Could Tim Tebow Be What Religion Really Needs? A Fan’s Perspective

While Denver Broncos fans continue to debate whether Tim Tebow(notes) is the quarterback that is going to make a difference or not, Tebow Mania is in full swing across the country. Tim Tebow's popularity is growing and a new fad, known as "Tebowing" is popping up all over. But what the heck is "Tebowing" and what does it really mean?

Tebowing

According to the Tebowing website, "Tebowing" is defined as getting down on one knee and praying, no matter where you are or who may be around you. The website shows submitted images of people Tebowing in various locations during various events, including a child in his pajamas.

Tim Tebow's Faith

Those who know anything about Tim Tebow know that he is very open about his faith and belief in God and Jesus Christ. He was known throughout his collegiate career for wearing Bible verses within the black patches under his eyes. He thanks God for the success of his football career and credits his faith as the motivation for starting the Tim Tebow Foundation which helps people all over the world.

A Loss of Faith

In America today, with the increasing unemployment and foreclosure rates, many Americans have lost their faith and this seems to be a worldwide trend. A study published in 2011 by researchers at the University of Arizona and Northwestern University showed that religion and religious affiliations are on the decline. People seem to be losing hope and faith, regardless of which religion they affiliate themselves with.

The younger generation seem to be the ones most affected by this loss of religion. ABC News reported back in 2009 that research showed that young Americans were less likely to go to church than their parents or grandparents.

Improving the Faith

With this decline in faith and young people attending church, having a top NFL star showing pride in his beliefs may be just what the churches in America need to increase attendance and strengthen the faith of young Americans. This "Tebowing" action that is growing in popularity shows young Americans that praying and giving thanks to God is acceptable no matter where you are.

While Denver Broncos fans continue to debate the pros and cons of having Tebow as a quarterback, the churches in America may be thanking God for the work that he is doing.
