Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers, reports Oakland Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell arrived at training camp at 269 pounds, the same weight he was during offseason workouts. Russell said he is in shape because he is responsible for the welfare of a lot of people. "Just knowing that you're able and capable, it's pretty good to keep the body in shape," Russell said. "Just by being a quarterback, you got to look at it: Everybody on the team gets paid off of what I do and the rest of the team does. I hate to say it but I'm accountable for a lot of the guys' families." |

QB JaMarcus Russell can plainly be evaluated as having prototype size. But the revelation concerning Russell during minicamp and organized team activity sessions which were available to the media was that he can move, too.
Russell is not going to be a running quarterback in the manner of a healthy Daunte Culpepper, or say, a vintage Rich Gannon. But he takes big, athletic strides, can execute rollouts and bootlegs, and is strong enough to shake off the first hit and get off a pass.
Buying time for himself is a great quality, and allows for the possibility of the occasional broken play for a big gain. |
