Jets Kenrick Ellis’ Felony Trial Postponed Until February 2012: A Fan’s View
New York Jets' defensive tackle, Kenrick Ellis(notes), had his felony trial postponed until after the end of the 2011 NFL season. Ellis is facing felony charges that occurred during an incident on campus at Hampton University. The original trial date was July 12, 2011.
The Star-Ledger reports that Kenrick Ellis is facing malicious wounding felony charges. His trial started on July 12, 2011. It was continued to November 28, 2011. Now, it is postponed to February 7, 2012—just two days after the Super Bowl. No reason was given for why the trial was postponed. If he is convicted, Ellis could see up to 20 years in prison.
ESPN reported that Ellis broke the nose and jaw of a man during an incident at Hampton University in April 2011. The incident was allegedly over a woman.
Impact on the Jets
If the November 28 trial date was to occur, it could have been an issue for New York. This is smack in the middle of the season and losing Ellis would have a negative impact on the defense. He was responsible for three tackles in his NFL debut game against the Miami Dolphins.
Pushing the trial date to February 2012, allows Ellis to stay focused on football. If he is convicted in February, his time in the NFL will come to an end. That will leave a hole for the Jets to fill for the 2012 season.
About Kenrick Ellis
Ellis made his first official NFL appearance in game six against Miami Dolphins. He has been inactive all season, although he played during the preseason. 23-year old Kenrick Ellis is a third round draft pick out of Hampton University in Virginia. He stands six feet, four inches tall and weights 346 pounds.
Drafting Ellis was a risky proposition for the Jets. Rex Ryan seems to like taking "problem children" under his wing. Whether or not Kenrick Ellis has a future in the NFL depends on the outcome of his trial in February.
