Top Five Cards from the 1948 NFL Leaf Set, the Most Valuable NFL Card Set

Topps, a prominent trading card company, has recently announced a deal with the NFL Players Association. For two decades now, Topps and the NFL Players Association have partnered, allowing Topps to produce some of the most popular NFL trading cards. News of the deal broke on March 28, 2012, but fans will have to wait for NFL cards.

Just before the 2012 NFL season kicks off, fans will be able to see Robert Griffin III, Andrew Luck, Trent Richardson, and Justin Blackmon on Topps sports cards.

Until the new Topps cards are released, here is a peek at the most valuable NFL card set ever. The 1948 leaf set is the most valuable year, and has several cards that rank among the most expensive NFL Cards.

Here are the five most valuable cards from the NFL's 1948 season. Perhaps, several decades from now, the 2012 Topps rookie cards will be among the most expensive.

5. Roy Steiner's 1948 Leaf with Red Jersey ($19,200)

Despite only spending two years in the NFL, Roy Steiner's card is among the most valuable NFL cards. Roy Steiner is more known for his days at Alabama than in the NFL. Yet, his card is a relic from the NFL's early days.

4. Bob Waterfield's 1948 Leaf PSA 8.5 ($31,600)

Bob Waterfield was a beloved quarterback with the Rams. By leading comebacks, he continually excited Rams fans. He is now in the Football Hall of Fame, and his card is among the most expensive in the NFL.

3. Sammy Baugh's 1948 Leaf SGC 96 ($38,000)

Sammy Baugh's card is the third from the 1948 leaf set, making this the most valuable year in NFL card history. There will likely never again be a player like Sammy Baugh. He excelled both as a quarterback and a punter.

2. Charles Bednarik's 1948 Leaf PSA 8 ($38,600)

Charles Bednarik was one of the most intimidating tacklers of all time. His card is the most expensive of all defensive NFL player cards. He is in both the College Football Hall of Fame and Football Hall of Fame.

1. Sid Luckman's 1948 Leaf with Yellow Background ($71,800)

Bears fans might argue that Sid Luckman was the greatest NFL quarterback of all time; he certainly was the best Chicago Bears quarterback ever. Sid Luckman's card was issued was in a variety of colors. Ones with a yellow background are the rarest and most valuable of the 1948 leaf set. It also is the second-most NFL card of any year.
