Best 2011 NFL Placekickers as of Week 6: Fan Take
When Billy Cundiff(notes) booted five field goals Oct. 16, he lifted the Baltimore Ravens to a 29-14 victory over the Houston Texans. With so much attention being paid to quarterbacks such as Tom Brady(notes) and Aaron Rodgers(notes) with their ungodly passing yardages, placekickers seem to be getting left out of the discussion in the 2011 season.
Here's a look at the best kickers in the NFL so far this season after Week 6 .
Dan Bailey of the Dallas Cowboys has been near-perfect in 2011. He's only missed one kick and is perfect from 40-49 yards. He's 15-for-16 and is a bright spot on the Cowboys roster despite disappointments. Had Bailey not hit six field goals Oct. 10 against the Washington Redskins, Dallas would have just one victory so far.
The Oakland Raiders have been relying on Sebastian Janikowski's leg since 2000. In 2011, he is in top form after missing just one out of 12 field goals all season long. There are two stats that stand out. Janikowski is 5-for-6 from 50 yards or greater. He tied an NFL record with a 63-yard strike against the Denver Broncos Sept. 12.
Cundiff is a great kicker when he's under 50 yards. He's 0-for-2 behind the 40 yard line this year. Yet his five field goal performance against the Texans boosted Cundiff's stock by giving him 14 makes on the year, second-most in the league. When Joe Flacco(notes) couldn't get anywhere in the passing game, Cundiff's boot made up for it.
Robbie Gould of the Chicago Bears is the highest-rated kicker in terms of percentage. Gould is 13-for-13 with five makes over 40 yards. The Bears have needed some of those field goals in a pinch. They are 3-3 on the year and are trying to keep pace with the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers.
Speaking of Green Bay, Mason Crosby is perfect on the year with a 10-for-10 mark. The Packers are undefeated thanks to Rodgers and a stingy defense. Crosby's leg hasn't really been needed in many games because only one game out of six has been decided by seven or fewer points. It's still nice to know that the Packers have a reliable kicker should a game get too close for comfort.
William Browning is a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs after latching on to the team during the lean years of St. Louis football. Born in the gateway city, he is also a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. He currently resides in Branson, Mo.
