Seattle Vs. San Diego Game Opens NFL Preseason: A Fan’s Outlook
The Seattle Seahawks and the San Diego Chargers help open up the 2011 NFL preseason with a game on Thursday, August 11. Qualcomm Stadium will play host to the game and ESPN will be providing live coverage. This will not just be the first game for the Seahawks this preseason, but the first one that ESPN will be reporting on for the 2011 season.
It's definitely going to be interesting to see what the new-look Seahawks can do on the field, and whether the offseason acquisitions will mesh well together right away. Most of the new players on the team weren't able to report to training camp until Thursday, August 3, meaning the team will have been together just over a week at game time. That's not a long time to get the plays memorized, but it's the same predicament for all NFL teams this year.
Seeing Tarvaris Jackson(notes), Sidney Rice(notes), and Zach Miller on the field for the first time could make this a must-see event for all Seahawks fans. It is certainly going to be an exciting first quarter at least, which is probably about as long as we will see any of the main players on the roster. After that, Charlie Whitehurst(notes) will probably get some reps before Josh Portis(notes) (third string quarterback) brings the show home. Since it is anyone's guess how any of the three quarterbacks will perform, it could still be worth tuning in during the fourth quarter, which is rare during the preseason.
Game time will be 5 pm PT for the Seahawks, which is a pretty early start time during the preseason on the West Coast. Hopefully the weather doesn't play too much of a part in the game, because it is expected to be quite warm in Southern California. Either way, the players will probably be looking forward to a later start time in week two of the NFL preseason. That game will be played at CenturyLink Field at 7 pm PT on Saturday, August 20. The Minnesota Vikings come to town for the game, giving Jackson and Rice a quick look back at their former franchise.
It's exciting that Seahawks football is finally here, even if it is still just a part of the 2011 NFL preseason. Nevertheless, it is going to be our first glimpse at a host of high-level talent that has been brought in to take this team back to the postseason.

*Ryan Christopher DeVault is a lifelong fan of the Seattle Seahawks that continues to hold out hope that the team is heading in the right direction with a new coach, a weak NFC West, and some great young players on defense.
