December Delivers Wins for Chargers, Lions Preview: Fan’s Perspective
Maybe the San Diego Chargers have a direct line to Santa because December definitely seems to be their month. Either that or Santa just takes pity on the fans and figures they deserve to see their team win for a few games.
Either way, with a 23-2 record for games in December since 2006, the Chargers are close to unstoppable in the final month of the regular season. The question is, will it continue for these final games against the Detroit Lions and the Oakland Raiders?
Looking at the stats for the Christmas Eve game against the Detroit Lions, both teams are well matched and I think it is going to prove to be a close game, with the end result possibly being decided by a field goal. The Lions are posting an average 380.1 yards while the Chargers have an average 390.0 yards. When it comes to points, the Chargers have scored an average 25.6 while the Lions have scored an average 28.2.
One advantage for the Chargers will be Ryan Matthews who is tied with LeSean McCoy and Matt Forte for the highest yards per rush attempt average. The Lions defense currently ranks 27th in the NFL and has allowed an average of 135.8 rushing yards.
As far as the Chargers defense, they currently rank sixth when it comes to passing. The key for them is going to be to stop WR Calvin Johnson who is currently ranked fourth in receiving yards with 1,335 and 81 receptions and third in touchdowns with 14.
Unfortunately with the other AFC West matchups scheduled, it is not looking good for the Chargers to take the top spot. With the Denver Broncos favored against the Buffalo Bills it will all ride on the outcome of the Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs game. If Denver can pull off the win and the Chiefs top the Raiders, the Broncos can clinch the top spot.
However, this is football and as we saw on December 18th when the undefeated Green Bay Packers fell to the Chiefs and the Indianapolis Colts have now won two games, anything is possible so the Chargers are not out of the picture yet. And remember, it is December and Santa's team seems to be the Chargers.
