Raiders Hire Jason Tarver as Defensive Coordinator: Fan Reaction

So far this offseason, the Oakland Raiders have made a lot of changes, changes that may not have been able to be made if Al Davis were still alive. I'm not saying that Al Davis passing away was the best thing to ever happen to the Oakland Raiders because he was revolutionary in the way he led his team, but the Raiders will now have an opportunity to function like the other 31 NFL teams.

Since the Raiders' season ended on Sunday, January 1 there have been many changes happening within the organization to help improve it. The Raiders brought in GM Reggie McKenzie, former VP of Football Operations for the Green Bay Packers. McKenzie in turn hired Dennis Allen, a defensive-minded coach, who had made an impression on several NFL coaches, including Sean Peyton of the New Orleans Saints. Once Allen was aboard, he brought on several staff members including Greg Knapp as offensive coordinator, Steve Hoffman as special teams coordinator, and brought back Kelly Skipper as running backs coach.

The Raiders' interests then turned to Stanford co-defensive coordinator Jason Tarver. Tarver joined Stanford after working with the 49ers from 2001-2010 as a running backs coach, inside linebackers coach, and offensive assistant.

With Chuck Bresnahan's contract not being renewed when it expired on January 15, the Raiders were actively looking for a new defensive coordinator. Greg Manusky, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers, interviewed for the position, but instead joined the Indianapolis Colts as their defensive coordinator.

As of February 6, the Raiders have hired Jason Tarver as their defensive coordinator.

I suppose the Raiders will be in good hands with Tarver, who has a lot of NFL experience as a coach. One of the things I noted about Tarver was that he has a master's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology - indicating that he has a sharp mind. I really think that someone who is able to coach at the NFL level, having played in college himself for Santa Clara and West Valley College, and has those kinds of credentials will be strong as a defensive coordinator.

The overlying factor for me, however, is his NFL experience with the 49ers. I think the Raiders will be happy with their decision to hire Jason Tarver. Especially because with Tarver being so young - he's only 37 - and like head coach Dennis Allen, will be around for some time to help improve a Raiders' defense that has been lacking.

I guess we are going to the 3-4 with the hire of this guy. I hope the hold on to the 4-3 Scheme also though.

I too wanted an experienced DC (someone like Del Rio), until Dennis Allen was hired. Allen has coached in many positions on the defensive side of the ball, including DC. With Allen as HC, this a great move to get Tarver. We get an experienced DC and a guy (Tarver) who excels in the X's and O's. I see Oakland's defense improving greatly this coming season. The offensive side is also in good hands, not great hands, but good hands.

The key will be keeping this group together to provide (finally) some consistency in the coaching staff. The outlook is good.

Never heard of this guys... so I guess I cant really judge this until the season starts... I was just hoping we would get a proven DC. In any case I am happy to see Bresnahan gone.

I'm getting tired of people saying that the Raiders have all the players to be good but just can't put it all together. I don't think the individual players are that good to begin with. This reminds of when Jimmy Johnson took over the Cowboys team and made a bold evaluation that his players just weren't that good. Many players had fast 40 yd time but when they put the full pads on, he realized that they were not that fast at all. This is what the Raider players are like. They boast all those players on offense and defense who are lightning fast but I don't see those players running away from others or catching them on defense. Hopefully, the new coaches make the right evaluations and make the necessary personnel changes to get better. I don't think anyone on defense should be a lock to stay including Seymore who cost the team just as much as he helps the team.

Hell yeah, brother. I like the direction we're going. I like that we're looking at other things than simply years of coaching experience, like leadership skills and football IQ. We Raider fans might need to be a bit patient, but if we wait this out a couple years we should see this coaching staff really pay off.

Even if the Raiders played without pads and a helmet, they would still get called for un-necessary roughness......the league reps and officials are bios. That is why they lead the league in penalties every year. Same old Bullshit ...........

One thing---the linemen need to tackle instead of trying to block the runner to the ground. They teach you how to tackle in middle school and most of the linemen forgot what they were supposed to learn at a young age. If they cannot tackle, get rid of them. Don't let them throw another year away just because they are too lazy to tackle.

It horrifies me to think the writer wants the Raiders "to function like the other 31 NFL teams." That's the most un-Raider comment I've ever heard. Most of the fun of being a Raider fan is that we've NEVER BEEN like the other 31 teams...embrace the mystique, Merhwein. Don't wish the Raiders into the vanilla status quo...playing it safe is not the Raid-uhs...

Your heresy aside, decent article. I'm excited because Tarver actually has a good defensive football mind. Now let's see if he can motivate our talent, because Breshnehan and H. Jackson could only get about 4 brilliant games out of our defense. We have the defensive personnel to dominate most games but I felt these guys gave up when the chips were down. It's Tarver time---GO RAIDERS!!!

and P.S.--Let's bring back Jason Campbell--he kept the defense rested and ready...

he helped create the 49er D, he has degrees in multiple fields and he is 37, this is starting to get good. Now will they play for him on the Defensive side of things also will DMC stay healthy for a full season, will we seek help on our D line which we need IMO. will we sure up the secondary with the addition of a free agent CB? will they be able to steal that awesome reciever away from SD in the free agent market? these questions and more will be answered starting in sept. IMO we are Superbowl bound. we have just as much talent on our roster as any team in the AFC. We have a QB who has the oppertunity to prove that picking him up was not a mistake and we have arguably the best RB in the game as well as a top ten backup for him. our FB is a pass catching beast and the O line can block. question marks will the recievers make more of those clutch catches.

Without half the penalty flags, the Raiders would have probly won 4-5 more games? With these new faces and attitudes, maybe they can do what no-one else could do for the last 12 seasons, build a team of professional minded players, who not only want to win, but know how to win! Raider fan since "75" Ive been waiting 29 years for another ring, I believe if Al Davis had died about 20 years ago, we would have a couple more!

There's enough talent on this defense to build a winner. With a defensive-minded coach and an experienced DC like Tarver, we will absolutely see an improved defensive ranking next year.

Everyone can whine all they want about the Palmer trade, but I still think it's a good one. Palmer is NOT washed up, just as Rich Gannon was NOT washed up when he took us to the superbowl back in 2002 at age 36! I think Palmer and Gannon are totally on par with each at the same point in their careers. With a full off-season and pre-season to work with together as a cohesive unit, and a healthy DMC, we will have a very strong offense.

The AFC West has a very tough schedule next year outside the division, so I'd temper expectations for winning more than about 10 games, at best, but I think we win the division for sure!

Problem is that he's not on the field to make tackles. So it doesn't matter who they hire or what scheme they run. The Raiders just need to tackle and of course the yellow flags.

Watch out AFC West. Jason Tarver was instrumental in setting up the 49ers D of today, and now he's going to create another experiment at Oakland. I think the Raiders did good in hiring the smartest defensive mind out there.
