Yahoo! Contributor NetworkRaiders Hire Jason Tarver as Defensive Coordinator: Fan Reaction
So far this offseason, the Oakland Raiders have made a lot of changes, changes that may not have been able to be made if Al Davis were still alive. I'm not saying that Al Davis passing away was the best thing to ever happen to the Oakland Raiders because he was revolutionary in the way he led his team, but the Raiders will now have an opportunity to function like the other 31 NFL teams.
Since the Raiders' season ended on Sunday, January 1 there have been many changes happening within the organization to help improve it. The Raiders brought in GM Reggie McKenzie, former VP of Football Operations for the Green Bay Packers. McKenzie in turn hired Dennis Allen, a defensive-minded coach, who had made an impression on several NFL coaches, including Sean Peyton of the New Orleans Saints. Once Allen was aboard, he brought on several staff members including Greg Knapp as offensive coordinator, Steve Hoffman as special teams coordinator, and brought back Kelly Skipper as running backs coach.
The Raiders' interests then turned to Stanford co-defensive coordinator Jason Tarver. Tarver joined Stanford after working with the 49ers from 2001-2010 as a running backs coach, inside linebackers coach, and offensive assistant.
With Chuck Bresnahan's contract not being renewed when it expired on January 15, the Raiders were actively looking for a new defensive coordinator. Greg Manusky, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers, interviewed for the position, but instead joined the Indianapolis Colts as their defensive coordinator.
As of February 6, the Raiders have hired Jason Tarver as their defensive coordinator.
I suppose the Raiders will be in good hands with Tarver, who has a lot of NFL experience as a coach. One of the things I noted about Tarver was that he has a master's degree in biochemistry and molecular biology - indicating that he has a sharp mind. I really think that someone who is able to coach at the NFL level, having played in college himself for Santa Clara and West Valley College, and has those kinds of credentials will be strong as a defensive coordinator.
The overlying factor for me, however, is his NFL experience with the 49ers. I think the Raiders will be happy with their decision to hire Jason Tarver. Especially because with Tarver being so young - he's only 37 - and like head coach Dennis Allen, will be around for some time to help improve a Raiders' defense that has been lacking.

His one fault, admittedly, as many of his friends and family would say, is his love for the Los Angeles Lakers. Growing up, Magic Johnson was his favorite basketball player and he fell in love with the team. He chalks it up to, "Not knowing any better".
