)," McCarthy said. "Brian was more comfortable quicker in the earlier part, as far as the OTAs, understanding what we're doing. I think they're both good, young prospects." McCarthy reiterated after the loss to the 49ers that the team isn't likely to bring in a veteran quarterback to compete for the No. 2 job.
