Troy Aikman Says Tony Romo Will Win a Super Bowl for Dallas Cowboys: A Fan’s Take
A lot of people like to talk down about Dallas Cowboys' quarterback Tony Romo. A lot of fans like to blame him for the Cowboys' struggles, even when he is playing well and the mistakes are others. For some reason, fans still blame Romo. Even former Cowboys, like Deion Sanders, likes to talk about how Dallas will not win a Super Bowl with Romo at quarterback.
Finally, someone stood up for Romo and this voice is a lot more important than Neon Deion. In an interview with the Brownsville Herald, Troy Aikman said that Romo is better than he was.
"I think Tony already is a better quarterback than I was," Aikman said. "I know how quarterbacks are judged but as far as his play-making ability and the things that he is capable of doing, he is a far more athletic quarterback, capable of making more plays than I ever was able to. He has a good team around him and hopefully, and I believe this will happen, I believe that he will win a Super Bowl before he is done playing."
All I can say is wow.
I don't think Aikman believes that Romo ranks higher than him in the realm of historical quarterbacks. Romo is not even second place in Dallas' history because Roger Staubach played there as well. However, what Aikman might have meant is that, technically, Romo is a better quarterback than he was. Romo can do more, Romo can make more plays and Romo has something Aikman didn't have in the realm of playing skills.
However, Aikman was a winner. When the postseason rolled around, Aikman was better than almost any quarterback in the NFL. Aikman could win Super Bowls and that makes him a greater quarterback than Romo. But, winning Super Bowls isn't everything. You can't say Dan Marino and Dan Fouts were not two of the best quarterbacks in NFL history and neither man ever won a Super Bowl.
Aikman did say that he believes Romo will one day win a Super Bowl. The odds are against Romo. The odds are also against Philip Rivers, Matthew Stafford, Cam Newton, Matt Ryan and just about every other quarterback in the NFL. One team will win the Super Bowl each year and that means that over 20 quarterbacks will play their entire NFL career without ever winning a Super Bowl.
There are some teams, like the Dallas Cowboys, that has a fan base that expects to win the Super Bowl every year. The reason for that is because of Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman. If Romo never wins a Super Bowl, he will be judged against those that came before him. It is the downfall to playing for America's Team.
However, if you listen to Troy Aikman, Romo will win a Super Bowl before he is done in Dallas. I'll take Aikman's word over Prime Time's any day of the week.
