San Francisco 49ers Could Clinch NFC West Before Thanksgiving: Fan’s Take
Could the San Francisco 49ers actually accomplish a goal they have not achieved since 2002 at an unbelievable pace?
According to Mike Sando of ESPN.com, the 49ers can potentially clinch the NFC West by Week 11 on Nov. 20, or four days before Thanksgiving. Currently 6-1, the 49ers are four games ahead of the Seattle Seahawks (2-5) and five games ahead of the Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams (both 1-6). With the 49ers set to face the Baltimore Ravens on a Thanksgiving matchup featuring the Harbaugh brothers, is it feasible to believe that the 49ers reach their postseason goal in record time?
After starting the season with a fast start, the Redskins have since simmered down and were most recently shutout by the Buffalo Bills. In the other two games involving NFC West teams, the Cowboys should beat the Seahawks and the Arizona/St. Louis game is a tossup.
The toughest 49er game in the coming weeks, the Giants are currently leading a competitive NFC East and are balanced on offense and defense. While the Seahawks and Cardinals are probably going to be big underdogs in their respective games, the Rams have a good shot at beating a Browns team in disarray on offense.
Hypothetical scenario: 49ers beat Cardinals, Rams beat Seahawks
In a week where the four teams face each other in divisional games, this is the easiest of the three wins for the 49ers. With the Cardinals in disarray, the questionable scenario is seeing the Rams defeat the Seahawks. While the Rams most recently proved their ability to beat great teams like the New Orleans Saints, this matchup will be a tossup by the time Week 11 comes around.
After looking at the one scenario the 49ers can clinch the NFC West in Week 11, it is highly unlikely that the 49ers will clinch the division by Thanksgiving. While is very reasonable for the team to win their next three weeks and be 9-1 by Thanksgiving, there are too many games that are winnable for their division rivals. With tossup matchups in Week 9 between the Cardinals and Rams, Week 10 between the Rams and Browns, and Week 11 between the Rams and Seahawks, there are too many variables affecting the likelihood of an NFC West title by Week 11.
