May 20 Smith will begin offseason training activities at outside linebacker according to general manager Mickey Loomis, reports Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. The Saints will be switching to a 3-4 defense in 2013 under new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.
Recommendation: For years Smith made up for being only a mediocre pass rusher by posting solid tackle numbers at the defensive end position, and many speculated that a move to outside linebacker would make sense in the team's new 3-4 alignment. Loomis' comments seem to confirm that speculation. While Smith has lacked burst for a few years now entering his 10th year in the league, the position switch makes him an intriguing IDP option.
