Doug Baldwin Deserves Serious Rookie of the Year Consideration: A Fan’s Outlook

The Seattle Seahawks won again on Monday night (Dec. 12), this time beating up on division rival St. Louis. The Rams really didn't stand a chance in the game, but it was receiver Doug Baldwin who had the best game of the night. He performed spectacularly on offense as well as special teams, putting a definite stamp on the game as well as highlighting how good he has been this season.

In the game, Baldwin caught 7 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. He was the best receiver in the game, posting more yards than Brandon Lloyd, Steven Jackson or Mike Williams. He also had a kick return for 37 yards, blocked a punt that resulted in a Seahawks touchdown and got down field on a Seahawks punt to catch the ball and down it at the 6-yard line. It's not a stretch to say that this may have been his best overall game of the season.

In his rookie year with the Seahawks, Baldwin now has 45 catches for 718 yards and 3 touchdowns. Those are pretty good statistics for a receiver that wasn't one of the primary options for the team coming out of training camp. Sidney Rice and Mike Williams got the chance to command most of the playing time at the receiver positions, but Baldwin has really stepped up for the Seahawks . Not only has he been a catalyst on the offensive side of the ball, he has been nothing short of spectacular with his special teams play.

It is very clear to everyone in Seattle that Baldwin should get strong consideration for Rookie of the Year honors on offense. He certainly won't win it over Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, but he definitely deserves a slot on the All-Rookie team for the NFL this year. His work on special teams is also good enough for a spot on the Pro Bowl roster, but it's also hard to fathom that the national spotlight will ever get placed on him in that regard. Placing in the Pacific Northwest comes with a downside, and it is getting looked past for other players on the East Coast that simply can't hold a candle to him.

The Seahawks have a great asset with Baldwin and hopefully he is around for many years to come.
