Please Don’t Let the Minnesota Vikings Move to L.A
To put it simply, I don't want to root for the Los Angeles Vikings.
I love the Minnesota Vikings as much as Jared Allen(notes) loves to sack quarterbacks. I've been a huge fan since I was nine-years old and my devotion to the purple and gold has never swayed. If I ever, for some strange reason, had the impulse to get a tattoo, it would probably be the Vikings logo. No matter where life or my young sports journalism career takes me, I will always be a diehard Vikings supporter. All of the while living in lovely California, right outside of Los Angeles.
With that being said, I would be devastated and utterly disappointed if the Vikings ended up being one of the NFL teams that moves to L.A.
I reiterate: I have been and always will be a MINNESOTA Vikings fan. I don't want to be a Los Angeles Vikings fan. Although I would be forced to embrace the change, it's definitely not something I would welcome with open arms. L.A. already stole one team from Minnesota when we brought over the Lakers, so why do we need another purple and gold team calling this city home? Plus, the Los Angeles Vikings sounds almost as oxymoronic as the Los Angeles Lakers does.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of both teams and do my best to wear the Vikings/Lakers purple with pride, but it isn't exactly my first choice when it comes to colors. I feel like L.A. doesn't need any more purple and gold than it already gets from the Lakers. People would start making No. 24 Kobe Bryant football jerseys or No. 28 Adrian Peterson basketball jerseys. There's no need to even get ourselves into a situation where that type of nonsense could potentially occur.
As an aspiring sports journalist, I've pondered the possibility of my favorite NFL team moving to within 50 miles of me and how many opportunities that would open up. Not only would I get to cover my favorite team, but I'd be able to do it from the state I grew up in. If I ever landed a gig covering the team full-time, I wouldn't have to move to Minnesota, which sounds intimidating considering the huge difference in climate. I'd be able to go to games where I'm not some random Vikings fan in a sea of San Diego Chargers faithful (yes, I was there on Sep. 11, 2011). Despite all of these advantages to them being the L.A. Vikings from my standpoint, I can't accept it.
No matter what it takes, the Minnesota local government needs to nip this problem in the bud before the state losses another team to L.A. What remains of the lease on the Metrodome is slowly melting away and some sort of solution needs to materialize before the final seconds tick away.
Get it done Minnesota!
